Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Post by Chloe_88 »

I know I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Do you? Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Symptoms, Behavior, and Treatment

My obsessions are:

- Do not push buttons in public places ( elevator buttons, pedestrian push button etc)

- Do not touch railings, door handles in public places etc.

- Do not like to use keyboard at work before whiping it down with dis. infect. wipes.

- Do NOT do late. (never late for work etc.)

- Routine.

- Organising certain things and yet again not knowing in wich way (books for instance, do you organise these by hight, author, subject, colour or by alfabetizing them).

- Disinfectant spray. Having disinfectant spray for everything in the house.

last point would be, if someone (especially stranger or someone I don't like) touches me it can feel like their hand or finger is burning in my skin for hours, sometimes days. Same thing with someting dirty (picking up after dog or whatever)

Although I have quite a list, I don't find it annoying in daily life. Some would. I am not a very super tidy person but I have (quite bad) obsessions with certains things.

Do you have O.C.D. (or someone you know) and is it livable having it? I think so.

Adding to that:

I check temperatures and load lines of fridges in supermarkets etc. + Do not eat certain foods if I'm not sure if it has been stored properly.

I dont see it as a disorder. Others do.

Just thought of another one: some of my food cannot touch each other. Like rice and curry, I have it seperate. If it's mixed I don't eat it.

Because that's what I have. I know it, others do (+ specialists). Not saying thats WHO I am. I just have it. My question was; do you think it's a livable (so called) "disorder"?

You also "have" all the features that categorize you as "human" and my guess is that that is what you'd say you are. I don't understand what you mean by "I have it". Where did you get "it" and why? Is everyone capable of getting it?

Thats my point, I think it's just being "human", although some think not. Is everyone capable of getting "it"? Maybe... I don't know. Is it congenital or cognitive? I'm not sure..

I don't have OCD and I'm not aware of knowing anyone who does but maybe I do know them and just don't recognize it as such. At what point does a personality quirk become a disorder? The degree of it? When it affects the quality of someone's life?

You may be compulsive and may tend to obsess about certain things, but that does not make you disordered. It may be that your tendencies make life as we've fashioned it a bit more tedious for you to navigate, but again, that hardly makes you disordered. I have a real difficulty with just about any variation of the "disorder" word as we apply it to the human condition. Humans like to wear labels and psychologists and psychiatrists like applying them. I'm glad you realize the difference, not many who've been labeled do.

People are very easy in stamping something with a so called disorder these days. But when does is affect someone's quality of life? Or is it, affecting someone elses life?

Yes I have extreem routine (maybe, according to others that is). This is my morning routine before going to work,

06.05: alarm goes, go down staires, smoke ciggie.

06.15: get clean clothes, take shower, get dressed.

06.30: Pop toast in toater, whilst drying hair.

06.35; eat toast,

06.45: news starts, have another ciggie.

06.55: Make my lunch for the day + get teabags ready (drink own tea at work, dont like the tea there).

07.05: Check content of bag. (have lunch in bag? teabags? pass to get into work, ciggies etc.)

07.10: have one more ciggie + use toilet before I leave.

07.20: Check bag again, and cycle to work.

I don't have a problem with morning routine I love it, but others say it's obsessive. But I don't see this affecting anybody elses life? So yeah, why should this be stamped as a "disorder"?

I suppose "quirk" is slightly better. I'd argue that these quirks helped get our species to where we find ourselves, which has made these, whatever we label them, at least to this point, enormous assets.

Humans have a need to categorize, that in itself is an obsessive compulsion. Some of us are more or less extreme about it, that's all there is to this. Variation within any species is how Natural Selection works. A wide range of variation increases the chances of species survival.

For me, money MUST face the same direction and be smallest bill to largest.

When I was working, we didn't use pennies. If someone did a payout with pennies in it, or rang something up wrong, it'd make me crazy until I fixed it.

Life without Clorox cleanup would be my definition of a nightmare.

Dirty laundry or dishes make me crazy.

Here only only a few of mine:

Before I go to bed I check to see if I have locked up even though I know I have.

Paintings on the walls of my place cannot be crooked. I am continually straightening them.

Everything on my desk has it's place.

I canot touch a bar of soap with my bare hands if it has been standing a while and is like "tacky."

I'd just like to inform every compulsive disorder these few personal handy hints.

1. I don't always wash my hands after going to the toilet.........I havent caused any deaths nor have I caused my own .

2. I leave meat out on the bench ....and yet I've not poisoned anyone In the 26 years I've been cooking.

3. I very rarely wipe down benches in the bathroom kitchen toilet or any other eating area or place of hygeine with desinfectant . I can assure you hot water does the trick .

4. I very rarely check to see if I've locked anything ............... if someone wants my stuff enough they'll take it. but at least I won't have any broken windows.

5. I ate mud pies as a child ..............yes I ate them and they (thinking back) were delicious.....especially the ones with the grass bits and flowers in them .

Hope this helps

I'm 42 rarely get sick and neither do my children. Relax.

That's not a disorder . that's only a disorder if you change something and fear some harm will come to you for doing so . Otherwise I don't see a problem .........make me some toast too .

Must say I don't do bars of soap. They creep me out! haha! I like to use the soap dispenser thingies in the house. I would like the ones you don't touch at all, just stick your hands underneath and soap comes out!

mmmm... maybe I am a little weird and obsessive :yh_rotfl

I've always thought obsessive compulsive disorder was a bit of a negative misnomer...

How about Ontological Constructivist Development?...

We can even keep the abbreviation!!!!!!!!

Hello Chloe. ;)

When I had a job where I absolutely could not be late I had a routine as rigid as yours. I found it helpful in arriving at work fresh and unstressed and ready for the day. I think a lot of people do the same.

OCD is in many ways just a useful habit taken to extremes of behaviour. I think you'd probably tick enough boxes for a psychologist to label you OCD, but it seems moderate. The skin burning bit seems unusual to me in how extreme the reaction is, but again, it is something most of us have felt, just not to that extent.

You seem happy with your life, and that's the important thing.

Thats why I do it. I like getting to work in my own time, getting a cup of tea look through my email etc. instead of rushing!

Most people at work dont really notice (except for me being very early at work :wah:), untill I tell them certain things because something came up. For example i dropped a ciggie outside in the smoking area a while back, picked it up and threw it in the bin (because it had been on the floor i would not smoke it). Thats when someone started asking.

But yeah I'm happy with my life and as far as i know my ways of doing things doesn't effect others. So they can't complain. :wah:

I'm OC to a certain extent myself. I am also extremely organized, I like all my surroundings clean, although I don't take it to the extreme of not touching doorknobs, I do disinfect my own classroom everyday. (Out of need for survival...children are ALWAYS sick!)

I like straight lines of books, desks, color coded folders, and a neat garage and workbench. Actually, I've found that a little OCD is a good thing. You don't forget appointments, lose items, fail to complete assignments, pay bills, or unnecessarily wear stuff out.

(I just call it 'overachieving" :) )
