Dennis Ritchie - RIP

Post by Bryn Mawr »

A giant of the computer era died last week and the world was too busy mourning the loss of Steve Jobs to notice.

As it was in death it had pretty much been in life but Dennis Ritchie was truly one of the computing greats.

Unix was his baby, he and Ken Thompson invented and developed it.

C was invented by Ritchie and Kernighan to make it work more efficiently and led directly to the C++ and Java language set used today.

He was one of the founding fathers of the internet.

The world of computing grieves his loss.

It's odd being famous for designing a language when he designed it just to be able to rewrite an operating system neatly. C's a by-product and it turned out to be even more influential than the Unix it was designed to write. C exposed fundamental areas, Unix was just one way out of thousands.

I liked the quote attributed to him :-

"C is quirky, flawed, and an enormous success."
