We use different terminology but this would be called something long-winded like second-degree unpremeditated killing without exacerbatory considerations such as alcohol or weaponry.
I don't mind at all what sentence is applied but I'd want exactly the same sentence given to every other defendant found guilty under the same crime category, I feel the judicial system shouldn't have discretionary sentence terms and I'd eliminate the parole system entirely too. No part of the criminal law system should have a right of forgiveness - by all means hand that to the relatives of the victim if you want to incorporate it, but take it away from representatives of the investigation and judicial and penal systems.
From what I've seen of it, criminal investigation is weighted toward black-dominated crime categories and away from white-dominated crime categories and the nature of the investigations weights black-dominated categories even further; sentencing is discriminatory, parole is discriminatory: the entire system should have its inherent ability to discriminate removed to a far greater extent.
What sentence should all second-degree unpremeditated killers without exacerbatory considerations like alcohol or weaponry get? Community service or fined half their capital or forty years hard labor, I don't care just so long as everyone serves the same.

It's scarcely credible. "The Capitola City Council dedicated Thursday's meeting to Maryann Slettehaugh" - and then proposed the construction of a Skateboard Park. Maybe they'll add to their insensitivity by naming the main jump the Slettehaugh Memorial Ramp?

If a community refuses to apply the law as it stands that's sheer prejudice in action.

Have you kept your eye on stories relating to Raymond Hérissé? Not easy, is it. Not many stories. I'd be sad to see him disappear from discussion though.
You still maintain he was armed, do you, when he was executed?
In Miami, 12 officers shoot Haitian man over 100 times | San Francisco Bay View keeps the flame burning, small glimmer though it is. We could give him his own thread if you think that's helpful.
And here's an alternative relevant quote:People of color are disproportionately impacted by police brutality due to the built-in racism that runs through the very fiber of the so-called criminal justice system. While statistics for 2011 are still hard to come by, the nature of the police force as an armed wing of the ruling class indicates that these numbers are unlikely to decline significantly this year.
As for the rather better protected and very much Whiter skateboarder, Santa Cruz District Attorney's Office is still waiting on reports before deciding how to proceed, apparently. Or for all the attention to evaporate so they can drop the matter entirely.

I still see a lot of opinion.
I am not denying that when you put 40 men in one place and give them guns, it can get messy.
And when they all have badges, it can get even worse.
I don't believe the kid had a hundred bullets in him. Most cops can't hit the broadside of a barn when they get excited.
I am not denying there is racism in America, either, but you should probably tend to your own country before pointing fingers at mine.

Any civilized society would have held an official public inquiry and published the exact count fired, the location of the shooters and injured and a hundred pages on "the events leading up to" quoting eye-witnesses.
Any civilized society would have held an inquest at which the autopsy count of rounds in the corpse would have been published together with a sketch of their location and a hundred pages on how to prevent that sort of mayhem another time.
Any civilized society would be planning a trial of the officers for yet another witless killing of someone they should have, at most, taken into custody.
Miami appears to be lawless. Heavily policed, admittedly, but without the rule of law. It sounds more like Bogota or Dodge City in the nineteenth century than anywhere I'd want to live or visit.

Firstly, you keep saying Miami.
This was in Miami Beach. Much different place. (Not to say that Miami is without it's legal adventures.)
Many of the cops were off-duty officers from a number of towns and the local Counties.
As for inquiry, there is one going on.
There are so many problems with this thing, you cannot even imagine. Communications between officers was "less than optimal."
Most of the officers appeared to have no idea what was going on. Only that this car had run a checkpoint, and that there had been shooting.
So, being big brave men with big guns, they joined in.
Not terribly professional. That is one of the problems we see with armed cops, sometimes. Group hysteria sets in and they little brains shut down, and they react the way too many men do when the shooting starts. They start shooting.
Also, Each department will have to investigate their own officers that discharged his weapon on an individual case. This is independent of the event inquiry.
Don't think that all this is being swept under the Rug.

Oh, no. The Cuban crooks make up only about 30% of the Crook population of Miami.
And not all the Marielitos were crooks, and many of them settled in other parts of the States.
Miami can be a great place to visit. Like most cities in the world, though, there are neighborhoods you would not want to explore.

I didn't think the schmaltz would get more repellent. I was wrong.
Attorney Laura Walther, who was hired by the family to help with the ensuing medical bills, wanted to do something more for George Slettehaugh. The Santa Cruz attorney was able to take care of the financial component, but she was looking for something with more of what she calls "a human element."
She thought of how he'd told how much he missed his wife's cooking and it gave her an idea of what she could do to help. Walther contacted Gayle Ortiz of Gayle's Bakery and Rosticceria, who has donated and helped dozens of community organizations since it first opened in 1978. Ortiz was happy to help, she said, and agreed to donate weekly meals to Slettehaugh.
Walther decided to reach out to the skateboarder to get him involved in delivering the meals. The boy, who was deeply affected by the accident, was happy to help, she said.

Looked down on? In England what's looked down on is a lower class and for the last century at least, Americans have been accepted here as classless. The aristocracy has married Americans on the basis that they weren't of a lower class, where they'd never have gone near an equivalent English woman. Wallace Simpson married the King, for goodness' sake.
They may, for some reason, have felt it but I've never seen it happen in any part of the country.
Here - this is class in England...

Perhaps "looked down on" was a poor choice of words. Both daughter and son thought there was an air of disrespect or arrogance toward them due to their Americanism, I suppose similar to accusations made here on FG. I personally understand the differences are mainly cultural and my kids may have been feeling sensitive at the time. English people have always been portrayed as a bit snooty by our media and movie makers and that no doubt played a part of the perceptions (as they apparently do on FG).
Anyway, I know you all are just people puffing your chest out and keeping your chin high like the rest of the human race. No biggie, really.

I have, I'm sorry to say. It's not common, but I have seen it. There are some people here who resent the USA taking over as Top Nation and they are generally snobbish Daily Mail reading types who specialise in being rude and patronising. The far left aren't too keen on the USA either. An unusual grouping, but there you are.
