Does anyone here have experience of fighting local authorities ?

Post by Oscar Namechange »

As I am relatively new to my new position In the community, I would very much appreciate Input from anyone who has taken on local authorities In relation to hair-brained schemes proposed by local councils etc.

Did you find them obstructive, belligerent and have an over-all attitude of disregarding local feelings?

Have you ever taken on local authorities and won?

I would really value all Input,

Thanks

Crooked lying devious bastards, try using the planning laws against them. If they are ignoring them or bullying officials in top ignoring them you mighty have a chance.

I have on several occasions tried to get the local council to do or change things. The individuals I've contacted have invariably been as polite and informative as I could have wished for. I have never once succeeded in getting any of my proposed actions implemented, modest and useful though they were.

Actually I just finished a fight against a rezoning of our neighborhood from single family to multiple family (Apartments.) the key is to organize your neighbors, then show up to every meeting. We went to the newspaper, the planning and zoning commission (where we beat down the developer!) and finally the city council meeting. We got over 390 signatures for our petition, put togehter powerpoint presentations and got everyone and their families to be present at meetings.

That's how you get things done. There's strength in numbers.

gmc.... could not agree more. !!!

Spot, as It happens, I would value your opinion on this and this Is a brief run-down of what the problem Is and any suggestions and help you could give me will e benficial I am sure.

In a very small Cul-De-Sac there are just 20 houses. At the end of the CDS Is a school who's 14ft Iron gates remain locked creating a dead end.

The school was originally a Primary school but In recent years has diversified Into a Community School and sub lettings In the evenings meaning residents are obstructed 12 hours a day.

When the school was a primary school, residents knew that 9 am and 3 pm would be a problem but worked with It.

Residents were not consulted as the school diversified and pupil Intake Increased every year.

Some residents now find they have been blocked In and out of their homes for anything up to an hour by parent parking.

At the entrance of the CDS is a sign saying 'Parents, no vehicle access to school'. This can not be enforced because It is a public road.

There Is a designated car park for parents at the other side of the school but this means In winter, parents once parked up, have to walk the child some distance down a path In bad weather.

Initially, we were lied to by the council over this September pupil Increases and we were told 30 new pupils. I have since found out It Is 120 over the next two years.

The council at a residents meeting basically told us, tough, it is going ahead.

All parties came out In fierce opposition of this and I gave the planning dept photographic evidence of total gridlock and chaos In the CDS at different times of the day.

Great Western Ambulance legal dept consider the homes In the CDS at high risk of emergency services not being able to reach them.

There Is another entrance/exit to the school In another road and the residents want this opened up as a through system so that the cars who do come Into the CDS can at least get out again. the council so far will not consider this.

I was part of a site Inspection a month ago when objections to planning were asked to be put In by 25th were posted on the school gates. I was horrified to see they had already started building the foundations for the new class-rooms before planning was approved. My e mails asking who gave this permission have been Ignored.

Then the local Labour Councillor oppossed the planning because nothing has been done In the past to divert cars away from the CDS. He eventually withdrew his objection because It meant bussing the kids to Yate but he only withdrew on the strict understanding that measures would be put Into place to divert cars away before term started and he has assurences that they would.

The council appointed a committee just before he withdrew his opposition which Included myself and two other residents and we were told that the first committee meeting would take place to agree viable options before term started. Now he has withdrawn his opposition and It appears they have got their own way, they are trying to delay the first committee meeting until after school.

The council then put forward their proposals.

To rip up a green In the CDS and put In parking bays and put In waiting signs.

These proposals are nothing but low cost, wing and prayer measures they hope will help.

Parking bays mean cars reversing Into small children on foot and Incoming cars.

Waiting signs mean parents will be waiting In the middle of the road because It is already chaos In the CDS and who is going to enforce the waiting time? The Infrastructure of the roads around the school can not cope with any more cars and yet these council officials want to put Into place measures that will attract more parents cars Into the CDS.

I composed a questionaire for the residents and all 20 residents are opposed to the parking bays, yet, last week, there In the Bristol Evening Post Is an article stating that residents agreed to them. On talking at length to the reporter, he assured me that the Info had come from the council.

Oscar...you need media attention. This might be Machiavellian, but I'd wait for someone to get sick enough to call for an ambulance, then stage a media event where that person couldn't get to the ambulance or the ambulance couldn't get in. Lots of screaming, crying and hand wringing. Throw in some disparaging remarks about the council. Then send that video to the nightly news. They love that. then post it on Youtube.

In this day, that's the way to force the issue.

Saint, Thank You but I don't need media attention... I have It In triplicate :wah::wah:

This Issue has made the newspapers four times In just 8 weeks and I am on tenterhooks because I had a reporter round my house only yesterday. I am dreading what she Is going to write because as we say In England.. 'I went off on one' about the devious tactics of the local council.

I don't need to court the local media, they seem most compliant with my demands In all matters . :wah:

At the 11th hour, around 4.50 pm, an e mail came from the planning dept spokesperson telling me, basically , they had done a U turn.

They will not start digging roads up until residents from the committee have met with them and explored all viable options along with that first committee meeting being brought forward to before the children start back at school.

A small victory and testament to the power of the local media.

I did have a win recently though .......But only because i went ballistic and with my threatening of my solicitor and police.....apparently everyone responsible was unavailable and then I had receptionists running around trying to find metho or eucilyptus oil. My point being that I cannot move my car because you have just rendered it illegal to drive. "YOU MOVE IT!!! And I'll have a policeman standing there as you do !!! "

So anyway we now have three new student carparks at the school... :) lined and signed.

I sought of bow my head when I walk pass faculty now ...but us at the building and mechanics and metal depo are happy as pigs in mud :)

Good for you Mrs !!!

Funny enough, the one thing we seem to have them on Is the dreaded Human Rights Act.

I was researching local legislation and by accident found the article 'The right to peaceful enjoyment of your home'. That seemed to get their attention.

Being blocked In your home day and night Is not 'Peaceful enjoyment of your home' when they are aware of the chaos and gridlock that already exists yet seek to attract more cars Into a very small Close that is a dead end.
