Sounds like a News of the World Screamer doesn't it?

But it's true.

The Catholic Hierarchy regards preserving the public reputation of the Catholic Church as more important than a few kids having their lives wrecked by sexually abusive Catholic priests.

I'd like to emphasise that most Catholics, priests and laity alike, are fine people as well as my friends and neighbours. Some live lives of great holiness and are worthy of the greatest respect.

But the Catholic Hierarchy in general and the Vatican in particular has a dangerous arrogance.

Enda Kelly, the Tanaoiste (Leader of the Opposition), said the Cloyne Report, "exposes an attempt by the Holy See to frustrate an inquiry in a sovereign, democratic republic as little as three years ago."

"And in doing so, the Cloyne Report excavates the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism and the narcissism that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day." He added that as a practising Catholic himself, he had found it very hard to have to say such things.

You're wasting your time in some ways. Any criticism will be dismissed as anti-Catholicism meanwhile we have to put up with the godly deprecating the rise of secular values and demanding their right to discriminate and preach hatred against those those whose lifestyles they disapprove of and be given special recognition and the respect due to religious beliefs. Meanwhile everybody pays for their separate schools so they can preserve their unique outlook on life where they preach tolerance of lesser religions and deplore sectarian violence and no they are not perpetuating it at all how dare unbelievers suggest such a thing.

I think you might be wrong there. The explosion of anger in the Irish Parliament may well be a turning point in Irish toleration of religious authority, and not before time.The Taoiseach has launched an unprecedented attack on the Vatican, accusing Catholic hierarchy of putting the Church ahead of child rape victims. In a damning assessment of Rome’s attitude to paedophile priests, Mr Kenny claimed the latest inquiry into clerical abuse cover-ups has exposed a dysfunctional, elite hierarchy determined to frustrate investigations.

The Holy See was also warned that religion does not rule Ireland.

Most of the irish i have met have been fairly secular in their views, even the religious ones were highly critical- I think when the church tries to tighten it's grip that's when it starts losing it's adherents you might stuilo believe in god but you don't need to follow a religion to do that.

There is at least the beginning of a response from Rome to the report, with the Nuncio returning from Dublin to give a sense of the current mood. Who knows, it might be a positive step.

The comment that jumped out at me in the Vatican's announcement of the recall was :-

"Nor does it exclude some degree of surprise and disappointment at certain excessive reactions."

They have recalled their envoy because they are disappointed at the Irish government's "excessive" reaction! How can they say the words

Well, they have certainly backed up Mr Kenny's points about "the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism and the narcissism that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day."

(I am, btw, now completely confused as to Mr Kenny's position in the Irish political system. I know he's not President, but that's about it.)

My understanding is that he holds a post equivalent to Prime Minister. He and his forebears are referred to as the Tea Shock while in office.

Now now spot that;'s cultural snobbery aimed at the gaelic language. You wouldn't make fun of the welsh now would you.

It's not snobbery in the slightest - a phonetic spelling is a lot more use than writing it in the local language if I'm writing in English. Would you have me write Firenze or Warsawa? From memory they use the word Taoiseach, I can guarantee I spelled it wrong and it's still pronounced Tea Shock, something you'd never guess unless you either heard it or knew Gaelic.

I've seen Mr Kelly referred to as Tanaoiste, Taoiseach, and Prime Minister...

Anyway, he's doing a good job with this issue, whatever his official position.

I was being ever so slightly facetious, foolishly I thought you being from the same side of the pond would understand that.
