Spot's Stetson

Post by spot »

Not that spot actually has a Stetson yet.

I'm considering headgear. Over the years I've had an assortment of hats, I like hats, I particularly feel the need for a hat.

I only have two hats at the moment and neither are wearable.

One is a tuque. The weather is inappropriate for the tuque. There may be two weeks each year in this country when a tuque is feasible.

The other is a... I'm not sure what it would be called. It's one of those hats that street kids wear with the peak at the back and it might be associated in some way with baseball. Mine is black and has the acronym "NASA" written on it over the peak. My daughter will slay me if I ever put it on again, she's too embarrassed to stay in the same county if I put it on.

I may, possibly, get myself a Stetson. In black. Unless anyone here has a reasonable veto, or a better suggestion.

The floor is open to anyone, appalled or otherwise.

A cloth cap. A deerstalker would be pretentious, unless you are a gamekeeper but a cloth cap would probably suit yur curmudgeonly image besides being eminently practical. Myself I favour a goretex cap or I often wear a trekmates porelle/fleece lined cap with a very broad brim that serves the eminenly p[ractical function of keeping the rain out my eyes. However I have my eye on a tweed cap by way of a fashion statement, blue I thin k to match my eyes. I adopt Bruce lee's famous advice when it comes to fashion. My style is no style at all.

Rather than a stetson why not one of those leather australian hats that seem so popular?

I did wear one of those leather Australian hats for several years with my full length Drover's coat, until they became so popular. Maybe they'll go out of fashion and I'll use them again but I have no wish to be mistaken for a stock trader. I bought them in Edinburgh an amazing number of decades ago. They have P G Field embossed inside and the lower back concertinas in case I ever find myself on a horse.

I think I chose a hat manufactured by the John B. Stetson Company for reasons primarily associated with style, panache, literary connotations, historical references and plain old-fashioned dudeness. Nobody is more suited to a hat manufactured by the John B. Stetson Company than myself, not since Larry Hagman went to his reward. Okay, there are two of us still in the running but I'll still be here when he's gone.

I had in mind, I think, something more like George Armstrong Custer would have worn in the days preceding the Battle of the Little Bighorn and try as I might I can't picture him in the one you've found. George Armstrong Custer and I have a lot in common but not, as yet, a hat style.

The answer, with most people who insist on wearing a hat, is a toupee but I'm not convinced that that is appropriate in this instance.

I've often wondered whether an ancestor of mine ever visited the USA in the years after it became independent, perhaps in 1812. The photograph you produced there could easily be assumed my twin if you dressed him in less dissolute garb.

That's the absolute inverse of the colour I'd choose, Odie.

I've reversed the colours of your image and this is a lot more like it. It has to be felt, too, not straw. Fur-felt for preference.

I might well, as you suggest, bend the brim and even toy with a Montana Peak.

It's called an Akubra, is it? I've worn one of those for twelve years or so but I never knew a name for it. How come yours doesn't have wine corks round the edge?

I'm sorry but the only possible hat for a Spot is a Burger King crown! No other head wear can possibly suit that auspicious head so well. :)

Well, if you'd prefer...

They're generally only worn where the fly population outweigh the amount of energy required to brush them from one's face.

The corks would be, in my case, mere affectation. You're quite right, I have no need of them. The Akubra is, though, exactly right for me, I shall abandon my move toward high-dome excess and stick with what I already know and appreciate.

You merely need look at the two photos Wisey posted, concentrating on the rims and sides, to see how unlikely either of them would be to disappoint by going floppy while in use.

I think the Akubra would be quite becoming, it certainly has that rakish sort of appeal over here.

We'll need a "Spot's boots" thread soon, might as well do the complete makeover! :wah:

If you're looking to stylize the Sir Spot look...When your brother is in a less mocking sort of mood, I'd suggest taking him with you on an all around image makeover. He has a subtle, yet sophisticated style that you could trust. Assuming he doesn't have any residual vendettas against you I'm not aware of.
