My Dad taught me how to drive when I was 13-1/2 years old. Cause I bugged him continuously, even though I could not get my "jr" driver's license until age 16.
Needless to say at 16 I passed my drivers test easily the very first time! Since then, I have driven over 1-1/2 million miles! (Not on the same car -Ha Ha)
I taught both of my Daughters how to drive when they were 16, and they both passed test the first time! They are great drivers, driving over 19 years.

being a farm boy I also was drivng early.
Went to get my licence when I turned 16. But in Colo you have to have a learner's permit for the first 6 months so I couldn't get my licence for another 6 months.
My dad had an agreement with the cops. They would let him dive up to the town limits but he was not permitted to drive in the town.
And of course there was the tractor loop hole in that tractors don't require a licence to opperate.
One guy who lost his licence for drinking and driving would drive a loader around the town.

Being a "farm girl" I was taught at about age 8... mainly 'cause Daddy
needed somebody to drive the pickup while he shoveled whatever off
the back!
He taught me and I am glad but boy, he was a rough teacher. "How many
times I gotta tell ya to let that clutch out SLOW?" then... wham. Or, he
was very fond of saying "Oh look at the cute little baby colt" (I loved
horses) and if I looked... wham.
I learned to drive all kinds of equipment, including "Cletrac" tractors,
with no tires just tracks, and something called a TD9, which was a
small (relatively speaking!) Caterpillar tractor. Very embarassing when
boyfriends would come over... "Where's Val?" "Oh, that's her out there
on the TRACTOR".
As for miles driven, gosh, I dunno it'd be hard to estimate. But at 44
total years of driving, it's gotta be way up there!

I grew up with a divorced mom that didn't have a car and didn't drive. As a teenager it always bugged me that all my friends knew how to drive, but not me. I just couldn't get anyone to teach me. I finally taught myself at age 19 by taking a military jeep (in low gear) out onto an unused runway and practiced shifting, backing up etc. I then borrowed a truck and did the same thing.

Wow you "farm" folks really start driving young! And doing a little bit of everything seems is the way on a farm. It prepares you early in life for handling the many every day chores of grown up life. Cool!

My friend Kenny taught me how to drive. Round and round the pumps of a gas station he worked in on Long Island. My dad drove for a living. He would yell at me.. GET THE FEEL OF THE WHEEL, FOR GODS SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!
LISTEN TO THE HUM OF THE ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say I had to give him up as a teacher.
Ive driven all over the United States. Got my motorcycle liscence when I was 23
Eventually went to work for Suzuki as an instructor. Lots of fun.
That was all a very long time ago.
Somedays now..... I dont feel like getting into the car to go to the store.
Would rather do other things.........Cute topic cars.
PS..when my son Brian was 6 his summer camp group performed BABY YOU CAN
DRIVE MY CAR> Hes 20 now, it was so cute..........Thats what I think of when I hear car....... Corny Huh?

Growing up in the Midwest, I learned to drive rather early. I was driving tractors by 10 or 11, driving the farm truck around at 14 (three cheers for farm permits!).
By the time I got my learner's permit at 15.5, I had readily learned how to drive in ice and snow. My family lived several miles off the blacktop down a snaky dirt road. Everytime we had bad weather and needed to go somewhere, my parents had me drive up to the blacktop. In this manner, I learned how to drive in any kind of bad weather - something I am very grateful to my parents for.
