New Zealand earthquake

Post by spot »

"A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off New Zealand's South Island, the US Geological Survey has said. The epicentre was 30km (20 miles) north-west of Christchurch, at a depth of 16.1 km (10 miles), it added. There have so far been no reports of any damage or casualties." - BBC News - Strong earthquake rocks New Zealand's South Island

That's a big shake so close to such a big city. It's a rough way to get woken at half past four in the morning, too.

Hmmm So we're getting a 4.3 metre swell this weekend . I wouldn't worry about the earthquake I'd be worried about the Tsunami heading in our direction and their coast. I hope not. Bit worried about hte strength of those aftershocks though

Argh. Silly me. 0 KM below ground. Not metres. But still - I had the impression all earthquakes happened many km underground. Clearly not, according to this table.

New Zealand has them all the time as well as Indonesia and if you look at the geography /topography it's understandable.

Exellent. Now all they ahve to do is find enough coucil workers to dig holes and lean on shovels and they'll have their sewage and waters lines all good again

Saw a news report today on TV about the quake and the affect on Christchurch, South Island. The Prime Minister said it was amazing that nobody has been killed, although there have been some bad injuries. There was footage of badly damaged buildings and severely cracked roads, so I'm not surprised that water and sewage pipes have been fractured. It is to be hoped that repairs to at least the pipes can been carried out asap. Good to hear your rellies are OK, Lon - best wishes to them from the UK ! :-6

There's been a major earthquake in New Zealand's city of Christchurch on Tuesday at 1 P.M. local time in NZ.

I believe this is where Lon's relatives live. They suffered another earthquake there in September.

I hope all the people in Christchurch are ok, especially Lon's relatives. All of my best wishes are with them tonight.

It just went off again, with less energy but a lot more damage. This time it's killed people, Christchurch sounds like a war zone.

Just talked to my wife who is in Christchurch at the moment. She is OK and is at one of the hospitals helping with some of the injured. Once a nurse always a nurse. I have talked to other friends in Christchurch via Skype and the area in which my wife and I had a home two years ago has sustained heavy damage. My wife will be back in California on March 8th. Even thought this quake was less in magnitude than the last one, it seems to have been more deadly.

Of all the places one would wish might avoid this sort of problem, New Zealand tops the list for me - I've always thought of the country as a small outpost of heaven. Along with Australia, fuzz, I'm not unaware of what happened there earlier. But whoever's responsible for shifting emergency responses into earthquaked places, get moving sooner rather than later please.

Many people feel that way about California Spot. On the other hand, look at the rotten weather that the mid west and east coast of the U.S. is getting right now. Give me a gentle 5.5 quake any time and keep that 12 feet of snow and ice. Ugh!!
