As a way to cut costs I think this will continue to happen not only in different states but eventually even in Medicare Programs. They will look at anticipated life expectancy for various organ transplants and decide on a cost/benefit basis. I wouldn't want to be the one making that kind of decision.

Weren't you a doctor? In these situations a doctors shoes is the second to last place I'd want to be. It's something that needs to be done though. What is repulsive and should be stopped is how so and so came to the point they're at. No good liver should go to an alcoholic even if they have the money. This guy had Hep-C, you can get it from dirty needles. If that's the case then tough. Same for Micky Mantel.
There are things we have to do to balance this situation. We need to stand up and figure out what is worth it and what is not. I read something about a treatment for advanced prostate cancer. 100k for a regimen that only extends life for 4 months. A no go for me.

No, I never was a doctor. There is a photo of me on FG that was taken at a New Year's Eve Party in New Zealand where I was dressed as a surgeon.
Speaking of Prostate surgery--------there is a story in NewsWeek mag about a Robotic Machine (costing one million plus) that is now doing over 55% of the Prostate Cancer surgeries. The machine of course is aided by the skilled hands of a surgeon. After each surgery the machine requires $1,500 of parts replacement. The procedure while making it easier for the surgeon does not provide any better results than the old doctor only surgical procedure (which I had over 20 years ago). I don't think I have to mention the huge difference in cost between the two procedures. Any wonder that the cost of health care is high------and going higher.

I agree unless that liver couldn't be used on someone else. Just throwing it away when it could do some good would be wrong.
