how many languages do you speak?

Post by lady cop »

i have no talent for languages. i know a small smattering of french and latin. Bothwell has a genius for not only languages, but regional dialects/accents. my italian grandmother spoke 7 languages fluently, was a WWII interpreter for the US. i didn't get that gene. what languages have you mastered? ....and if you answer this post in a language i cannot read i am going to sentence you to reading every post of "Bothwell's Pub".:wah:

Well - I speak English. I know a few words of Spanish - enough to know when I am being called a bit*ch as a sub and most of the curse words in French and German. My mind doesn't work that way either - my affinity is for math, science and music.

I know lots of Italians and Sicilians they are all charming, but just ask their wives and they will say different. Everyone said my dad was charming and the most polite man they had met, but he was a b.....d at home.

No offence here LC your dad is not included.

I take back everything I said about Italians. Your right LC I am just stereotyping. It's when I think of my dad I tend blame the nation for way he was. SORRY.

he may have been the exception, but my Dad was devoted and faithful to my Mom until his dying day. he sacrificed everything he ever had for his Mom, his brothers, and his children. and then he bought up a whole street in Mass. and built houses on it...where he quietly made sure every family in those houses had food and shoes on their kids' feet. i still get letters that the road is not the same without him. not to mention he was a genius and MIT professor as well as director of naval research. this man was born and raised in a tiny village in italy near lake como. he was also very emotional but rarely showed it. i'm like that too.

I speak Spanish and English fluently and I studied Hebrew but I can't speak it and I can only read some of it and usually only what comes out of the Torah.

If you mean knowing and understanding word of a given language, I know 7. If you mean fluent, none.

I know great Spanish, with that western Spanglish dialect thrown in, and read alot of ancient languages. If I could learn another language, it would be Navajo and Cherokee.

Every native language is different. Cherokee uses a syllabary, based on their phonetics. Other native languages use English letters to approximate sounds, diacritical marks and accents. Below is the Cherokee syllabary.

Some are similar, but most have definite differences-just like the difference between Spanish, Italian and French. Similar language family, but distinct languages.

Down there in Florida, even the Seminole speak two distinct languages: Creek and Miccosukee-languages related to each, but distinct enough that speakers cannot understand each other.

I speak a bit of valley-girl English, and I'm not too bad at Spanish, although my listening comprehension is much better than my speaking or writing since I mostly used my skills when working at the mall and I was trying to determine whether or not someone was lying to me.

I took several intensive years of French and I tried to push it out of my mind, but I can still actually read on an elementary level and occasionally I dream in gramatically perfect French, although ask me while I'm awake and aware of what's going on and I'd draw a total blank.

I think reading a language is always a lot easier than trying to speak it. Especially when you have an Ohio non-accent and people laugh at it :-1

Well I've only ever studied French and German at school, and can't say that I'm really any good. I would love to study Japanese though as I have always wanted to visit there. Though I agree with Ac, I know that's it one heck of a hard and awkward language to try and learn.

Japanese would be cool, so would Korean-since I have a brother and sister who are Korean. I remember all the kids words I learned, but not enough for an intelligent conversation. Always impresses a new Korean student when I say something simple, then that's it, I can't really say much more!:wah:
