BBC News - Film star Tony Curtis dies at 85

Hmm.

I'm trying to think of something kind to say about the chap's acting ability.

Nothing springs to mind.

Nothing springs to mind. His latter day films were rather tedious one must agree however, In 'Some like It Hot' with Jack Lemon, he was absolutely brilliant'

He was also devishly handsome and a true gentlman.

Not one of the great character actors but made a decent fist of the Boston Strangler and was good in Some Like it Hot. He was likable without having the acting talent of some of his contemporaries

Mmmm ! Was he that bad ? Roger Moores eyebrows deserved at least an Oscar Nomination. I'd suggest Tony curtis got a little deeper, for example the Boston Strangler

Tony was a good looking dude but that New York Bronx accent was just too much when he starred in some early Ali Babba type films. His acting skills were a bit better when the role he was playing fit the accent.

I was probably put off at an early age when I saw Taras Bulba. A slightly non-PC film, with lines like "Put your faith in your sword and your sword in a Pole". Hard to get away with even then, you'd think.

Been said already, but Some Like it Hot is enough imo.

I'm not subtle on films. Big bangs and primary colours please. So loving Some Like it Hot is one heck of an endorsement from this cultural desert. :)

Operation Petticoat.

Some Like it Hot.

Suppose they gave a war and nobody came

But he wanted to be a serious actor. Unfortunately he was a tad pedestrian at serious.

He shoulda stuck with Comedy.

What I invariably saw was Tony Curtis playing a part, I don't think I ever saw a credible character being created onscreen. Even if you take something as big as Spartacus - where nobody could say the director wasn't short of ambition or ability - you don't see Olivier or Laughton or Ustinov, you see Crassus, Gracchus and Batiatus. And, stood like a rabbit lit by headlamps, Tony Curtis on camera suddenly realizing how scary good acting can be, frankly he looked terrified. Admittedly, given that his character's about to be sodomized off-screen by a virile hedonist in uniform, it's not an unreasonable attitude to portray, but that's not what comes across.

I've been reading Kirk Douglas's book, "The Ragmans Son" and Tony Curtis is mentioned a few times because he was in "The Vikings" and "Spartacus" with him. Kirk seemed to have liked him as a person. Tony was indeed a beautiful young man and shined in drag in "Some Like it Hot". His marriage to Janet Leigh was a happy one...for awhile.

"Curtis was buried with a range of his favourite possessions, AP reports, including an iPhone, copy of his favourite novel, Anthony Adverse, a Stetson hat, an Armani scarf and a pair of driving gloves."

Pharaonic excess, I'd call that.

How long does an iPhone run on standby?

Any bets there will be someone claiming to have talked to him via the iphone? Wasn't Curtis also in the movie Trapeze?
