China cuts off Japan.

Post by Scrat »

Seems China is starting to flex its muscles in its neighborhood. This is only to be expected, can China back it up though. I doubt they're willing to play chicken yet.

I guess the Okinawans gave the captain back and now there is more wranglng after the Chinese took 4 Japanese into custody. I really don't see how Japan can lay claim to these Islands or the area. They're almost 700 miles SW of the Japanese mainland and 146 miles east of China proper. The area is just off the north coast of Taiwan, 40 miles or so. Japan does have a rock in the area, Yonagunishima is the southern most rock of the Okinawa chain but that is 90 miles away.

So now begins the posturing and chest beating, this should be interesting to simply watch unfold. Maybe they'll even start chucking missiles at one another.

They don't need to do any chest beating, all they have to do is bide their time and watch america go bankrupt and cease to be the leading military power. Russia went bankrupt in afghanistan and the US and sadly us look headed the same way. Russia and india/pakistan are perhaps a bigger concern to them nowadays. If india and pakistan start fighting it could get very nasty very quickly and the war in Afghanistan is destabilising pakistan. I can't see japan and china starting to shoot at each other anytime soon.

It's not a trigger for fighting, it's a trigger for one-upmanship. It's reminiscent of the 2001 spyplane fiasco if you remember it - "Both President Bush and Secretary of State Powell have expressed their sincere regret over your missing pilot and aircraft. Please convey to the Chinese people and to the family of the pilot Wang Wei that we are very sorry for their loss". A little grovelling lasts for ever.

Dodko island is still under dispute between Japan and Korea. They like to hang onto these little rocks......

They're still trading verbal broadsides about this. I guess Japan wants compensation for the damage done to their corvette.

Chonsi, I really don't see how Japan can claim these islands, 2 of the 3 are in artillery range of the Taiwanese coast. They belong to Taiwan if anybody. It should be illegal for a situation like this to occur, it's like Canada owning Vashon Island here in Puget Sound.
