As soon as I realised that severe cuts would have to be made, to try to stabilise the crisis in the UK, I had a feeling that the unions would have something to say about any cuts to manpower, and it would not surprise me to hear that at some stage a National Strike may be called! Of course the unions will threaten strike action! What does the government think will happen? I have, personally, mixed feelings about this. There is also a great deal of ill-feeling about the MOD sneakily organising redundancies for our soldiers whilst they are still out there fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan ! Nasty? Of course it's nasty !
Perhaps they should start with putting a ban, right across the board, of ALL bonuses for a period of two years and then review it - what the heck do these over-paid 'fat cats' need with these enormous bonuses anyway? At the least it will show that the rich are being hit, not just the poorer people of the UK all the time! OK, it will only be a drop in the ocean, within the bigger picture, but it will be a start! I'm not sure how the government thinks that our economy will pick up, by cutting services, causing masses of unemployed that will have to be paid benefits from the National Purse! They will loose the benefit of people paying taxes, because they will not be earning, and they will gain a massive claim from the National Purse of people claiming unemployment benefit! There could well be civil disobedience, before this mess is sorted - we shall see.

Give that it was obvious that these cuts, or similar, were going to have to happen within the life of this parliament I'd imagine that Labour were not too unhappy at having lost the election - it was always going to be something of a poisoned chalice for the winner.
Gill, you need to be careful how you define a bonus before you cut all bonuses. It is not just fat cats and the rich who get them. Many ordinary workers have a variable portion to their pay that is dependent on how the company does and whether you call it profit sharing or whatever it is still a bonus. An across the board ban will hurt a lot of people and disincentivise the workforce, not the fat cats many of whom are paid far too much in basic salary in the first place.

Simple economics says that if you have more outgoings than incomings, something is bound to go. Yes being able to support the world is a nice dream, but not practical. When benefits are cut, you just watch the mass exodus then! Wonder if France or Germany has the benefit problem that Britain does?

Oh, it's the 'fat cats' I'm gunning for. Workers who justly receive a 'performance bonus', I believe does not cripple the economy, and as you say, is a great incentive for the workforce. It's the millions handed out 'as a matter of course' to the over-paid 'bosses' that I believe is causing much hard feelings amongst the ordinary workers, and should therefore be discontinued immediately.

There are 2 ways of looking at this... I myself believe that Gordon Brown did what he had to do during bail out or things would have been far far worse. At least the fiscal Injection albiet from borrowing was essential at the time to get the banks lending again.
Things are recovering but yes, It has left us with a debt.
But... as usual with any cuts It Is the middle England working man that is affected.
We need to get our priorities right. If the tax payer Is to suffer then we need to stop mass Immigration now. We also need to stop subsidising the EU and spending billions In relief to other countries.
If this Government had any back-bone, they would put our country men first.

A wonderful quote I came across recently :-
This parliament, in which shivers run vainly along the green benches looking for spines to run up ...
From the writings of George Galloway

From the writings of George Galloway Very true...
Having seen for myself some of the thug antics of the UAF of which Cameron supports and funds, I wonder If we will see the thug police out on the streets battering strikers Into submission again?
