My grandmother used to watch his TV show in the sixties. I thought he was a textbook example of squareness, but the old folks liked him, and I guess it soothed their nerves in the days of Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, etc.

He, like Karl Malden from a year or two ago, was one of those people that I just assumed was already dead.
