I'm what I consider a "Slow Speeder", as I usually only drive between 6 to 8 miles per hour faster (still wrong) than the posted speed limit, in the right lane. I am continually passed by by "Fast Speeders" that have to be going 20+ mlies per hour faster then the posted speed limit. So when I'm going 71 in a 65 zone, that means the others are going 91+? :driving:
SO ARE YOU A "SLOW" SPEEDER, or a "FAST SPEEDER? AND IF A FAST SPEEDER, DO YOU GET MANY SPEEDING TICKETS?

It seems to me, when driving on California freeways that if all the vehicles are moving along at the same speed, even if that same speed is 80 mph, no one is likely to get stopped. The person passing all those cars that are doing 80 mph is likely to stand out and therefore be ticketed.

I'd like to talk about how each state differs. I have extensive driving experience in the Western States. I have no knowledge east of Colorado that is current. Here's my list:
California: Keep up with traffic. Usually okay up to 10 - 15 mph over the speed limit in heavy "blend-in" traffic. Stay over in the right lanes so you won't be picked. Low traffic less congestion - safe at 5 mph over. Pushing it (get a ticket) at 10 mph over.
Oregon: Safe up to 5 mph over. Go 6 mph over - get ticket.
Washington: West side of state = California. East side of state = Oregon.
Idaho: Drive the speed limit. I know many people who were ticketed for 2 and 3 miles over. Idaho doesn't have a lot of laws. The ones they do have, they enforce!
Colorado: Colorado = California+. 75 mph speed limits - and 18 wheelers included. Feels like the wild west. Highway 25 is crazy with 60,000 lb. trucks running at 80 to 85 on each other's bumpers.
Utah: Utah = Oregon
Wyoming: Jury is out.
Montana: Keep it legal in town and around city areas. Generally 75 mph - 80 mph on the highways. Troopers looking for 18 wheelers who are overloaded or don't have the right permits.
Arizona: Arizona = California
Nevada: Nevada = California- Depends on the trooper. They don't like SoCal'ers coming up Hwy 15 fast. But then again - how do you speed in a traffic jam? Anomaly: Las Vegas. Each light is a drag race with everyone else.
Who can add more states?

FLORIDA...the average driver is either A. drunk or B. extremely elderly, turn signal on since they left home this morning, can't see or hear very well, reflexes poor, on medications, and is driving 23 mph in the fast lane . or C. in miami area, sticking your gun out the window and pointing it at the next driver is considered a turn signal. :-5

My husband, who has gotten 2 speeding tickets in one month by the way
, always says it is okay to go 5 miles over the posted speed limit. He was going faster than that when he got the tickets though. Anyways, a state police person pulled my sister over and when she said she was only 3 miles over the speed limit, he told her the posted speed limit is what it means. That if they thought 5 m.p.h. faster were safe, they'd post the speed limit as such.

Being a Californian, I am no stranger to crazy drivers, but here in New Zealand drivers mush have a DEATH WISH. No such thing as defensive driving. It's assertive driving. Pass on blind curves, pass on blind curves going up a hill, get right on someones tail at 75 mph so you can be sure and see when it's time to pass over the double line. The highway deaths per capita are pretty bad and will attest to my statements. My brother in law, who is usually a normal sane individual, turns into a madman behind the wheel.

I must confess to double standards in build up areas speeding bad every time. On a crowded motorway you can't get up to 70 most of the time. On the other hand late at night or on an empty motorway 80-90 no problem and why not. It's not excessive speed but inappropriate speed.
We have a problem up here with mainly southern drivers who are not used to what are often enough quiet roads that are great fun to drive on. they can't handle a car at speed because they are used to motorways, you meet them in the middle of the road on bends usually because they lack the practice and can't corner properly and lose it half way round. Biggest nightmare is on roads switching from single track to dual and foreign tourists who forget which country they are in. I had a minor accident in france with an english driver. I was on the right side of the road he wasn't, he got outb the car started asking what the H989*L I thought I was doing on the wrong side of the road then it dawned on him. Minor enough to be funny.

I'm surprised by the blase atitude of these Americans - do they just get a fine, and that's it? In the UK, speeding penalties are broadly dependant on whether you're going at the limit, or the limit +10% +2MPH, less than 20MPH over the limit, or more than 20MPH over the limit, or whether you're going 100MPH+.
The normal "domestic environment" limit is 30MPH.
Most roads have a 60MPH limit.
Dual carriageways and motorways have a 70MPH limit.
If you're doing whatever the speed limit is, you are *generally* safe - although this is a maximum limit in good conditions. You might very rarely get in trouble if you crash at the speed limit in bad driving conditions. If you're doing no more than the limit +10% +2MPH you might get stopped and talked to. Over this, up to less than 20MPH over the limit, if you're stopped you will be fined and get 3 points on your licence (when you have 12+ points you are almost certain to be banned from driving for a period of time). If you are doing more than 20MPH over the limit, you will get a bigger fine, and 6 points. If you're doing over 100, you are almost certain to get a hefty fine, and be banned straight away from driving for a while (quite possibly a year - if a court bans you from driving, and you drove there, you won't be allowed to drive back!!).
Gmc, with your quiet roads, I take your point - many people grind down them like tortoises, don't know passing etiquette, etc. They are a PITA. There are also oiks who speed in stupid places, who are dangerous. There's a whole range of driving techniques that help you drive quickly and safely - "Roadcraft" is quite good.

In town/urbanised areas I tend to stick quite well to the limit. Out of town on ordinary roads it depends on the road... maybe up to 75. On motorways/dual carriageways up to 90 or so. These figures are "in a hurry" ones. Normal figures may be well below the speed limit, depending on what I'm doing. Super-yobbo behaviour (very occasional in my case) exceeds these figures by a margin!

Bill/ gmc, there are similar penalties here in USA for improper driving. But it still does not stop the speeders! Not only "points" and possbily having license pulled for a year, but the "insurance companies" add additional high sur-charges for repeated "ticketed" speeders.
Still, I would say about over 70% of the drivers here speed excessivly (dangerously) I mean 25 to 40 miles per hour faster then the posted limit!
That means their first accident (doing 100mph) will most likely be their last.

OK - I thought that you might be able to accumulate speeding offences like
parking tickets! Roughly how does your "points" system or whatnot work?

The point system here works similar as you mentioned that you have. The faster speeding over the posted limit the more points. I believe "3" points is the most one can get for one offense. I think maybe "9" points you have license pulled for year) Fortunately, I don' t know first hand as I have never gotten a speeding ticket (only a parking ticket around 35 years ago, & I fought that & won)
The type roads the speeders I refer to are on what you may call Motorways?
Long streches of Roads that have entrances to get on, & exits to get off.
Here they are called Highways, Expressways, Parkways.

"Slow Speeder" here. I don't condone it. But when I drive from here to a
place about 2 hours away, it's worth your life to try and "just" do 65. I do
70 with cruise control, ALWAYS signal a lane change, and seat belt on.
I always drive the speed limit on "surface" streets, and usually get cussed
out. But there are just too many dogs, kids and maybe a lady cop er two
(AHEM!!) out there so I watch it.
My sister is a Flight Nurse and drives looooong distances to work, she
always speeds but has a decal in the window and hangs her flight suit
iup where it can be seen by the cop approaching her Jeep. Pretty funny,
they always let her off, I think it's something called "professional
courtesy"!
Going over the speed limit though seems a little bit like robbing a bank
of ten bucks... it's still against the law!!
