Children in church

Post by Clint »

Far Rider started me thinking about my memories of children in church.

My most recent one was actually at my father’s memorial service. I officiated and both of my children and their families were there. Soon after I began the eulogy I paused for a moment. My grandson who was almost four years old took advantage of the moment. With a clear voice that could be heard by everyone he said; “it’s my turn now”. There were restrained chuckles heard from all over the room. I’m anxious to see what the future brings for that boy.

I always got kicked out of church as a child. I was even banned from Sunday School. I swear those Methodists don't have any sense of humor. :D

Oh my, what a topic! If my father was preaching, we all sat in the first row or two, and had to be as still as could be. No messing around, he was watching us. And if one of us had been particularly naughty that day, we got to sit in the front row alone-when your brothers and sisters were sitting behind you saying things under their breath that only you heard. Who me, ever sit in the front row!

*laughing*

You could feel their feet kicking under the pews, to just kind of nudge you into remembrance, why you were sitting there in the first place!

JAB wrote: Back in the early 60's, people used to bring their rosaries to Mass every Sunday. Not as much now after Vatican 2.

Once Sunday, this little girl sitting in front of us was fidgeting about and just wouldn't sit still. Her poor mother, finally exasperated, gave the girl her rosary to play with. After playing with it for awhile, she put it on her finger, twirled it around and in a nice clear voice said out loud for all to hear, "Hang on Jesus, you're going for a ride!" :wah:

I didn't know whether to put this in the hymn thread or here... I decided here, since it was my son. When he was 3 he could not pronounce consonants very well. He had the typical, "babytalk" way of speaking. This was his favorite song. He got up in front of church and sang it... 15 years ago... I can still see and hear it...

king was pronounced "ting"

hear sound like "heeyou"

sweet, ROFL, fweet:

I love you, Lord,

And I lift my voice

To worship you.

O my soul, rejoice!

Take joy, my King,

In what you hear.

Let it be a sweet, sweet sound

In your ear.

That is such a funny story. I remember when we had clean up day at church once when I was a kid. The pastor's kids brought their dog along, Wiggles the Lovable Mutt. Now we all wondered what on earth the dog was going to do to help clean the inside of the church-that dog went under the pews and ate the bubble gum stuck there by inconsiderate gum chewers! Gosh, I rolled all over the place laughing as that dog ate up the gum.

Then when we had finished our good deed for the day, we all played hide and seek in the church, running in and out of the baptistry, hiding under the pastor's desk, rustling through the church kitchen to see if there were any cookies to dispose of! We were such angels of mercy!

Always wondered what it was like to sit in the back pew, where the ladies sit with the little ones. I always played the piano, someone watched my kids-all 4 of them! But now I sit in the back row, because that is where my husband's wheelchair fits, and he is watched by the young moms while I play the piano, then come down to sit by him. I watch the innocent children, and their antics every Sunday, it is so much fun.

When our children were young a lady and her little boy came into church and sat at the pew in front of us...he was a wiggle-worm and constantly being hushed and quieted by his mother...when the outside doors were closed so the pastor could speak...she told him that he had to listed to the sermon as the door was closed...as soon as church was over the pastor walked down the aisle to the front so he could greet people and this little boy piped up loud and clear...Okay Mom can we go now? God has gone.

Our pastor smoked in his office...the kindergarten was held in the church basement...the kindergarten teacher finally had had it with one little boy and told him if he didn't behave she was going to report it to the pastor...the little boy ran to the bottom of the stairs that led to his office and told the teacher."He isn't there, I can't smell him."

I remember that when I was a little kid that pastor standing up there in the pulpit with his robe and vestments made me think that if he wasn’t God, he was second in command.

at Christmas time we had erected a large Christmas tree in the choir section in front of church and the choir had to use the choir loft behind and above us....A Spanish-American family came to church and brought a beautiful little girl about 3..she kept turning to her dad and saying "Daddy" and he would say "shhh", after about the fifth time she said "Daddy" and him shushing her he finally said " Be quiet" and she said loud and clear " OK, I just wanted you to look at the dam tree".....everyone had hands over their mouths and trying to not laugh...the dad picked up the little girl and left the church...we never saw them again.

I remember a pastor coming down from his pulpit to talk to a friend and me. Does my mother remember it the same way?

I remember getting dressed up for Sunday school. Mum would always want me to wear a 'cutsie' pink dress or something. I would want to wear a tracksuit, pants - basically anything that was not pink and was not a dress. I was a bit of a tomboy!

No, I do not remember that unless you are talking about the pastor at the different church we went to occasionally...and you challenged his sermon.

That's what I remember too. The pastor didn't appreciate my interest in aviation.

My mother liked me to get dressed up too. I remember a brand new pair of slacks that I tore the knees out of before I even got in the car to leave for church. I fell on the concrete driveway while I was horsing around as I remember. That would be about 49 years ago.

:driving: :-6

randall again,

Just came across the "going to church" stories.

Our minister who had already been in Palestine during the First World War joined the British Army as soon as the Second World War started and enlisted as a padre - he had been in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the first war.

ON one posting it was obvious that the station commander knew little about dealing with or using a padre.

He was given a fairly large office with a desk chair and telephone which sometimes worked.

Still he felt inferior and out of place, he just wasn't doing "his bit" - a common British term during the war.

He saw some old filing cabinets. The metal ones with three drawers which pull out.

That gave him an Idea.

He had them transported around to his office and then wondered for a day or two what to put into them and how to label them to make them look important.

A message from Heaven came in a flash after a few hours contemplation.

He cut out three name cards to fit into their appropriate slots on the front of the drawers.

When his commander came in to see him he was flabbergasted to see the drawers marked "SACRED", "VERY SACRED" and "TOP SACRED".

He had found his place at last.

God bless,

randall

Years ago they held kindergarten classes in the church basement during the week...one little boy, a true menace continued to act up and the teacher told him that if he didn't stop she would report him to the pastor of the church...the little guy went to the bottom of the steps leading up to the pastors study where the pastor studied and smoked his cigars...the little boy turned around and told the teacher " You can't tell on me...the pastor isn't there, I can't smell him."

All that stressing for nothing!!!

We have a practice of bringing all the children up front each week. All the men surround them and pray a blessing over them as well as a hedge of protection around them. I look forward to that time in the service every week.

I love what my church does. We have a very lively praise and worship time, and many people will wave banners, etc. in the front of the church, people will dance, etc. They have two, um, like umbrella stands, with the flags/banners in them One has large ones, and the other has smaller ones. The kids love to come up and get a smaller flag and dance and wave it before the Lord. I'm sure that the Lord enjoys seeing His little ones having so much fun! The little ones, like 3 and 4 years old, will sometimes want to sword-fight with the flags, but that is discouraged quickly by their parents:wah: ! The children are always in church for the praise and worship, then they are dismissed to their classes for the sermon.
Think positive. And if you can't, fake it 'til you make it.

It is sad how long it has been since I've gone to Church.

No excuse really as they do have Thursday services as well as Sunday.

On Sundays the kids do get called up for a mini sermon.

Wonder if they do that on Thursdays.

I did use to attend a Assembly of God chruch on Wednesday night.

Then one wendnesday night I went and asked the janitor what happened to the wednesday services and he was like "we haven't had those in years"

Lotto

Vistited rednova since they spammed me with pop unders
