Don't blame you one bit, I think there are too many of these fundraising programmes now. It is spoiling it, people are getting fed up with being made to feel guilty so they 'dip in their pockets'. This is all very well for those who can afford it, but during the recession folks are finding it hard to pay for food, let alone send money to other countries! Sorry if I sound a bit hard, but I feel I've done my bit for the moment, for our home charities. After all, charity begins at home, doesn't it?

You shouldnt feel at all guilty if you cant afford to give to charity.
I am happy that any little money I donate goes to a worthy cause, whether here or abroad. No less deserving because it happens to be in a foreign country. On the contrary. Its extremely rare for children to starve in this rich and developed country. Its very commonplace in a poor and less developed third world state. When was the last time you heard of children dying of Malaria in the UK. 1-3 million children die each year from it, mainly in Africa.
I dont begrudge a penny of it

I get sick to the back teeth with this also although I have been watching Eddie Izzard In 'Marathon Man' on Tv and think his efforts are amazing.
Most folk like myself do our bit any-way. We don't need morons wearing red noses rattling tins at us to make us give more although that's extremly hypocritical coming from me when yearly I rattle tins under noses for the British Legion.
My husband and I have put two children through school In Mombassa as well as given generously to the raising of a new school In their village. We are looking at sponsering two new small one's at the moment now our 'Children' have reached 16 years old.
You will find that most British folk give what they can and when they can. We don't need It rammed down our throats to make us give more. Besides, It Interfere's with Corrie.
I watched a doc very recently that concluded that the bulk of the money from 'Live Aid' had gone to corrupt governemnts that had bought arms and used the money to pay off rebels. The trickle down effect of funding third world countries I do not believe Is worth It.

While it seems the BBC didnt get it totally wrong. Thats what happens to aid in corrupt countries
As The guardian reported...
" Aid always has been – and still is – ripped off by warring factions no matter how well-meaning or competent the international aid agencies. This is simply the nature of conflict and humanitarian crisis. Aid is a resource to be exploited, whether for weapons, personal gain or political power. The Pakistanis and Afghan mujahideen did it; Angola's Unita rebels did it; and so did the government and guerrillas in Ethiopia. Organisations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross openly and transparently assume that some of their aid (30% in Somalia) will be stolen. "
Doesnt mean we should not contribute to the improvement of childrens health. I too have supported a family - in Zimbabwe but most are not able to commit to such support, so make as best a contribution as they can

There has to be an alternative.
The BNP and Labour Government who have proposed Homeward Bound schemes are not far off the mark. Most of Britains Immigrants are from third world countries. By giving a lump sum to any Immigrant wishing to return to their home-land, they are Injecting wealth Into the country first hand without It going through the trickle down effect.
I find It sickening that while this country Is still struggling ( Although Un-employment is down this month) we are in effect, lining the pockets of corrupt governments and paying off waring factions In a far away land.
The problem Is... these Governments have absolutely no consience and If countries were to stop all aid, then they would happily see their people die of starvation. In that respect, the trickle down effect at least gets something trough to the people but not enough... children still die from lack of food and water. No wonder they queue to get Into Britiain.
You can add to that the effects of global warming that see their crops devastated and any work put In, destroyed.
I would much rather see the large amounts of aid stoppedImmediately and the money and resources used to actually finding a way of getting It to the people. I rather welcome the Idea of the SAS just picking off the Dictators.

How come you Edit for "Stupidity" and still posted ?
Did you know many African countries pay more in debt repayments and interest by far than they receive in Aid ?
Did you know many African leaders were manoeuvred into power by departing colonials ?

"Home" with regard to donations to charity, is my own country. Oh I did send a donation to the Tsunami disaster in the Philippines, I suppose that is a little different.
But, as already mentioned, an awful lot of money and aid generally seems to be stolen by the authorities of the countries that receive such money and aid and is diverted to armies etc., and not to the tragic people that it was meant for. How this heartless action can be avoided is a severe problem to aid agencies, and I would not know how things can be changed so that the aid gets to the proper targets. :-5
