PayPal is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet.

My questions are: Do any of you use this service and is it safe?

Paypal is much safer than just giving out your credit card number, I have trusted them for years.

I've never used it as I don't trust it. I can't find a Wii at any store around, and I went to many, so I am going to order it online using a prepaid Visa. Safer, IMO.

I've only used PayPal to pay for my FG membership, and did start getting emails from someone pretending to be from PayPal....It was a scam. They asked me for personal info.

paypal is probably safer than giving out your credit card account info directly. Just don't click on links that say they are from paypal and enter your username and password. Could be someone spoofing the site. Always go to paypal's site from your own bookmarks, or a reputable site like ebay.

My husband buys antique fishing reels on E Bay, renovates them and re-sells all by Pay Pal. Yes, It's highly reliable and PayPal even have their own policies where they will refund your money if you have been genuinely ripped Off. You can also get a Paypal visa card now. I've got one and It can be used In any store that takes Visa.

Use it a lot. Same and convenient.

Some folks won't accept it, because the payee pays the fees. Others won't because Paypal is because it has terrific buyer protection.

I will not buy online product from someone who refuses Paypal.

What's not mentioned in the thread is how Paypal compares with online banking, as far as security's concerned. Both involve having money in a place where, if your account name and password or your credit/debit card details are given to criminals, you'll be robbed.

Every time you give your credit/debit card over a counter to a shop you're at the mercy of the shop assistant. If he then sells the details to a criminal, or uses the details himself, you'll also be robbed.

Every time you respond to a bogus email request for your details you're in the same boat, whether what you reveal are your Paypal or your online banking account secrets.

What's far less likely is either Paypal or an online bank allowing those details to be stolen from their own records. To that extent they're a safe place to keep money. The lapses which allow criminals to spend your own credit always involve theft from the account holder, not from the account issuer.

Whenever you type in your online password to any site it really has to be your own responsibility to be sure the details are going to the right place. If you type them into a site which has been made to look like a legitimate business but has actually been constructed by a criminal then yes, you've been duped, but it's scarcely Paypal's fault any more than it would be the online bank's fault or the card company's fault. At that point you've been scammed.

is it safe? Undoubtedly it's safe. The real question is whether or not you're competent to keep your money anywhere but under the mattress.
