Anyone here good with open office? specifically the database. I've got things working the way I want but am having trouble saving it on my back up hard drive. I use an external Hard drive and it seems to work OK but I want to be able to save it on several and also have several different databases the briefcase doesn't seem to back it up properly-I get a message that says in use by another when there is more than one database to back up but works OK when there is only one. Is it just a case I can only have one-which isn't actually a major problem since I can have as many tables etc that I want.

Any comments? anyone?

I've tried the help forums but no one reponded.

Did you successfully close down the quickstarter as well as OpenOffice before starting the backup?

Is there a started OpenOffice service on your services list at that point? I've no idea what name it would have but the database might bring one up. Stopping it would release the files for the briefcase, if you find one.

The Task Manager will show you a list of all active programs and services. I expect you'll be looking for lines with OO or OOo in the names.

If this is still an issue come the evening let me know. I can't help, but I have a friend who might be able to.

Not sure what you meant by quickstarter but I do have it on the bottom line I'll try exiting it first next time. i don't actually use it and usually open a documentor go in from programmes-I prfer a minimalistic desktop and don't keep a large number of icons on it.

No know to check that. I think you may be right about the quickstarter, I can't remember how to access the task bar to remove it

If it's in the system tray, right-click and exit. If it doesn't show then ctrl-alt-del and go to the task manager, find it in the process list and kill it there.

Got it, that does seem to be at the root of it. When I exit it is seems to turn itself back on when I use open office so I've unchecked the box that says load at start up. A table input on a database in the main drive wasn't backing up automatically using briefcase-I had to go in and tell it to update manually but hopefully that's been the cause and it will work properly from now on.

I have a paperless office and am trying to create a client relationship database for myself-not being terribly IT literate it's a challenge but I reckon the only way to be future proof is do it myself-at least open office has backward capability that works with my older files. I could buy in the expertise or a custom made database but then you are at the mercy of the provider and-it seems ever rising costs. I've managed to find on line tutorials and the like but its problems like this I find hard to find a solution to.

Thanks very much for the help I really appreciate it.

When I've made alterations to a table in the database it doesn't backup automatically using briefcase-The update box says needs updating but the little popup box that shows which files are to be updated indicates it is already it as already updated-although in fact it isn't I have to go in and tell it to replace the backed up file with the new one.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? i can back it up but it's annoying me.

Does the popup use the word "orphan" anywhere?

How To Use the Briefcase Feature in Windows XP "troubleshooting" is worth reading, especially the bit about if you move a file and then move it back to the original location.

Nope. the popup box I am referring to is the update dialogue box. It says already updated but it isn't. I'm not sure if it's me or just a compatibility issue with open office and Microsoft or something I am doing wrong.

If it were me and if Briefcase were the required backup program to be used, I think I'd start a new Briefcase folder and put the database files into it from scratch to see whether the updates work there. If they do then you might like to simply rebuild your backup list in the new Briefcase folder and scrap the old one.

If you want to consider an alternative backup strategy with a different program I could make a recommendation or two.

I might try that just to see if it makes a difference. I've got several back ups having had the experience of losing an original and one back up due to a virus-I am using external hard drives.

What other programmes would you suggest?
