At least you had your mothers laptop. What's his/her laptop name?

Is there anyone who doesn't name their computers? I thought it was universal practice. Though it's odd when the machine's gone through so many part-by-part upgrades, including the case, that the only thing remaining of the original is the network card. It's still obviously the same computer though.

Describe, in detail, the ancient laptop.

The one I've maintained longest is a friend's, I've done all the upgrades to Wayne since it was a 386. I upgraded Wayne's memory to 4MB, I put in a second disk drive for backups, I upgraded the modem from v22bis to v32 around the same time as I took it from MS-DOS 3.3 to 6.22, then I jumped the motherboard and processor and hard drive to a Pentium 60 with Windows 3.11. It stayed Wayne through all those changes because, I think, Wayne's user files and directory structures stayed with it throughout. It's had a lot of changes since but it's all still there, various levels of Wayne all archived neatly into the backup space. A lot of the data would be hard to read because re-installing the programs that created them is next to impossible. Wayne no longer has a 5.25 inch double-density floppy drive, for example. It's a perfect reason not to use proprietary formats, there's data in the Smart database format for example.

Thinking about it, I've kept my dad's system upgraded with the same accumulating data directories for five years longer than Wayne, his first computer started out in 1982 and his earliest correspondence and spreadsheets and datafiles start out from then. What's worse, he's still using Smart and an Xtree clone in DOS windows alongside Firefox and whatever more recent programs he's using. I'm not sure whether he let go of WordPerfect 4.2, he occasionally makes me check it can still print to his long-carriage dot matrix printer. Which is still loaded with continuous stationery.

I'd better stop, I'm getting off-topic.

What more recent programs? I've not seen him run up Xtree in a while but yes, he still uses WP4.2 for his letters and you might have installed Firefox but he still uses the Mozilla that preceded it.

Reminds me of Trigger's comment about his broom.

He reckons he has had the same one for many years, "I have had different handles and heads fitted.....but it's the same one I was issued all those years ago"
I thought I knew more than this until I opened my mouth

Both my desktop and laptop broke down. My desktop is finally fixed and my laptop will be fixed soon. Cost me about $500 to have them fixed:-1
