A National Day of Remembrance

Post by anastrophe »

I'm quite certain this isn't an original idea, but i think it's a good idea nonetheless.

After September 11th, 2001, The United States were very much united in our shared grief over the terrorist attacks that killed thousands, and brought down the World Trade Center twin towers. Within days, our neighborhood was transformed with American flags, on nearly every home. It was a way for people to express our shared emotions over this attack.

I've never owned a 'display' american flag. My parents used to put the flag out on the fourth of july of course, but that was when i was a kid, so long ago.

My wife and i back in 2001 found a smallish flag - maybe one foot by two foot - which we stuck in our fence, it was the best we could do.

Yesterday we went down to the local hardware store, and bought a real flag. it was inexpensive - $8.00, and certainly isn't made to weather the elements too much. but it included a mounting bracket and pole, so we were all set.

this morning, we mounted it on the front of our house.

I think it would be a good tradition if people displayed the flag on september 11th, just as is often done on national holidays - the fourth, memorial day, veterans day, etc.. I don't expect, nor do i ever want, september 11th to become a national holiday. but it should be a day for reflection, and a day when we can express our shared experience of being americans, for better or for worse.

i'm sure the lunatic fringe will scoff, always wanting to point out all that's wrong with america, suggesting that the attacks were staged by the evil bush-cheney-rice-rove-rumsfeld-wolfowitz cabal. whatever. they're americans too. scoff all you want. i'll remember the 3,000+ innocent people who were slaughtered by ideologically driven madmen.

Oh Anastrophe, who would scoff at your suggestion? It is sad to think that for a longtime afterwards everyone had flags, displayed them proudly, were very patriotic. And as time goes on, the red, white and blue flags slowly came down. It would be nice if everyone remembered today, in memory of those who died. I noticed that they named it Patriot Day, but sometimes the American public needs a little jostling to get them to pay attention to events that are imperative to recall.

With the exception of the bad weather months of winter We've been flying a flag since 9-11. I also have a mezuzah on my door post and a Vietnam Service Medal on the bumper of my pickup. It's who I am and that is still allowed in America. 9-11 reinforced that little bit of boldness in me.

We had a flag up before 9/11. Luckily we had a large flagpole in the front yard.

Now, we just have a couple of those flags that stick on the windows. The flag we had on the outside of the garage got ripped of by one of the 'summer whip-ups' we have here in Florida. But, I did put out 5 small flags that stick in the ground today.

Nothing wrong or anything to scoff at, that's for sure!

By the way...many of my neighbors have theirs up too!

Hey "A" = I have the coffin flag from my Dad - he died in 1961 and there only 48 stars on it. I fly this flag with soooo much pride every chance I get because it represents his life for our country. I have had several people tell me that it is against this country to fly his flag because there are 50 states now. I have been told by veterans of Viet Nam that I need to turn in my father's coffin flag for the newer- 50 states flag. I have always felt great honor in flying my father's coffin flag and I will continue to fly the flag under which my Dad gave his life.

I'd sure like to hear from some veterans myself on that one. In fact, I'm going to make it a point to ask some of them. I'd be proud as hell to fly that flag, too, NV, and I think you should keep flying it. (Not that I thought for a second you'd stop!! :yh_wink )

Fly it with pride. The 48 stars make it unique and special because of when your Dad died.

I live in a flag-flying capitol...hundreds of flags along the highways through town on every patriotic holiday. I wouldn't be surprised if they were all out today..Maybe not, but I think it's a fine idea.

definitely fly that 48 star flag. it's nonsense that it's somehow 'against' the country. my mom still has the one that was my uncle's - who died in the battle of the bulge - there's a little bit of info about him on the memorial site i made when my dad died.
