Tattooing a 7 year old with a gang sign is obviously regarded as worse in the US.
Here is a petition to have the judge disbarred because of this case.

Well, yes Peg. The petition criticizes the judge for having the temerity to sentence those two paragons of society after running what they perceive to be a biased trial which found them guilty in the first place and calls for his sacking. I expect it's being signed by fellow-faith-based-Christians, don't you?
I only brought the case into the thread for comparison because the judge dealt so clemently with the two defendants. "Prosecutors said the couple had recklessly killed the youngest of their four children by ignoring clear symptoms of severe illness as she became too weak to speak, eat, drink or walk. They said the couple had a legal duty to take their daughter to a doctor but had instead relied totally on prayer for healing. Kara died on the floor of the family's rural home as people surrounded her and prayed. The emergency services were only called after she stopped breathing. In their defence, the parents said they believed healing came from God, and that they had not expected their daughter to die as they prayed for her". That's what they pulled six months jail time for. This thread's had people demanding the tattooist gets jailed for life, and your petition is critical of the judge for sentencing those two to any jail time at all!
The more I learn of America the clearer the picture I get of a society which has rejected all sense of moral value in exchange for tribal identity. It's entirely driven by Us and Them. We can do nothing wrong, They have no business being alive in the first place. Substitute any value at all for They - Criminals, Islamic Fundamentalists, Communists, Addicts, they're all aspects of the same underlying problem of tribal blindness.

In actuality America is primarily comprised of individuals and families that have very little to do with the big headline and controversial issues you read about and base your opinions on. I say that because I believe most of us function independently, free from governmental policy, we live our own lives as we see fit. The America I know, meaning co-workers, neighbors, people I meet along the way, chat with at the coffee shop or in line at the grocers, have built their lives based on their own personal values.
The Federal entity and over zealous religous orginizations that make news dont appear to impact most of us. Were not sheep, we can make our own minds up about things and we do.
You make blanket statements about America yet you dont know America. You dont know my neighbors or our farmers, small business owners, athletes, clergy, store clerks. In other words my America, our America is for the most part peaceful, kind, loving, funny, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, home owners, hard working people that go about our business free from the dramatic conflicts that you see on the news.
To make such a broad statement about almost 300,000,000 people you know absolutely nothing about diminishes your credibility considerably.
America isnt a headline, its individuals living their lives quite reasonably.
Much the same way the good citizens in the UK do I suspect.

Well, I should think that to really understand Americans you would have to live amongst us to find out who we are.
I couldnt possibly begin to evaluate N. Koreas citizens by its governments actions. Nor any other peoples of the world. In my heart, fundamentally I believe we are the same. Same instincts, same desires, different methodology. The one thing that may seperate America from others is that we have the Corvette. Too bad, so sad.

I think, taken by and large, what Americans have posted on FG as far as their bowel-wrenching hatred of convicts, their bigoted detestation of towelheads, their tribal indifference toward the extent of foreign deaths resulting from the "liberation" of Iraq, their inhumane indifference toward the social welfare of undocumented US residents is all indicative of what Americans are really like. Shrugging it off as one large collective unwinding joke sounds a bit hollow.

The one thing that may seperate America from others is that we have the Corvette.
There you are you see to you a corvette is a sports car to us it is a type of warship the most famous being the flower class in ww2. Imagine going to war on HMS Daisy?
We do actually get them over here
YouTube - Top Gear: Chevrolet Corvette
Just nobody buys them cos we need to be able to go round corners. They sell chrysler sebrings on a buy one get one free basis (I kid you not). On the other hand the korean built chevvy my wife has is pretty good but is so naff it's cool. The kind of car that says I don't care what people think. GM Europe and japan actually make pretty good cars that stand comparison with anyone's-goodness knows why the American ones seem-allegedly- to be so bad.
Joking aside it is startling how often religion comes in to any political discussion and a black and white way of viewing how things should be.

I have a terrible suspicion that you don't have much grasp of statistics as a subject.
There's a population. You take a sample of the population. It's bound to be unrepresentatively skewed to some extent. You then analyse the sample. You can give the probability of the population being misrepresented by the analysis, taking the skew and the sample size and the population size into account. I might not be able to test US public opinion precisely by talking to people on FG but the chance that the opinions expressed on FG are uniquely unrepresentative of the US population as a whole is infinitesimally small.

I dont blame you here. I can't stand Mcdonalds and can barely take KFC. Remember though, you're the ones who let them build and continue to support by buying their products. I myself would rather go to a corner cafe.

This makes me laugh. Loudness--ever been to a footie game in England? I'm sure there are loud obnoxious Americans just like Brits, Italians, Mexicans etc. etc. Overbearing attitudes? How bout the uppity English attitude many of your countrymen show.

Thank you for this last paragraph. For the most part I have not commented on the constant jabs shot across the bows of Americans. Quite honestly they don't bother me because I know most are thrown out as generalizations that come from being aggravated over some of the politics shown from recent administrations. This doesn't mean all of us Americans agree with all the decisions made on Americas behalf.

Another thing we have followed America is adopting gang culture in some inner cities.
I don't think you can get a 'discrete' gang icon tattoo.
I don't think it is all about the tattoo alone, think UK feral chavs with sub machine guns, and you might be getting the logic behind such reactions.
Famously the quote about our two countries being divided by a common language, run deeper than that, attitudes shaped by history, and the need to be independently able to safeguard yourself and family may have some bearing.
In the UK we have always looked at some authority for our protection, unlike the US.

I just reread this thread, I didn't find one single post from any American that suggested this man should be "locked up for life". Some said he should be punished, some just showed shock that this man would have his 7 year old son tatooed.

I don't know how many people here in Forum Garden you actually do talk to, in a two-way process, Spot - but I looked in the Today's Posts index for names of current regulars who are Americans and came up with this:
Chonsi, Hoppy, Kathy Ellen, Cars, Omni Skittles, Peg, Nomad, Carla, YZGI, Patsy, gsducks, along-for-the-ride, Floppy, mustang, Lon - oh yes, and Tombstone is an American too, isn't he???
I suggest that they are as individual and different from each other as you yourself are from Oscar, Carolly, Open Mind, Ian, Rapunzel, Betty Boop, Jimbo and Bruv.

It is obvious to me that you posses little understanding of American culture or society by your posts on this thread. To assume that we have a lack of empathy is what is dispiriting. Maybe we do not appreciate the damage that these people who we want locked up for life have done to our communities. Perhaps it is that we are so sick of people who do things like tattoo a 7 year old with a tattoo that can get the child killed, that we throw our hands up and say "Just lock them up!" But to expect any kind of empathy for something like that would be wrong.
Americans are not Christians by nature. I am not Christian. My parents are not Christian. So to be upset with our lack of Christian charity does not seem appropriate as our society is made up of many faiths. Even the ones that may not be as recognized or understood as Christianity.
You know next nothing about the traits of our nation. The reasons that stories like the one about the tattoo on the 7 year old make the news is because they are controversial. We debate these issues. Whether or not the crime is serious, whether or not the man should face a life sentence. Often times we agree to disagree.
Your generalizations about my culture and heritage are offensive and in my opinion show an ignorance of the knowledge you claim to have.

Our society is made up of many faiths yes & when the chips are down (WTC bombings) everyone is this country regardless of faith showed their true colors with loads of help. IMO, I don't think its fair or otherwise to go and bash another country when somebody has never visited that country to see that we are just like them...

I actually agree with you on this. It all depends on the culture you were brought up into. Not unlike being brought up in the west tends to push you toward Christianity and circumcision, being brought up in the far east pushes you toward Islam. Being brought up in Tahiti very well may have you tattooing your children.
