which is the edict by the mayor of new orleans. people are washing their dishes in the toxic sewage, and refusing to leave. the stench of death hangs in the air and body collection will begin in earnest. so as soon as everyone who wants out is gone, they are going to force people out. it's a public health and safety issue. ......Get Out or We'll Drag You....
get out or we'll drag you out...
They were supposed to be out over a week ago. They have created a huge burden on the rescue and emergency management effort. The Mayor is finally doing something right. (I'm losing my sympathy for the Mayor and Governor)

It has to be. Why else? Their impact on the effort is no less negative though.

Let them stay, if they die of the conditions, it is their own fault.
It is sad, so very sad, but the city of New Orleans must be shut down completely and evacuated by citizans.

Very true, however, at some point they really should have realized that possessions are worth less than their lives. The water is contaminated with gawd knows what and really, that city is a goner for many months. It's so sad, but I'm at the point to where my sympathy is just about gone for those refusing to leave. They aren't helping anyone and are causing problems for the rescuers trying to help them.
It would not surprise me for the order to be given to just "torch" or otherwise demolish a good part of New Orleans to fight the diseases and whatever else is lurching in the air and water.

I don't think I would be able to go and leave my precious girl pup behind.
To starve to death. Maybe if there was a vet there to euthanize her.
Or if a police officer would agree to shoot her for me. I know I would need
to go but I'd have to think of another way if they wouldn't let me take my
girl.

This really cracks me up. "Nope, I'm not leaving, this is home." Okay, bunkie, your home is now under water, get it?? U-N-D-E-R-W-A-T-E-R. What are you gonna do?? Grow gills??
It's pretty damn selfish, if you ask me, that these people who won't leave don't consider the fact that they are unnecessarily risking the lives of the rescue workers whose time should be spent taking care of the people that want out and can't GET out. Thoughtless AND stupid.

Until I've walked a mile in their shoes, I can't put down people who obviously must want to stay and live under such deplorable conditions. I don't understand why they would want to stay, but I'm sure they have their own, personal reasons.

Hi,
I work in the emergency service in Australia, we always take pets too when we rescue people. Pets can be anything from your pet pig to your pet mouse it doesn't matter what. It must pose a huge problem though in a disaster as big as New Orleans, but some people are so attached to their pets they won't go with out them.

some won't leave because they're afraid of looters, despite the fact their homes are under water and there's nothing left. some won't leave because of pets. some won't leave because they have become delusional, or really don't comprehend the danger they are in. so...they're all going to die if they don't get out. e coli is in the water and the mosquitoes have come out in force , are feeding on the dead, then biting the living. this is a biological HOT zone.

How difficult is it to understand, "There's sh!t and decomposing flesh in the water you're surrounded by...get out now."???? Seems fairly simple, to me.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm actually a Brit livng in the land of OZ, it is home to me though.
I have two black labradors, one beagle, one cat, three teenagers and two teenage student borders the live with me. All our bathrooms have doors on them too.
I would definatly leave home in a disaster, but would want to take my pets if there was a boat big enough for us, actually we tie an animals legs together if we put them in a flood boat so they can't jump about. Did I mention I might take my teengers too if the're nice to me.

We are endowed with certain inalienable rights, among them the right to be stupid. Selfish? Sure. Dangerous? Yup. Insane? Possibly. Public health hazzard? You'd have to show me that one. Within their rights? Absolutely.
We cannot evict people from their own homes simply for their safety. Tell 'em "you stay, you die, we won't help." If they insist on staying, then that's that.
Mind you, I think suicide should not be criminalized, either.

by the same token if someone is non compos mentis, we have mechanisms in the law to save them from their own insanity. to protect them and others if they are a danger to themselves or others. and rightfully so.

I agree about peoples rights ACC....selfish attitude though because they will be afforded the attention that can be better used elsewhere. How are they going to get food, who will they blame when they get sick ? Yeh...that BLAME thing again. The authorities have enough on their plates at the moment.

The problem is that some of them will be so distraught that they won't actually care at this point in time wether or not they do die, they can't see any reason to go on especially those with no family, or families they feel don't need them any more, life just won't seem like it's worth living right now.
If they simply refuse to go, do you have a right to force them off their own property? and if so why not shoot them with a sedative and then go in and pick them up?

Is simply refusing to leave enough justification to call them crazy? I don't think so. If it were, anybody on trial for murder could plead not guilty by reason of insanity. What sane person would kill in cold blood?

Something to remember is that not all of these people are in flooded
areas with no resources. I read in the paper this morning about one man
in particular who has many cases of water, food storage, a generator,
wine coffee and cartons of cigs and he says he's staying, he's fine.
Another man sweeps up every day, has mosquito spray and bleaches
drains around his home.
And I was watching a Spanish language station and saw a reporter go
in to one of the open bars in the French Quarter. Everybody there having
an alcohol-fueled grand old time, they even had ICE!
Some power has been restored, cell phone towers (although those people
have been shot at, also) are up.
It just makes me think back to all the times we've been told to prepare
to fend for ourselves for an extended period of time. (The night of the
Quake of '89, I had neighbors peering over my back fence wondering
how in the heck I had LIGHT and smelling my potstickers cooking!)
(Coleman lantern and stove
)
Anyway, I do realize the need for everybody to go but I guess I'm
wishy-washy in that I understand people's desire to not leave their
homes.

Last night I saw a video on Bill O'Reilly of a cop tackling an old lady to carry her out of her own house - private property she owned and did not wish to leave, and did not invite anyone into.
Today I watched a live press conference in which a N.O. prosecutor denied any forced evacuations, that they were only strongly encouraging people to leave and she had not heard of any instance of the use of force.
Good ol' big brother protecting people from themselves.
Good ol' big brother knows better than mere silly citizens.
