AFTR's Daily Commute

Post by along-for-the-ride »

I just finished reading the book, "Parallel Lives", which is about the lives of several couples from Victorian England and their relationships. Quite interesting. One of the couples involved was Charles Dickens and his wife. ( A sad ending to their marriage) His wife was not his first love:

"Maria Beadnell

Maria Beadnell was the first love of Charles Dickens. They met in 1830 and he fell madly in love with her. For Charles it was love at first sight. His mind was quickly filled with thoughts of ever-lasting romance and marriage.

However her parents did not approve of the relationship. Mr. Beadnell was a banker. He felt that Charles was too young and lacking in prospects to be considered a serious suitor.

During these years Dickens worked as a court stenographer and shorthand reporter. His own dissatisfaction with his career and a desire to make a more favorable impression with the Beadnells lead him to consider becoming an actor. He even went so far as to schedule an audition. However he was sick on that day and missed his appointment.

The youthful Maria later inspired the character of Dora in David Copperfield:

I don't remember who was there, except Dora. I have not the least idea what we had for dinner, besides Dora. My impression is, that I dined off Dora, entirely, and sent away half-a-dozen plates untouched. I sat next to her. I talked to her. She had the most delightful little voice, the gayest little laugh, the pleasantest and most fascinating little ways, that ever led a lost youth into hopeless slavery. She was rather diminutive altogether. So much the more precious, I thought. - David Copperfield

We'll never know the nature of Maria's feelings for Charles. She sometimes treated him with indifference and sometimes seemed to encourage his affections. Later in life she claimed that she truly cared for him.

In early 1833, when Charles became twenty one, he threw himself a coming-of-age party. The Beadnells were invited and accepted the invitation. During the evening Dickens was able to speak privately to Maria. He spoke of his feelings for her. She insulted him badly by referring to him as a "boy".

Their relationship ended later that year. Maria Beadnell went on to become Mrs. Henry Winter.

After a twenty-four year separation Maria contacted Dickens. They were both married and Dickens, the man who had been lacking in prospects, had become a famous author.

Dickens was thrilled upon receiving her letter. The letter from Maria brought back the memories of his intense love for her and perhaps fantasies of what might have been.

In 1855 they agreed to a secret meeting without their spouses. Maria warned Dickens that she was not the same young woman that he remembered. Despite her warnings he apparently was surprised at the changes he saw in his first love. His feelings inspired him to base the character of of Flora Finching in Little Dorrit on Maria.

Flora, always tall, had grown to be very broad too, and short of breath; but that was not much. Flora, whom he had left a lily, had become a peony; but that was not much. Flora, who had seemed enchanting in all she said and thought, was diffuse and silly. That was much. Flora, who had been spoiled and artless long ago, was determined to be spoiled and artless now. That was a fatal blow. - Little Dorrit

They met once more for a dinner with their spouses. However after that, despite Maria's wishes for further contact, Dickens avoided her."

This made me consider if I would want a reunion with my first boyfriend from my youth. I think not. I would prefer for him to remember me (if he still thinks of me now and then :wah:)as I used to be then. I am not unattractive.................just 40 years older. ;)

What do you think?

I'm going to drive about a 5 hour freeway drive next week. There are lots of semitrucks that drive this road and it is very windy. I don't like it!

Thank you, Duckie. If it wasn't for you, I'd starve. :wah:

When you drive on a very windy day, you do feel the pull of the wind on your vehicle. Gotta keep those hands on the steering wheel.;)

I just read this letter from Dear Abby. So sad. What do you think?

DEAR ABBY: My husband berates and belittles me constantly. He calls me "worthless, stupid, lazy, no-good and crazy." He controls my every move and follows me around the kitchen when I'm trying to cook. I got so nervous last week that I dropped a kettle of soup and burned myself.

He followed me into the laundry room, watched me load the washer before putting in the detergent, then yelled at me that I was doing it "backward." He removes the dishes from the dishwasher and rearranges them so they're the way he thinks they should be. He says I can't do anything right, and I'm starting to believe him.

I leave the house only to buy groceries because I'm afraid people are laughing and staring at me. I sleep half the day. I used to go out and have fun; now I sit at home with the drapes drawn. I don't have the energy to clean the house. I cry every day.

Our two boys are 8 and 11. He controls their every move, too. There's so much stress in this house they are starting to turn against him.

The emotional abuse started a couple of years ago. When I try to discuss it, he calls me crazy and a liar and denies it. I used to be healthy as a horse, but now I have headaches and stomach pains.

Friends say I should leave, but I can't just pick up and walk out with two sons to raise. He threatens to get custody because I am "insane." I stay because I don't want to lose my boys. I'm afraid to see a doctor. He may say I'm crazy, too. Please help me. -- LESS THAN ZERO IN ILLINOIS

DEAR LESS THAN ZERO: Please trust me and consult a doctor immediately. Your symptoms are probably stress-related. You may also be depressed from the unrelenting abuse.

You are not crazy, but your husband may be. Once you have spoken to your doctor, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline. They can help you and the boys escape. Their toll-free number is (800) 799-7233.

Whether your husband is sick or just an abusive bully remains to be seen. But for your sake and your children's, do not tolerate this situation. If you stay, he will not only destroy you emotionally, but also your boys.

Hundreds answer casting call for Redford movie

Posted: Sep 19, 2009 4:38 PM EDT

Updated: Sep 21, 2009 10:04 AM EDT

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Some fresh off the set of the Miley Cyrus movie and some others who have caught the Hollywood bug lined the Oglethorpe Mall this morning for a chance to be in Robert Redford's new feature film, The Conspirator.

Actor and director Redford was not at the mall, but all shapes, sizes, and genders were there. Filming is set to begin in mid-October and will continue into December.

Locals, who are cast, might work with Robin Wright Penn and James McAvoy.

Robin Wright's website states that she will play Mary Surratt, the only woman among a group charged with conspiring to kill the President Lincoln. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero, who reluctantly defends Surratt and in the process comes to believe she is innocent.

Robin Wright Penn is no stranger to Savannah; she filmed Forrest Gump here in 1994.

Sigh! A film directed by Robert Redford......One can only dream............

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Production for The Conspirator, directed by Robert Redford, is still seeking extras for filming set to begin in mid-October and continue through December.

They are still seeking men and women of all ages and types, but have a specific need for:

•Men of all types, ages 18-70, particularly those with facial hair and/or slight builds

•Historical re-enactor types of all ages

Men who have already applies as extras are encouraged to let their hair and facial hair continue to grow.

"Women sizes 0-4"? Well, that dream is dashed. :wah:

"Well, it's a marvelous night for a Moondance

With the stars up above in your eyes

A fantabulous night to make romance

'Neath the cover of October skies

And all the leaves on the trees are falling

To the sound of the breezes that blow

And I'm trying to please to the calling

Of your heart-strings that play soft and low

And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush

And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush."

Autumn Love

Autumn Love

By Jayne Fisher

You know summer is saying her final goodbye when the leaves turn from green to yellow and then others turn into orange, red or even purple. You breathe in the crisp air and notice the sweet aroma of summer has turned into the smell of autumn rain still trapped within the skin of clouds and lovers. One senses that this scent of dew will soon become the silent snowflake seeking refuge on your nose. Ah. Autumn has arrived and turns your head with her unmasking of a palette so bright as she begins to paint the landscape in hues unimaginable. As if waking from a languid dream you notice that life is in abundant change around you and preparing her creatures for the long cold days of winter.

Soon thoughts turn to pumpkins, homemade pies, raking leaves, crackling fires and steamy hot cider. Autumn is the perfect time for love. No other season comes dressed for the backdrop of a love play like Autumn. With Autumn comes the sense of urgency to get things done quickly before all becomes enveloped in the hush of winter white.

Walking through Autumn leaves with your love brings back a memory of a magic to time as a child when a pile of leaves was so much more than a nuisance. This is a wonderful opportunity to be that child again and play! Invite your sweetheart to hold you tight and just fall into those leaves together and you will find yourself falling in love, perhaps for the first time or the first time this Autumn.

Turn your head and everywhere couples are nestled into each other with soft whispers and their breaths captured in the icy air. Breathe in each others breath and become one. Slip your arms around each other and just take time to notice the days growing shorter and life being lived to the fullest. Harvest these fruits of Autumn and cherish the cycles of our seasons.

Echo again the changes that you see, Autumn., with new beginnings just around the corner.

The temperature here today was 92 degrees. Not autumn-y enough for me. The trees are still green. The flies are still buzzing around for gosh sakes. I guess I shouldn't complain.....just enjoy the warm weather while it lasts. The days are still getting shorter as it is still dark when we leave for work in the morning.

The pleasures of ignorance are as great, in their way, as the pleasures of knowledge. ~Aldous Huxley

The most violent element in society is ignorance. ~Emma Goldman

A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance. ~Saul Bellow

Genuine ignorance is... profitable because it is likely to be accompanied by humility, curiosity, and open mindedness; whereas ability to repeat catch-phrases, cant terms, familiar propositions, gives the conceit of learning and coats the mind with varnish waterproof to new ideas. ~John Dewey

Before we work on artificial intelligence why don't we do something about natural stupidity? ~Steve Polyak

You can swim all day in the Sea of Knowledge and still come out completely dry. Most people do. ~Norman Juster

It is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument. ~William G. McAdoo

A little learning is a dangerous thing, but a lot of ignorance is just as bad. ~Bob Edwards

The trouble with people is not that they don't know but that they know so much that ain't so. ~Josh Billings

Some folks are wise and some are otherwise. ~Tobias Smollett

Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power. ~P.J. O'Rourke

You can be sincere and still be stupid. ~Charles F. Kettering

Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects. ~Will Rogers

Ignorance is a right! Education is eroding one of the few democratic freedoms remaining to us. ~Christopher Andrea

A person is never happy except at the price of some ignorance. ~Anatole France

History shows that there is nothing so easy to enslave and nothing so hard to emancipate as ignorance, hence it becomes the double enemy of civilization. By its servility it is the prey of tyranny, and by its credulity it is the foe of enlightenment. ~Lemuel K. Washburn, Is The Bible Worth Reading And Other Essays

To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of ignorance. ~A. Bronson Alcott

Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance, is the death of knowledge. ~Alfred North Whitehead

My friend & her boyfriend used to rent an apartment (they lived there about 6 mon) but moved out & broke their lease for the following reasons: somebody constantly walking up the steps then all around the aprt, strange apparitions seen through the windows while outside, all windows bolted on the outside (?), I think the last straw was when the landlord finally admitted that there was a murder in the place & said that basically the murderer was still "living" there (he commited suicide).

Haunted Antique Porcelain Dolls

Posted on March 6, 2008

During my lifetime I have had several personal encounters with the paranormal, or supernatural as some people prefer to say. I shared this experience with several members of my family when I was about 12 revolved around a set of antique dolls. Although I was not the one who actually encountered the ghost I was there while it was going on.

My grandmother found a set of antique dolls somewhere and she bought them and brought them to her house. The bodies of the dolls were made of porcelain and their dresses and hats were a combination of silk and feathers.

She put the dolls into a large walk-in closet at the top of the stairs. My older sister lived with our grandparents, her bedroom was just next to the walk-in closet. Right away she started having nightmares. She also told us that she heard an old woman humming and a creaking noise like a rocking chair while she was trying to go to sleep. She prayed and tried to ignore it until she finally fell asleep, but when she did she had nightmares.

Naturally, the adults did not believe her. They said that she had only imagined it and it was natural for a child to have nightmares sometimes. She continued to hear the old woman and to have nightmares. We were all starting to get worried about her and, of course, my other sisters and I believed her. It seems that adults are often closed minded to the possibility of such things.

I should say that none of us made any kind of connection between the dolls and what my sister was experiencing. I remember seeing my grandmother bring the dolls in, but I never paid much attention or thought much about them. It was only later that a connection was discovered.

My grandmother attended a Pentecostal church. She had some people from the church get together during a service to pray for my older sister to try to stop her nightmares.

After the prayer one of the ministers came up to my grandmother and asked her if she had brought anything different into the house. He said that he felt like there was a spirit that was causing the problems. Naturally, she thought of the antique dolls and decided to remove them from her house.

To this day I do not know what she did with the dolls, but I do know that as soon as they were gone my sister stopped hearing the old woman and having the bad dreams.

Somr info I found on the net :

Halloween :yh_pumpkn

"Trick-or-Treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!"

Though you may or may not be quite familiar with this somewhat inconsiderate child's ditty, simply the first words in the song indicate to you what the subject of this article is with quite immediate recognition, regardless of your personal views on the matter.

The subject, of course, is Halloween. More specifically, the Origins of Halloween, and a look into some of the practices most commonly associated with it, including... you guessed it, Trick-or-Treating.

Few people realize that most of the traditions involved with Halloween, and the very occasion of Halloween itself, draws back much further than the often cited 'European spin on a Roman spin on an ancient Pagan holiday'.

An ancient Irish tribe called the 'Celts' had a religious sect called Druids who performed ancient and 'magic' rituals. One of the Druids religious festivals was Oíche Shamhna, celebrated in the transitional stages of Fall/Winter. Samhain was celebrated on what is now October 31st and was held just before the Celtic New Year on the following day.

Winter was one of the roughest times in the ancient days, and many people died as the result of atrocious temperature drops and lack of food caused by premature destruction of the crops by the unforgiving cold. The Druids believed that the boundaries between the world of the living and the world of the dead began greatly blurred at this time, and that the vengeful and restless spirits would wander the earth.

In order to confuse the spirits so that they couldn't be harmed, the Druids would dress in animal skins and masks in order to avoid being identified by the spirits. They also raised up large bonfires and threw animal bones from slaughtered livestock into the fire as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.

Trick-or-Treating:

Though there seems to be much dispute about where the origins of Trick-or-Treating evolved, one widely accepted fact is that in ancient times many cultures placated spirits with food offerings and other gifts. The Druids and Celts were no exception, and this seems to be the most original connotation of Trick-or-Treating. In fact, allegedly they would leave the food offerings out on the doorstep so that passing spirits would be satiated, and mischievous children dressed in their costumes (which were supposed to make them appear as the spirits did), would swoop in and steal off with the savory treats.

Another heavily disputed topic is whether or not modern Trick-or-Treating comes from the Christian practice of 'Souling'. In this practice, people would go door-to-door asking for little square breads which were known as 'Soul Cakes'. In exchange, they would promise to offer up prayers for any recently deceased family members. Sounds a little familiar, wouldn't you say?

The Little Orphan Annie

by

James Whitcomb Riley

Little Orphan Annie’s come to my house to stay.

To wash the cups and saucers up and brush the crumbs away.

To shoo the chickens from the porch and dust the hearth and sweep,

and make the fire and bake the bread to earn her board and keep.

While all us other children, when the supper things is done,

we sit around the kitchen fire and has the mostest fun,

a listening to the witch tales that Annie tells about

and the goblins will get ya if ya don’t watch out!

Once there was a little boy who wouldn’t say his prayers,

and when he went to bed at night away up stairs,

his mammy heard him holler and his daddy heard him bawl,

and when they turned the covers down,

he wasn’t there at all!

They searched for him in the attic room

and cubby hole and press

and even up the chimney flu and every wheres, I guess,

but all they ever found of him was just his pants and round-abouts

and the goblins will get ya if ya don’t watch out!!

Once there was a little girl who always laughed and grinned

and made fun of everyone, of all her blood and kin,

and once when there was company and the old folks was there,

she mocked them and she shocked them and said, she didn’t care.

And just as she turned on her heels and to go and run and hide,

there was two great big black things a standing by her side.

They snatched her through the ceiling fore she knew what shes about,

and the goblins will get ya if ya don’t watch out!!

When the night is dark and scary,

and the moon is full and creatures are a flying and the wind goes Whoooooooooo,

you better mind your parents and your teachers fond and dear,

and cherish them that loves ya, and dry the orphans tears

and help the poor and needy ones that cluster all about,

or the goblins will get ya if ya don’t watch out!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do remember my grandpa reciting the second verse to us when we were kids.

To make sure we said our prayers before we went to bed.

Well, it's finally cool and crisp here in SE Georgia. Yesterday, it was gray and rained off and on all day. It is time to pull the jackets out and go out in the yard and kick some leaves. :wah: We don't have many fallen leaves yet, but we do have some.

This painting I found on the web is called "Sun Rays on a Cool October Day".
