I have had a lovely cultural week away.

Visited Dover Castle and the secret wartime tunnels. Upnor Castle, Rochester Castle, Deal Castle, Battle of Hastings Abbey and Battlefield , Canterbury Cathedral, Walmer Castle and Gardens and a few other places of interest.

We are all castled out, one hectic week with a lot of driving but worth it.

We have sat in the Queen Mothers Garden, bless her cotton socks and stood on the spot where Harold fell at the battle of Hastings, seen the chair that Wellington died in and much more.

The traffic was terrible, so much so we even stopped off for a night in a nice hotel in Winchester on the way home, a perfect finish to the week.

Nice to be home.:)

Will post a few pics later.

Nope, not Winchester.

How bizarre to see modern buildings built right alongside the old city wall entrance. Normally old buildings have a large space around them so you can admire the old stone masonry. Also, I would have thought building so close could cause damage and surely buildings this old would be listed buildings?

Through the gateway is a cathedral, very similar to Winchesters Cathedral, except Winchester doesn't have that gateway. Looking at your list Barman, I'd guess it's Canterbury Cathedral.

Do you know the difference between a church and a Cathedral?

A Cathedral houses a Cathedra, which is the Bishop's chair (although it looks more like a throne!) ;)

Okay, so I was right then. Just a slow typer. :o

In Winchester Cathedral you can get a children's guide which gives you loads of fun facts and fascinating things to look out for. It adds to the interest. I love Cathedrals and historic houses. Winchester and Salisbury also have houses with wattle-and-daub walls that you can see.

Me too abbey, some of the places just left us speechless, trying to imagine what sort of life they lived a thousand years ago, some of the conditions and to stand where they stood and look at their work, incredible.

Glad you had a great hol, Barman. Beautiful pics.

If you like that sort of thing, don't miss Salisbury Cathedral. It and the Close it stands in are absolutely beautiful.
