****, ***, ****, ****, and son of a ***** oh, and motherFOCer is questionable...

****, none of those are allowed? :wah:

Seriously, it has always been my understanding that as long as the censors asterisk it out, then it's not infractable. The trouble occurs when you guys put spaces or special characters in between letters... so that the foul word is viewed as if it were spelled out normally. Apparently, we need to confirm this for certain once again, however.

he's joking because when you do type out a really bad swear word, it automatically cuts it out...........

you know I have this kind of tree:

***** willow tree

see, it cut off p u s s y from the willow.

but it is strange because you can say pussycat?

and both are real words.

no, I've added an extra letter to still make a word known as to what i'm saying. Like in the S word, I'll put 2 i's in it. :wah:

I suppose this is a good question in the light of Tombstone's recast TOS. But I hope that Forum Gardeners will never equate incivility merely with the use of cusswords. A word is still just a collection of non random letters.

Sometimes the most viciously hurtful absolutely intentional incivility can be cloaked in words of pure honey, lexically and gramatically perfect, with not an asterisk in sight, and yet pure poison.

Pookles remains my favourite bad word.

This thread is about swear words / cusswords - and in this forum many are asterisked out...

In the light of the newly recast TOS, we are commanded to be civil.

I have been trying to make a point here that civility is complex and goes beyond using cusswords.

Consider these four sentences. Are any of them civil? Which is the least civil???

John is a moron

John is a **********g moron

It is simply amazing that John's mental processes are so free from complexity

Intelligence isn't everything, John is basically a nice person...

Disclaimers

I recast what I wrote into the third person, Snowfire, to make it abundantly clear that I was using what Odie wrote merely as an example.

What I wrote is not about Odie, nor is it about anyone in the forum who happens to be called John, if we have any such person. It's a common name.

Hey maybe I should use Pam.. that's my name.

Pam is *utt ******* ugly

Pam is just plain ugly

Pam is to supermodels what a dead slug is to cordon bleu cooking

It would be nice to be able to say that Pam is not just an ugly face

At which would I be more offended?

I think I'd probably have to seriously inconvenience the perpetrators of any of these. As follows:

Shove broomstick where the sun don't shine

Bludgeon with a blunt object

Slice and dice and serve to said supermodels smeared on a lettuce leaf

Wrap in bacon and give to Hoppy to toss in the gladiatorial arean

And when that's all done I shall possibly flounce all the way to my plastic surgeon, get a makeover .. and you'll all be soooo sorry..... flounce flounce flounce

No I got yer.

Swear words are an essential part of language and always have been . Sure many of them offend

Stephen Fry the actor, broadcaster, comedian, writer, is a very learned, educated man who's life revolves around the spoken word, not least English. He explained how the use of words that were offensive to some, were essential and commonplace to others. It isnt just the uneducated, ignorant navvy who uses the profanity and as you rightly point out, the connotation or intention behind a phrase is just as damning or offensive.

Some explicit words can be used to hammer a point home or even, believe it or not, as terms of friendship and closeness. Such words between friends are understood as such and perhaps wouldnt be used amongst strangers.

I hope my memory serves me correctly but I'm sure I heard Germaine Greer suggest once that the word "vagina" was a much more offensive word to her than the old middle English "c" word that one would think was. I think her logic was based around the original meaning of the word "vagina" - which meant a scabbard or sheath - connotations of male dominance
