sometimes we need these graphic images to show us exactly how people behave in our cities and why we need the law and government to stop it.

If you look carefully you can see the poor boy going blue. this man was killing him. and those behind the counter do nothing .

Yes these so called "bouncers" are in custody.

Police have released CCTV footage of a brutal attack in a Melbourne Hungry Jacks restaurant in which a promising young footballer was choked into unconsciousness and left for dead.

The shocking footage shows footballer Luke Adams choked in a headlock before passing out, smashing his head as he fell to the ground about 5.45am (AEST) on Monday at the Hungry Jack's restaurant on the corner of Chapel Street and Malvern Road, Prahran.

Mr Adams tried to intervene when one of his friends was accosted by three strangers but the three attackers then turned on him, punching and choking him into unconsciousness.

The sickening footage shows one of Mr Adams's friends trying to stem the blood pouring from his head as the savage assault continues around them.

The 19-year-old, from Frankston South, was taken to The Alfred hospital where he remains suffering from a serious brain injury.

Detective Senior Constable Scott D'Rozario says Mr Adams has a brain bleed, fractures behind his eye, facial fractures and severe forehead cuts.

Det Sen Const D'Rozario says the attack was unprovoked and Mr Adams did not retaliate.

His father Peter Adams said he was disturbed by the "callousness" of the attack.

"This appears to have been pre-meditated and there appears to be no concern for the people being injured because the assault continued," he told reporters on Wednesday.

But the footage, while extremely distressing, was reassuring, Mr Adams said.

"It's actually very reassuring to know the character we know of Luke is entirely consistent with the way he's acted," he said.

"He remembers most of it, up until the time he's unconscious."

Luke - who was due to play in the under-19 Victorian Australian Rules team on Sunday - had never shown aggression on field during his junior football career, Mr Adams said.

"I think the footage shows, very like the way he plays football, he's been attacked, he's concentrating on helping his friend and hasn't retaliated, and then he's been immobilised by this headlock. That's meant he hasn't had a chance to defend himself."

Police said patrolling officers spoke to the the trio involved in the attack before they fled north along Chapel Street. All were aged between 20 and 30.

Truly awful footage. Violence is never the answer.

Did alcohol play a part? or was it just lack of control and totally disregard for another human being?

Alcohol has been playing a part in Melbourne violence for a few years now . but it turned out that these thugs were just thugs "nightclub bouncers and heavies " who decided to pick on a couple of kids who could have been a little intoxicated. Soft target stuff.

I'd be interested to see where the "decided to pick on a couple of kids who could have been a little intoxicated" originated.

I note that the three men handed themselves over to the police last week and that Luke Adams was discharged from hospital a week ago.

Yes spot you're kind of right . Police and government are asking the public to become vigilant in keeping our streets safe. We still dont know what that exactly entails . They are asking for a cultural change. Thing is, our culture didn't have 4am finishing times at night clubs forcfully spilling drunks out into the streets . I'm not sure I think they are asking to go back to the old times. ....it's got everyone stumped.

Melbourne has been in the international news lately because of the violence in the inner city ............police say "due to alcohol" . there's been attacks on international students that some say are racially motivated but it doesn't really add up because there's just as many assaults on others in the city.

It has gotten pretty bad. Luke was actually one of many.,

they handed themselves over because they were already identifiable.

Obviously couldn't get a plane out of the country in time, which is another thing going on here . people up on serious offences are being extradited back into the country because mummy and daddy don't want them going to prison. Well tell your kids not to take machettis to people then
