Yep, and no, I wasn't that doped up.
0046 a thing came across the skies ....(no i dont' believe in aliens) Anyway it wasn't an asteroid becuase it didn't have a tail and we are near an airforce base so I was listening for the reverberations of a jet engine......but nothing. And it was way tooo low for a shooting star.
You know what I thought about? I thought that someone was about to be blown up. I'd dismissed any aircraft at this point because I see so many of them there were no flashing lights. It took a second to cross the sky and it was extremely bright and resembled an aircraft.
OH i don't know,........ nothing was blown up and no reports of asteroids .
*SHRUGS*

I was on the way out very early the other morning ....about 5,30am and living in the countryside there are loads of bushes and trees and as I was driving along I saw a big red glow behind the trees...I thought OMG quick get the camera out ET has come back:rolleyes: anyway I drove abit further and could still see the Red glow behind those trees and I found a place to stop.Do I ring anyone and tell them I may be captured and taken away to another planet.....na its abit early and also I didnt want to excite people to much saying that:rolleyes: so I got out the car to investigate............................how the hell did I know it was the flipping Sun that I had never seen red before fgs:-5:-5

I've never been able to look one in the eye since and avoid them at all costs. Infact, the Ministry of Defence just doesn't take flying umbrella's seriousley enough.

That must have been awful, Oscar. In extreme conditions, they've been known to expand and poke your eyes out.

It was a long light about (from the ground) three cms in length (that's quite long)It took between one to two seconds to cross the sky line. It was low like a helicopter not high like the jumbos we get crossing the sky line from New Zealand to Melbourne. It had no flashing white or red lights. I live near an airforce base but when a jet passes over you usually wait for the engine noise which usually follows but there was none . Because it travelled so fast that's what I thought it was at first. I see comets and shooting stars and satilites all the time, and I know what they look like and it wasn't anything like that. If it was a comet then it was way too close to the earth,, and it didn't have a tail . I'm talking about something within our earths atmosphere ...very low.
It's wierd someoneelse must have seen it it was 4:36 in the morning, milkers and farmers are out at that time.

Whereabouts in the sky did you see it? Could you determine by its trajectory where it may have come from or to? I'm assuming you had an unobstructed view of the entire sky.

Low or high in the sky, that is, towards the horizon or towards being above you?

across so low I expect. It looked like it was travelling toward another town. I'd say 3000 to 4000 feet?

I'm trying to get a clear picture of it in my mind's eye. Your description of it only seems to suggest a meteor burning through the atmosphere in the style of a shooting star. If it was low, it could have been quite far away from you towards the horizon where both the Earth and the atmosphere is curving down. That may give the appearance of it being lower in the atmosphere if you take distortion due to atmospherics into account. Small meteors just appear as white lines as soon as they hit the atmosphere and begin burning up, sometimes burning up completely before being able to leave the atmosphere.
I'm not trying to refute you if you firmly believe that it was something man made. It's just very difficult for me to get a picture of anything else in my mind's eye.

I love watching a good meteor shower in the clear night sky. I also love it when there's a dry electric storm between the clouds. If it's not too cold or wet, I will lie down on the lawn and allow myself to be entertained by them.

Yeh. When it's just between the clouds, it's quite safe. The patterns are quite entrancing.

I love looking at the sky for strange and unusual things. I especially love all the info that spaceweather.com sends me about what's happening in the sky above me.
If it's going to be a great meteor shower, I'll drive up to the beach at 4 AM with a big mug of coffee and in my jammies and watch the event with the local fishermen:)
