Im shattered

Post by Victoria »

From about 11.30 last night until 7am this morning we have had thunder and lightning with heavy rainfall..

I dont care nor do the older two of my dogs Oscar and Benny.

But poor Remy is terrified.

With every clap of thunder he jumps and trembles with every flash of lightning he cowers in fright.

So I put him to bed with his blanket over his head and settled down but with the next clap of thunder I had him standing on my chest staring into my face with the biggest eyes and most terrifed look on his face.

I told him stop that its nothing and put him back to bed, two seconds after getting back into to bed another clap of thunder and there he was again this time sitting on my pillow!

I repeated this several times but the fact is he is scared always has been and its not getting any better.

I dont make a fuss I dont give him any extra treats or anything when it thunders and the other dogs ignore him but he just cant seem to get over his fears. All load noises have this effect on him.

However the net result is Im shattered and have to go to work soon while he is now curled up on the chair snoring...

Ahhhhh, the poor dog Victoria...Get some rest when you come home:-6

I once heard a dog trainer say to make a tape of loud thunder, and play it for a short time each day. He said that the dog will get used to the sound after awhile....might work.

With Remy being brain damaged, he will be more frightened than other dogs i would imagine. I'm very lucky that all my three dogs came as tiny pups and we have conditioned them to ignore storms and fireworks but i have had rescue dogs in the past that were terrified. You are doing the right thing in lots of cuddles nad re-assurence. To be honest, i don't know what else to suggest. The idea of the tape of thunder i think is a brilliant idea.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. R.L. Binyon

My dog is the same way. I tried the thunderstorm thing. Dog almost had a heart attack everytime I played it. I do hope it works for your little dog Victoria.

omg......poor baby.

Now with Remy having brain damage, he may not get used to it.

You can try looking up Caesar Romano's site for help, 'The Dog Whisperer', he has lots of different examples of how to train dogs in all kinds of different situations.

You can also email him with your problems.

I can suggest that you start making a loud noise everyday, 2 times a day........and sit with him.....he will be frightened....but you must remain completely calm.......and talk to Remy really nicely and quietly........this may take several times.......and slowly move the noise up to 3 -4 times a day, only when he gets used to it and sees no harm will come to him.

hope this helps you both get some sleep.:-4

Thanks for the advise everyone, Remy is still scared of loads of things including us at times, a wrong movement or word and he freezes shrinking away from our touch. He is terrified of feet getting to close to him, loud noises, whistles, dog clicker, anything new basically .

He prefers me to talk to him part words part grunt sorry cant describe it but it makes him relaxed and happy so I dont mind looking like a complete fool.

We tend to introduce things via the other dogs, he trusts their judgement so I show something to the other dogs and if they are happy to sniff or play with it and he will then dare to come take a look, it works most of the time.

July will be three years since he came to us so we have loads of time yet. Im sure he will continue to make progress I just have to accept that everything is at his pace.

After having a Border Collie (Oscar) Remy pace is like slow motion...
