Michael Martin 'to stand down' as Speaker - UK Politics, UK - The Independent

What a big surprise Michael Martin 'to stand down' as Speaker, let's hope gordon brown goes as well.

John Rentoul - What the Prime Minister meant

"What we have seen," said Gordon Brown today of the MPs' expenses, "has angered and appalled me."

That is why, he did not go on to say, I spent £2m of public money in a legal action to try to block publication.

(NB. Yes that legal action was undertaken by the House of Commons Commission, which consists of Michael Martin, the Speaker, Harriet Harman, a Cabinet minister, and others; do we think it would have proceeded without the Prime Minister's say-so?)

The kindest thing you can say about gordon brown is that is is a moron as opposed to the lying two faced hypocritical self seeking bastard he appears to be.

Oi! I saw that. A bit more respect please.

I'm baffled by this new House of Commons habit that's growing of bursting into spontaneous applause after emotional moments, it's as bad as clapping funeral cortèges. The British aren't what they were. Where did the stiff upper lip go?

Well no one else is going to applaud the buggers. Maybe the ones claping think they are off the hook. I'm sure most of them still don't understand why what they were ding is wrong and why people are so angry.

It's a shame that the only way we got to find out about this is chequebook journalism there are quite clearly cases of outright fraud.

Isn't there a rumble in the jungle that some of them may face fraud charges now? Especially the one who claimed for a mortgage that he's already paid off?

If there isn't a fraud charge on that one then it makes a mockery of our justice system. Ordinary punters accused of fraud by the tax man get little mercy.
