Hey does anyone here make their own candles? I've got a book on how to do it, but I never have and would really love to learn.

Never melt wax over an open flame, never leave melting wax unattended, it catch's on fire.

I make candles with soy. I have never made gel candles, though I've seen a few kits that look fairly simple. I never use paraffin since it is harmful to our health. Essential oils are great to use in candles for a long lasting scent!

When I do the rolled candles it only takes about 15-30 minutes start to finish (including clean up - using beeswax sheets). I haven't tried dipping.

Candles in a container take me about 1-1.5 hours. I use a double-boiler.

I'm a slow poke... it takes me 2 hours to make my own soap too! :(

Do you sell them? I was tossing around the idea of having my own little craft shop.

No, I don't sell them. I've considered selling my soap but its so tricky (liability, etc..) I would think selling candles shouldn't be as complicated though, you should go for it! You could start up a website first and see what response you get and then open a store or something! Candles are so popular now so you should have no trouble selling. I see people selling candles at craft shows and at the fair, everyone loves it ;)

I make my own parafin candles. I collect juice cans, Pringles cans etc and use them as my molds. BTS makes some awesome gel candles. The first time we met he brought me some and I couldn't get him off my mind or out of my heart after that. I'll try to get him to respond to this thread - he's very good at it.

That would be great! I just think it's something I would be good at. I am a candle and incense lover anyway. Not to mention I think it would be economically viable as well if oil prices and fuel shortages keep up.

Raven, what scents do you think are best - wax scents or liquid? (if your using artificial scents and not essential oils)!

I love both! My favorite candle was a bergamot and nettle scent. But my favorite incense is nag champa.
