There are many topics that are posted in the Current Events or General Chit Chat that are regional in nature and only of real interest or concern to those residing in a particular area. I don't think anyone in the UK would be interested in the divorce proceedings of our local Police Chief. On the other hand, folks in the UK might be interested in our local eight legged cat that weighs 80 lbs. I think we could attract more members if we started using the Regional Discussion section so that a NEWBIE did not get the idea that there were only UK, American etc. membership, which they could very well interpret by scanning just a few of the posts.

Hi there Lon, sorry but I don't agree. Firstly I think we're a global forum so if you segregated us all into regions we'd only talk with those in our own physical neighbourhood and not get the wide variety of response to our posts that we get right now.
Secondly, even though we're globally distant we often find we have things in common whichever country, county or state we're in. So someone posting a recipe for a cheese sandwich, say, might say Um I had a delicious cheese and ham sandwich last night. On a regional forum they might get a response saying Oh thats nice or Why not try cheese and pickle instead. On a wider forum you get many more answers which might discuss cheeses you've never heard of or recommending you try something unusual or bizarre or delightful. Then the discussion could go into the various breads you might use. Then someone will say their auntie bakes her own bread and so the conversation weaves its way onto bread and breadmakers and ovens and old-fashioned ways of cooking and pioneering spirit and then finding your great great great grandfather came from Ireland and lived half a mile down the road from someone else's great great great grandmother and even took her to a dance once!
Thirdly, I think newbies enjoy the wide variety of posts and posters. They always seem pleased to find huge welcoming threads and you get to know people by their personalities not by where they come from. Don't forget we also have some Aussies here and Victoria from the Netherlands and then there's that chap Lon who sometimes lives in New Zealand!
Lastly, why is your local Police Chief getting divorced? Was it another woman? :sneaky:
And tell me more about your local eight legged cat that weighs 80 lbs. :-3

good afternoon and welcome along to the grumps column
this story is beyond human reasoning read this only if it will not upset you
EIGHT paedophile monsters were facing years behind bars last night after being convicted of sickening child porn and abuse crimes.
Victims of the fiends — who were snared by their vile net chats — included a three-month-old tot and a toddler, who had to undergo sex disease tests.
Cops now hope their probe into the depraved network could help smash a massive international paedo ring.
One senior detective said: “Until you start to dig in this cesspit, you can have no idea of the depths of depravity out there. But just as shocking is how widespread it is.
Two of the eight men — convicted sex offender Neil Strachan and gay rights campaigner James Rennie — were found guilty of abusing kids.
HIV positive Strachan, 41, and Rennie, 38, both from Edinburgh, were also convicted of conspiring to abuse youngsters, along with three other members of the gang.
All of the evil network accused in the 10-week trial were convicted of a string of child porn offences.
Last night the shattered families of the abused children spoke of their revulsion at the gang.
The mum of the 18-month-old toddler said in a statement: “The anguish I feel towards Mr Strachan is indescribable.
And the family of the baby targeted by Rennie added: “We have had to learn to live, and cope with, the effect these horrific events have had.
Police have already identified men throughout Britain with links to the gang.
The senior cop added: “This one case involving just eight men in the dock has caused investigators to access links to literally hundreds of other apparently like-minded individuals.
“The tentacles are spread out all over the UK and even to a potentially massive network in Europe.
“This case is likely to be a landmark in more ways than one.
All the offences were committed in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and East Lothian during various periods from February 2004 to May 2008.
A jury took ten hours to reach decisions on a total of 54 charges.
Judge Lord Bannatyne called for background reports at the High Court in Edinburgh before sentencing at a later date.
Det Supt Allan Jones, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: “As the investigation unfolded it revealed a web of people who had a common interest in child sexual abuse.

Ok, well this first post is actually written by Raven who, whilst living in Britain, is actually American.

The EIGHT paedophile monsters story is, I think, of interest to everyone, but especially mothers. I lived in London for 10 years and cannot tell you how many terrible stories I heard about babies or youngsters being hurt or taken. We had murders on our street. My own son was nearly kidnapped as a toddler. I turned around in the nick of time to see a young Asian couple, each holding him by the hand and about to walk off with him. I grabbed him back quickly but was too shocked to even say anything to them. They just melted into the crowd and disappeared. Having moved down here I found that people thought we worried too much about our kids and their safety because they didn't see the dangers we saw. I think stories like this make people more aware and alert to the possibilities of what might happen. Also, Peg posts Amber Alert stories. Amber Alert only happens in the US, but that doesn't stop me from being interested or shocked and I always read the stories. I doubt any of those children would ever appear in my part of the UK and if they did I probably wouldn't recognise them, but again, it doesn't stop me reading the thread or being interested.
There are a lot of stories lately about UK politics and UK football. Personally I'd rather watch paint dry than watch football and I'd rather spell words beginning with O than discuss politics, but other members enjoy those discussions and its their choice to take part in them. I tend to avoid those threads in general. :wah:
On the main board at the moment there are posts by Coberst about the American educational system, Odie talks about a Canadian festival, Peg has told us about her grandson and about an Amber Alert in Texas, and Red Glitter talks about National Park Service officials taking land for a memorial. There's even you there talking about Pavlova (which you shouldn't really discuss as it's not regional to you.
:wah: )
Personally I think Coberst has some interesting points, I was happy to read about Odies festival and celebrated the joy of Pegs grandson. I was saddened about the Amber Alert and thoughtful about RG's memorial. Some posts make me happy, some sad, but they all open up to me a world I would not know if it wasn't for FG.
I can read about Forest Fires but have never experienced one. Or a tornado. Or a hurricane. And reading about it in the newspaper doesn't bring it as alive as someone here worrying for friends or relatives and telling you the stories that make these events human.
I used to think Americans were a strange race of people, on TV they always seemed so friendly and polite and they had strange customs and weird traffic lights. They always appear to have bouffant hairstyles and bright white teeth. I loved the way American high schools looked and those poodle skirts and bobbysox and diners with jukeboxes. It was only coming to FG that I realised how normal Americans are :yh_rotfl and not the way I think they're portrayed.
I'm not saying your suggestions are wrong, just that I feel everyone has a right to share in everyone's news. I enjoy hearing other peoples news (I have no life so I have to live vicariously
)
Perhaps the problem is that you feel bored by all the banal posts and want something more interesting. The problem, I think, is that you have lived a wonderful and blessed existence for so long that you forget that most people do live humdrum lives. I personally pay a high rent, bills and taxes and have very little money left over. Our idea of fun is buying a pizza or going to the new cinema which just opened in our town. (We've been twice). You live in a wonderful community, you play golf every day or swim or play sports and you live abroad for 6 months of the year. I have to weigh up the cost before I can do something with the kids, so I get my enjoyment by talking to people about the little things which affect all our lives. You obviously don't need to worry about the cost of things, you live well, you eat healthily. We eat what we can afford.
I don't want you to think I'm saying you should leave FG, God forbid, but maybe you should peruse other forums besides this one. Maybe other forums would be for wealthy people who live in gated communities and want to know how to invest their tax dollars. Just read what interests you here and then read what interests you there. I enjoy your posts and enjoy hearing about your delicious meals and your sun-filled fun-filled days, but thats not how most of us live, I think and so we discuss the little things, the local news, the stuff we enjoy and yes, for me that includes all the local colour in peoples lives.
Sorry to have droned on for so long.

I'm actually very happy with my life Thankyou. :p
This was not meant as a personal critique, I just thought you seemed bored with many of the threads and I suggested that you might find other forums more interesting to you personally. I did say I wasn't criticising you and even paid you a compliment. I notice you didn't return it, even though politeness dictates that you should. :sneaky:
Your original post post suggested segregation of the topics and YOU ASKED What do you think?
I simply told you what I thought. I won't bother wasting my time next time! :p

I think we could attract more members if we started using the Regional Discussion section so that a NEWBIE did not get the idea that there were only UK, American etc. membership, which they could very well interpret by scanning just a few of the posts.
