I've heard mention of "Sales Tax" in the 'States. What is that? How does it work?
Sales tax?
I don't know about the states.. but here in Ontario Canada we pay 8% provincial sales tax + 7 % government sales tax on everything.

But how does it work? Do you go into a shop, and when the bill is totted up pay an extra 8% + another 7% of the total at the till, or what? Do prices show the amount to pay inclusive?

The prices never include tax.. it is always + tax which is added at the register (ie) 10.00 would be 11.50.
The only things exempt are childrens clothes and shoes, some food items, not too many things exempt!

Sales tax?
yep.. that is pretty much how it works. Sales tax rates are usually determined by the state and is a precentage of the total sale added on at the end. Some items are non-taxable usually things like cleaning supplies and such... Then of course you can add on a rooms and meals tax at hotels or restaurants.. on top of the sales tax.. and the list can go on and on....

Hmm we pay sales tax on cleaning supplies here, only thing without the tax
is food items at the grocery store.
There can be all kinds of stuff added on to tax which makes it difficult
(at least for math-challenged yours truly!) to figure out what it will be.
Here in the Bay Area, counties served by the Rapid Transit system have
added a sales tax of 1/2%. For large-ticket items like cars, you can save
an awful lot of money by buying out of the area.
I wish they WOULD figure it out beforehand, so that the price on an
item was what you were really going to pay. But I spose someone
would scream about graft or something!!

here in the US, _most_ foods are exempt. wife and i just got back from our weekly grocery shopping - total was $99.92, and tax was $1.06. it appears only about $14 of the bill was taxable items.

Sales Tax in Connecticut USA, is currently 6% on the Items that others have listed, for the State to collect to help finance necessary State services. But in "addition" to Sales Tax, we have to pay a "Property Tax" on any thing that has to be registered. Cars, Boats, Trailers, Air Planes. Which can be very expensive, as the tax (% rate varies per the town in the State) is levied on the value of the actual item. So on a $25,000 Car you pay 6% Sales tax once, but then you could pay as much as $2,000 "annually" for the "property tax"! That tax is to help the State pay for Childrens Schools & Teachers. In "addition" to those Taxes, about 10 years ago, the rotton governer at that time declaired a 4-1/2 % "Income Tax" to help with the States expenses! That takes quite a healthy chunk out of one's paycheck! Of course, there is also the Real-Estate Proprety Tax on Houses, that again varies by the Town in the State. Minimum on Average size house could be $5,500 annually! Tax,Tax, Tax, it stinks!!!

Oregon does not have sales tax. However, we do have a high income tax (9%) and we are just starting to have a county tax (mine is 1.25%).
Of course, Oregon is kind of a renegade state. LOL. Most of the states do have a sales tax.

Here in New Zealand there is a 12 1/2 % GST (Goods & Service Tax) on everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. On top of that there is Income Tax as well

Saw a preview of Mr Bush's proposed FAIR tax last night, the essence is scrap income tax and have one high uniform tax on purchases !!!!!

tankspring- I did not get to mention that is the same situation as is here in Connecticut USA. As I already went on too long with the post, & left that out!
