How safe is your bank account?

Typical Monday morning ... Or is it?

I was sitting at my desk this morning, up to my eyes in spreadsheets when I get a call from the fraud dept. of my bank.

"We're calling because we've noticed some very irregular transactions on you're bank account today and we feel it necessary to put an immediate block on your account."

After picking my jaw up off the floor and going through the necessary security checks, it turns out that someone has used my card over the weekend for several transactions which comes to the rather hefty sum of £2500.00!

So what happens now? The bank have increased my overdraft to cover this amount because the transactions are ALL pending and I have to fill in the paper work to claim it all back!

In the mean time, I'm left with no access to funds until my new card arrives.

Oh well, it's off to the bank of Mum and Dad for a few days.

Nice Monday morning huh?

Thats awful. I know just what a shock it can give.

Some scrote bag drip fed his online gambling from my bank account a few years back. I didnt see any of his winnings mind

The banks fraud squad refunded just about all the money except for what had extended past a time limit.

I keep a closer watch on things now and the only person that I'm worried about cleaning me out is my loverly "She who must be obeyed "

I'm hearing this more and more lately. Its not just internet activity either, petrol stations, restaurants ect..

Friend of mine recently had his Ebay account hacked, first they changed his password, then his email address then they took over the whole account. Until this happened Ebay didnt used to inform users when their password was changed but they do now.

Hope it all gets sorted soon PC and its not too much of an inconvenience:-4

Abbey that's the problem! My card has been in my purse all weekend! I cut it up this morning while I was in with the bank!

Rosie, I'm so sorry you've had this happen. It is very worrying. You'll probably be asked to prove you weren't anywhere near where the card was used, etc. It may take a while, but I hope not. There are a lot of people (?) who are treating this sort of thing like a business, and a lot of them are getting very rich off other people's hard work and honesty. Leeches,

Hope you don't have to wait long for your replacement, Rosie.

It's good that your bank picked this up and acted on it. They don't always do that from what I've heard of other people this has happened to.

Did you inform them you associate with shady characters (FG) ?

It's happened to me 3X with my instacard........

We have a daily limit of a 500.00 withdrawal, perhaps you should lower yours if it was your instacard.

Now, when using it, I cover my hand around the machine when punching in of any numbers.

I know this sucks, and its a shock to hear them call you and say that..but I also give my bank credit for noticing unusual transactions....if they didn't........any transactions will be aloud.

They have to give you your money back........mine took almost 3 weeks, good luck and I hear you!:-5:-5

I have not been inside a brick and mortar bank since 1999. My only bank is online and I do all of my banking with it. Have never had a problem of any kind.

Aww Chicky! I'm so sorry this happened to you. I had a similar event happen over the summer and it was very upsetting! I am glad it will get sorted but so sorry that you had to go through that!:mad:

If I can make a suggestion.

When using your debit/credit card in a shop, never pass it to the sales assistant. Always put you card in the machine yourself. Always refuse to hand over your card. If they insist on handling your card, be suspicious and use another store

A fraudster needs a few things to use your card/ account sccessfully.

1. Your name (which is on the card )

2. Your card number (which obviously is on the card)

3. The security number (which is the last 3 numbers on the revers of a card.

Obviously these details are slightly different for different cards.

These can be gained if you pass over your card. It could be swipped under the counter, or surreptitiously "dropped" to obtain the details.

Once they have them it is easy to use those details, online or on the telephone.

In my case to fund someones gambling habit (and a bad one at that)

while Christmas shopping in one store for almost 2 hours..get up to the cashier, ring through everything.......only for the machine to say account closed?

I didn't have my credit card on me nor cash.....so left everything there in a huge huff!

phoned the bank.......yup again, 2 suspicious withdrawals over the weekend of 500.00!:-5:-5:-5

Then had to wait again for the card to come in the mail!:-5:-5

We are taking traveler's checks from American Express too and of course the ATM card. Would like to get a prez for a friend who is moving into a new house in the summer...a wall plaque of some sort.
