I know there isn't a huge difference between a 4 and 5 but there is a difference, so, that's a plus.

I'm watching these guys on TV. They're crazy. Some of them are right smack in the middle of the city.

All good thoughts going their way. From what I understand the power to the pumping system is down and they are just NOW trying to set up emergency generators. WTF. Now THAT is REALLY stupid..to have not had that in place already. Shameful.

CNN reports about 50 people, WHO HAVE THEIR CHILDREN WITH THEM, are pillaging at least one grocery store. i am waiting to see if police or national guard intervene. we have a shoot to kill policy in florida, ever since looters in people's homes in miami after andrew.

I have just had an e-mail from my niece who lives on the mardi Gras route in New Orleans.

They evacuated to Florida and are safe with freinds.....Mum, Dad, 3 little boys and dog. I am so relieved....don't know what will face them when they return home though. Most important thing is that the family are safe. nearly everything else can be replaced/rebuilt.

I am a Christian, practising Buddhism ....crazy eh ? If there is a God i doubt he has anything to do with these natural disasters. I don't think they are a 'test' or a 'punishment'...they just happen and have done for billions of years. Long before us humans inhabited the earth. A contoversial subject...maybe not for this thread.

Warm wishes to everyone...it's great that FG has so many caring lovely members.....Bez

It's the first to hit N.O. since 1962, I think.

I really despair of the human race !!

I am watching FOX NEWS and the presenter is telling us that people are charging double for hotel rooms, gas, provisions, sevices etc. This happened in London after the bombings. People who couldn't get home because of the rail network shutdown were being charged extortionate prices for hotel rooms. Whatever happened to humanity...it makes my blood boil

sorry, i had to out...quick replies----i don't think the superdome is being evacuated. new orleans hasn't had a direct hit since 1965, although ivan flooded it somewhat last year. this is 11th storm of this year, if that what was asked.(see post 10) and price-gouging in the face of disaster is illegal and has severe penalties. i need to catch up with the reports...last post i made was that there was looting, that is not going to be tolerated! ...the good news is it has been reduced to a cat 1, but there will still be serious damages. ...Bez i am happy to hear your family is safe!! :)

Hey Bez,

How much is gas per liter in euros there? Ive been out of the country before but have never driven or didnt pay attention. Im just curious.

I heard gas will go up 25-50 cents in the next 10 days.

My cousin's house is completely under water, she lived on Lake Ponchartrain. I asked her to move in with me in Washington DC and she is seriously considering it after the last 3 years in New Orleans. She has been safe in Memphis, TN since last Friday.

From our co-worker who resides in Louisanna: The cost of the damage so far todate is estimated at 60 billion. The military says the looting is so bad they have brought in Marshall law. Another grim report, the military has ordered 20,000 body bags. Sorry this is all grim news, the other horrible problem now is the alligators and poisonous snakes all over the place and the water is tainted with fuel, and sewage. News reporters stated they won't even stand in the water anymore. Outlying cities like Broussard are taking in "refugees" by the thousands. Reports also say some of the "refugee" children will start school in the areas they are brought to as it could be up to 3 months before these kids can go back to their home, or areas where home was.

The city's closed now. Everybody is being evacuated. all the looting was for naught, I hope.
