This is the issue at hand, the main reason. This mans religion is in the right perspective, (from my view of course) that its personal between man and God and not between man through culture or orginized religion to God (or in this particular case allah).

The ideals for freedom and liberty, release a man from authoritarian bonds and give him hope to think for himself and question his relationships and choose where to align his personal allegiances, be it through an authority or through a religion or both.

We don't see the islamic people join other groups very often because Islam does not allow free choice of expression or to question its leadership or hierarchy. But there are many other religions and cultures that do the same.

Lest we think a base in freedom and liberty is much different, I see the opposing side of the spectrum in the USA, we are tossed by every wind in so many directions we cant decide for ourselves which way to drive the ship. Im intimiatly desireable of freedom over tyrannical religion, but where is the balance?

You could levy the same accusation as some christian sects and their followers that tell their followers how to vote and followers who do as they are told and swallow everything without question. They turn out to protest outside theatres where plays they consider blasphemous are being performed It was one of the main reasons for the religious wars in europe-who rules the pope in rome or the king. Whose laws held precedence-the laws of god (as interpreted by the priests) or the laws of man. If the law says all are equal before it but your religion tells you that some are not worthy and it's ok to discriminate or that women should have no rights which has the greater authority.

As to how you find a balance I think it's something you need to keep talking about. We seem to be allowing a culture where you are not supposed to insult a religion that extends to almost not being allowed to call it a load of bunkum yet we are supposed to tolerate religious groups trying to impose their own views on education etc etc. ( in broad general terms and remember I am not an american so don't assume I'm referring to the states I can't claim claim to know what is going on there)

This caused outrage amongst some when it first came out. It's wickedly hilarious if you're scots as it's set against a background of religious bigotry and gang warfare that pervades our culture. (hence the laughter at reference to what are catholic pubs and the like and the christians and romans as glasgow gangs) maybe when someone does something similar about Mohamed or shia and sunni and doesn't get lynched we can claim progress.
