numpty..

I see the brits using it but had never seen or heard it before. So I looked it up............

What a hoot the meaning is:

BBC NEWS | Scotland | 'Numpty' voted nation's best word

numpty..

Scottish usage:

a) Someone who (sometimes unwittingly) by speech or action demonstrates a lack of knowledge or misconception of a particular subject or situation to the amusement of others

b) A good humoured admonition, a term of endearment

c) A reckless, absent minded or unwise person

a) "No. That wisnae wit she meant, ya big numpty!"

b) i.e. "Silly billy", "You big dafty"

c) "That numpty's driving with no lights on!"

A person who never has or never will have a f*ing clue what he is doing

"Awww Jimmy you ****************ing numpty!! You couldnae score wi' ma' sister!"

Dialect, chiefly scots. A bumbling fool or one who is intellectually challanged.

(plural : numpties)

"they numpties couldnae organise a pissup in a brewery."

In reference to MSPs( members of scottish parliment)

An idiot or fool. Often used to chastise someone

You numpty! You were meant to put the lid on first!

In the kitchen, a 'numpty' refers to the person or persons who :

a) Leave empty boxes in fridges and storage areas

b) thaw chicken stock in hot water

c) use 9 different containers for the same product

d) dont have a clue of wtf is going on around them

"That new kid is a right numpty"

"have you seen the numpty who left this empty box in the freezer?"

Someone who confidently asserts themselves towards a false truth in the presence of others. Even when the rest of the people there know that they are completely wrong.

Given the choice of a shovel or a ladder to get out of a hole, they have dug themselves, a numpty would confidently choose the shovel!

Well, the English use Wazzock in much the same way. :o The only ones I can think of are all a bit...rude or unpleasant.

Goolie (or Ghoolie) As in "I don't believe it! That Welsh Rugby fan cut off his own goolies!" (He really did!)

icNorthWales - Rugby fan cuts off own testicles
The crowd: "Yes! We are all individuals!"

Lone voice: "I'm not."

:wah:

I'm not sure. The "totum" bit sounds rather more erectable....

Heard them called Georg, Freidrich and Handel before now...

How long before this thread gets pulled?

(Oh no! It's getting worse!)

Hey, BTS, why don't you just rechristian this thread, "Random British Swearing" and leave it here as a place for people to go and let off steam, using only British swearwords. None of you Americans could possibly last five minutes without collapsing into helpless giggles.

Hmm. I don't think this is quite what Kathy Ellen had in mind when she suggested cheering the place up, but I think I'll go and create the thread.:)

re the thread: I thought I'd get a second opinion on whether it might be a bit edgy for a forum with kids. Suspect that's the end of it. Ah well.:wah:

A few authentic Scottish words :-

glaikit - ADJ. Stupid, foolish, thoughtless, vacant. As in "Awa, yi glaikit bastirt!" Often used of gadgies, minkers and schemies.

nyaff - Annoying wee bugger, especially applicable to a politician.

See you ya wee nyaff if ye dinnae bugger aff yer gettin' a bash in yer moosh

Plamph - (N) One who takes part in the, odd, practice of wearing someone elses undergarments ,on their head, and giving the gusset a damn good sniff.

shilpit – thin, weedy,

melt – ones facial feature

Bowfin - Adjective: Smelly, dirty like mingin with the emphasis on the smelly.

Sair forfochen - completely and utterly exhausted.

moosh - mouth

Ned - a Ned is what the English call a CHAV
An ye harm none, do what ye will....

we say Numpty here but usually only for children.

In terms of using it towards an adult, the equivalent here would be "Nuffy" or "nuff nuff" :)
