American Idol: Inflated Self-Assessments

Post by Tombstone »

I find one of the most striking aspects of watching American Idol is the inability of the vast majority of contestants to recognize their incredible deficits in the area of talent. That is, they can't sing!

What particularly interests me is how these poor individuals came to have such a distorted image of their own ability.

What are your thoughts on this?

The new season hasn't started yet - but it's highly entertaining to watch the tryouts. Very entertaining.

I think some of them just want the chance to meet the judges. But, alas, there are the poor folk who don't even try karoake before going for their big chance. Then again, if they are bad enough they could become famous anyway.

These people become famous just by going on this programme. It was called "Pop Idol" over here - if it was exported to you, then I'm profoundly sorry, and apologise unreservedly.
