FSA warned HBOS of risks in 2002
FSA warned HBOS of risks in 2002 - 12 February 2009
Which does beg the question of why did they not do something. You would think after equitable life they would be a bit more pro-active.
Brown that well known financial expert/moron what does he do? He appoints the man that caused HBOS to fail to run the FSA. You couldn't make this stuff up could you?
Meanwhile the govt hopes all the equitable life policyholders are dead so they don't have to compensate them as well.

If our MP's had a bit of backbone we could get rid of him tomorrow. All it takes is a vote in the house or a challenge to his leadership of the labour party.
Talking Politics - Yahoo! News UK
This means the FSA's failures, not the City's avarice, are now the centre of attention. As Sir James' case so effectively highlights, the FSA was too friendly with the banking attitudes to prevent the calamity from moving forward.
This is bad news for Gordon Brown.
He was the man who decided to create the tripartite regulatory structure in 1997, establishing the FSA as the body responsible for ensuring the banks behaved themselves.
He was the man who oversaw the boom which led to the bust in his decade in No 11.
And he is now the man trying to avoid this past from damaging his already shaky prospects at the next general election. It doesn't look good.
There is little doubt this is a global crisis just as there is little doubt that it could have been avoided just as there is little doubt gordon brown is responsible for making things worse in the UK. The man is a complete and utter tosser. Just been watching him in front of the parliamentary committee (O.K. i was skiving work) what an smug arrogant prig

I agree with you. Frankly I think he has bit off more than he can chew. He just doesnt have what it takes to be prime minister of Great Britain. But who in Parliament today does?

If raven will pardon me jumping in here.-can't resist the opportunity
let's see he joined in the lies about iraq and WMD's abd stayed with them even after it became clear to even the most stupid person Tony altered intelligence reports. Stayed in there all the way so he could get his reward and become Prime minister.
He completely ****ed up what was one of the best final salary company pension schemes systems in the world and raided everybody's private and company pension funds to the tune of 5 billion a year just so he could look good and not increase taxes. He did raise taxes for small and medium businesses so he could give tax breaks to all his mates in the big companies. He turned a blind eye to wholesale tax avoidance on the part of large corporations. He allowed the labour party to accept massive donations in return for peerages-unless you are naive enough to kid yourself he didn't know what was happening. Now he's busy bailing out all his mates in the banking industry instead of holding them accountable for being such a bunch of tosspots. No doubt jhe has a nice consultancy lined up for when he loses his seat.
Forget the long posts. Can you think of anything-anything at all-that Gordon Brown has done right?
personally I think I am being very charitable calling him a moron. kind of implies it wasn't his fault cos he's a half wit.

No, i won't go into a long post defending him. I could list all the achievements under his government but you don't want a long post.
So, what is the alternative as i have asked many times before? Tory Tosser Cameron? Nick Who Clegg? The SNP? There is no alternative. The SNP even managed to **** their budget up.
The truth is, who-ever gets in will **** up some-thing. I just happen to think the good outweighs the bad under Brown.

Off the top of my head:
Withdrawal of troops from Iraq
Cut in Interest rates (albeit banks slow to pass them on)
Working families tax credits.

Who was one of the morons that got us involved in the first place-lying to parliament and altering the wording of intelligence reports to persuade them to back it? had he had any integrity he would have resigned once it became clear what was going on-if you recall robin Cook did resign. He was either complicit or lacks the integrity to resign.
Cut in Interest rates (albeit banks slow to pass them on)
Who is partly responsible for the need to cut them in the first place and who could have made sure the banks passed them on but didn't. We own them it's not as if they are in a position to negotiate. He's just handed billions to a bunch of numpties with no control or say in what they do with it. Pass it on please Mr Banker is just not good enough-and by the way we will turn a blind eye to your gross incompetence cos it looks like the FSA were incompetent as well and my mate is now the former deputy chairman of the FSA-had him lined up to be the next chairman. No need to worry though you can't sue the FSA for being plonkers or hold the government responsible in any way. Let's not mention equitable life-maybe all the pensioners will die before we have to compensate them.
How would you like to be an oap who having scrimped and saved to have a good retirement now finds the income from the savings is almost worthless. bad enough for the last ten years he has been raiding pension funds it's too bad if you now have to buy an annuity.
There are more savers than borrowers in this country why should they be made to lose out because of the the banks behaving irresponsibly. He set up the FSA he can hardly deny all culpability for their failing.
Working families tax credits.
Overly expensive and complex to administer-many of those who could claim do not do so. gordie boy is overly fond of means tested benefits that are also costly to administer
pension credit-for every £500 of savings over £6,000 they assume £1 of income and reduce pension tax credit accordingly-work it out oscar that's 10% return-where can you get 10% return on savings.
His benefit system penalises the thrifty and discourages anyone for saving for retirement as does his highway robbery of the pension funds.
You're flogging a dead horse here oscar. you just can't find anything can you:D

Gordon brown mansion house speech 2002
Gordon Brown's Mansion House speech | Politics | guardian.co.uk
What you, as the City of London, have achieved for financial services we, as a government, now aspire to achieve for the whole economy.
And so, Mr Lord Mayor, as we make decisions in the forthcoming spending review with a view to Britain achieving higher productivity growth across public and private sectors, I believe there are important lessons to learn from your success and adaptability.
As you well know, economic stability is the foundation of all we do.
Strengthening the competitive environment means attaining the highest standards in the provision of financial services and it is because of the issues raised on auditing, accounting and the regulation of financial services that in February we announced a thorough review of the UK's current regulatory arrangements for financial reporting and auditing which will make its initial report next month, and why - more generally - we have created a new standing committee on financial stability and the financial services authority - and I applaud Sir Howard Davies on the work he has done.
Having seen his mate put HBOS in the toilet he then makes him deputy head of the FSA. How stupid do you have to be not to see what was wrong with putting someone so grossly incompetent in charge of the regulator? You couldn't make this stuff up could you?
He's a moron-worse a smug, arrogant moron overly impressed by his own perspicacity and the wide boys in the city. Always remember the biggest crooks always wear suits. He shares a large part of the responsibility for what is happening. It may be a global crisis that started in America with the deregulation of the financial institutions but British and European banks are regulated here not in America.
There are no words adequate to describe how we have been let down by these idiots.

HBOS sacked and gagged a senior executive who four years ago warned the board of the bank that they were taking excessive risks, according to evidence given in Parliament this morning.
MPs on the Treasury Select Committee were given details of a submission from the former head of risk at HBOS who claimed that he warned the board repeatedly that they were taking risks with financial stability and consumer protection.
Paul Moore, a former partner of KMPG and head of group regulatory risk at HBOS between 2002 and 2005, accused the bank of "a total failure of all key aspects of corporate governance" and said that he was repeatedly rebuffed and thwarted when he tried to register concern.
In a highly sensitive development he also pointed the finger of blame firmly at Sir James Crosby, the former chief executive of HBOS, who is deputy chairman of the chief City regulator the Financial Services Authority and a senior adviser to the Government.
By dismissing him without good reason HBOS had broken in-house rules and then replaced him with a "personal" appointment of a woman sales manager with less experience of risk management and against the wishes of other directors.
In his submission to the committee Mr Moore said that he warned HBOS it was growing too fast, warned that it was culturally indisposed to being challenged and warned that its sales culture was "significantly out of balance with their systems and controls".
He also said that he told the board the bank needed to slow down but that he was over-ruled by the then finance director when he tried to get his views put in writing in the board minutes.
NOT EXACTLY GORDEY BOYS PROBLEM IS IT?

Who set up the regulator responsible for making sure the banks were behaving sensibly? Which regulator had an approach to regulation based on ticking boxes about the process without any kind of understanding about the basics of running a bank or carrying excessive risk?
When mortgages came under their remit in 2004 there were two key principles they looked for. treating customers fairly and responsible lending. In what way did they succeed? Who is the ******** that decided 125% loan to value was a good idea? Who is the moron that thinks shared equity and govt help for first time buyers to buy property at overinflated prices in the south east was a good idea?
Which ******** appointed someone who was not a banker and had ruined HBOS as deputy head of the FSA AFTER it was clear how badly he had cocked things up and ridden roughshod over the concerns of his own head of risk because he was not a yes man?

Which ******** appointed someone who was not a banker and had ruined HBOS as deputy head of the FSA AFTER it was clear how badly he had cocked things up and ridden roughshod over the concerns of his own head of risk because he was not a yes man?

Except they shouldn't be any getting paid at all-the businesses are bankrupt and without govt handouts they would all be unemployed never mind worried about their bonuses-nor should it take a public outcry for him to work out he should maybe do something. What kind of ******** brokers a takeover deal for HBOS and takes a stake in the resulting combo and DOESN'T THINK TO ASK HOW MUCH HAVE THEY REaLLY LOST. You couldn't make this stuff up it's so unbelievable.
