I apologize for the whinging work related threads.

We found out our fate today at work, it came down to a 20% pay cut across the board.

Plus point... I still have a job

Plus point... we have gone to a 4 day work week

Plus point... I fall into a lower tax bracket

Plus point... perhaps one full day a week, and a few weekends and evenings will offer up time for a second suppliment job

Plus point... we are assued this is for 3 months for now.

Minus point... if the economy continues to plummet there will be lay offs

Minus point... a 20% wage cut puts me into a huge financial bind

Minus point... we won't make back that 20% as quickly as we lost it.

Minus point... i was the only one in the meeting who cried. :-5

All in all it is generous of the company given the times so we can only pray we all make it through.

More plus point than minus in there so that's a plus.

Given the way the company's acted they deserve to survive. Given that you're you, you deserve to survive.

May it be so.

In the past, during another 'downturn' I also had to take a 20% pay cut with the resulting day off.

I got rather use to the 4 day work week and can offer you some other plus points to this.

1) Money saved on gas/parking

2) Money saved by having time to shop more economically and during the

week instead of on a crowded weekend

3) Money saved by having the time to cook from scratch

4) Money not lost by using this day to take care of doctor/dental visits

5) Time gained to see family/friends (your home for coffee)

6) More time for the kids/grandchildren

7) An opportunity for some "ME Time"

Keep positive. Hopefully your four day work week will not last too long.

Oh, that is hard news, minks. I hope you all make it through this period of time, but I know you can get through it. Pick up a little secondary job for now, and know it is only for a short while to do this.

Thanks all, we shall prevail.

Here is a kicker for you all, our city aldermen just finished accepting a 5.5% pay increase. Yep done this week.

I think it's promising that your company has looked for solutions rather than immediate job cuts and that's a positive.

You have the right attitude to hang on in there and when things turn around, your company will remember your loyalty :):)

You have more pluses than minuses.

Im sorry you have to take a pay cut and I hate to say but...but you still have an income.

Give some things up that wont hurt. If you have a cell and land line phone many are eliminating the land line as redundant.

Get rid of cable tv for awhile. In a week you wont miss it. Its all crap anyway.

Cook food that lasts a few days like a big pot of chile or split pea soup, casseroles that type of thing.

Use energy efficient light bulbs. A 60 watt bulb actually only uses like 14 watts or something close to it.

Stop taking showers and washing your clothes. Use ajax instead of expensive toothpaste. Use household items for makeup like ketchup for lipstick and rouge and a magic marker for eye liner.

Slip and fall then sue someone.

All kidding aside if you make adjustments Ill bet you can set off that 20%.

And youre not alone.

In Dublin it was announced this morning of another large employer closing letting go 1,000 employees within a month.

The whole thing is just so unbelievable, and nowhere do I see anyone being held accountable for all the mismanagement of banks and corporations.

Good luck

thanks all, yes I agree I have more plusses the tough thing for me is a 20% cut takes my income dangerously close to the poverty line. I am about the 4th lowest paid person here. Remember I am the soul provider for myself and daughter, I live a frugal life as it is, I already cut corners. Have been for 6 years.

Not making this a pity party mind you. I have survived this far.
