Fast growing trees

Post by kclan5 »

Hi all, I'm new in St. Augustine, Florida, and want to plant some fast growing trees that won't become a monster or create a huge mess in the yard as some flowering ones can. One I've been looking at is the tulip poplar; does anyone have any experience with it? What about other options? Thanks: yh_questn

HI!! Welcome to FG. I know next to nothing about gardening, but there's plenty of other stuff here to check out, so stick around and have some fun! :yh_peace

Eucalyptus would be a good tree to try, grows fast ,nice to look at ,easy to prune and if you get a cold the scent off the leaves are great for clearing the airways.

Koala bears love it not that this helps you but I just thought I would drop it in.;)

I don't know types of poplar, but the poplars I have experience with can send up shoots 6 feet or more in no time, and can be monsters. 30 feet or taller.

Thanks for the advice; I'll do some research. And I agree, the smell is wonderful, although I'm only used to it in flower arrangements. :o

The tulip poplar has large flowers on it, but I read in one description that it will take 15-20 years before they start to produce. If that's true, I won't worry about the mess, but it's hard to find such info on the web. They tell us all the assets, but often not the liabilities. :-2

Yeh, like shallow root systems that pop up all over & ruin the look of the lawn (not the polar, just in general).

Jacarandas are pretty. A paloinia gets huge there. Ask the nursery guy about it. Avocados don't flower, but the foliage is incredible. Don't get a Brazilian Pepper though, their roots are invasive.

Hi...I'm new here too. TIME CONSUMING...you're not kidding ! But I have spent the best time lately chatting to the lovely guys and gals on this site. You'll enjoy the time spent here. Loads of fun and stuff to learn as well. Because of the time difference (UK US) I have been up quite late at night.

Anyway....ENJOY....Warm wishes
