four arrested as campaigners get airside the AA grumpy column

helo its grumpy time again.

the layabout student eco warriors are in the news after barracading themselves in at stansted.

Four people were arrested today after at least 50 climate change activists broke in to a secure area of Stansted Airport, police said.

The protest began at 3.15am when more than 50 campaigners occupied a runway that had been closed for maintenance work, according to Plane Stupid, which organised the demonstration.

An Essex police spokeswoman said: "About 50 protesters have gained access to Stansted Airport and they are airside.

"We have arrested four people so far. Police have contained the area where the protesters are and they will be dealing with them in due course."

A spokeswoman for Plane Stupid said the activists were chained together on the runway and had created "a fort" by surrounding themselves with security fencing.

She said they planned to keep up the blockade for as long as possible to prevent the runway reopening as scheduled at 5am.

In a statement, Plane Stupid said the disruption to flights will prevent "the release of thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere".

One of the activists, Lily Kember, 21, said they had used bolt cutters to get in to a secure area around 50 metres from the runway.

"It's a bit cold, but everyone is in good spirits," she said.

The protest is over the Government's decision to allow the expansion of Stansted Airport with a second runway.

Plane Stupid said aviation was the fastest growing source of emissions and already contributed to at least 13% of the UK's carbon budget.

It also pointed to plans for a new runway at Heathrow.

Last month, another organisation, Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE), launched a High Court appeal against the decision.

SSE said the Government was disregarding the climate change and noise impacts of the expansion at the Essex airport.

Ms Kember said a total of 54 protesters were sitting down on a site near where aeroplanes taxi before taking off and landing.

"Being arrested is a terrifying prospect, but not nearly as terrifying as the threat of climate change," she said.

BAA, operator of Stansted Airport, said the runway was closed for "safety and security reasons" and warned passengers to expect delays.

In a statement, BAA said: "At approximately 3am an unknown number of individuals breached security, but shortly afterwards were held by police. This continues to be the situation.

"Due to this event the runway is closed and will continue to be so until further notice. the advice to passengers is to contact their airlines directly who can advise them but we are expecting delays."

The Society of British Aerospace Companies criticised the action.

Spokesman Matthew Knowles said: "These protestors are ignoring the reality around aviation and climate change.

"Flight numbers have increased at Stansted but noise nuisance around the airport has actually decreased and aircraft are 70% more fuel efficient than they were 50 years ago.

"The industry has also set itself targets for a further 50% cut in noise and CO2 emissions from 2000 levels in new aircraft by 2050.

"It is time these ill-informed protests stopped."

AAG

so the great unwashed think they can stop the planes by blocking the runway eh?

no doubt the police will ask the protesters to come peacefully in a attempt to defuse the situation.

what they should do is send in the riot police tear gas and all and drag these scruffy layabout student individuals off to the nick any trouble met with batons and riot shields.

once in custody charge the lot with endangering air craft and breach of airport security and perhaps a few months in jail will give them something to think about.

if these unwashed scruffs can get to the runway this is a serious breach of security and they should be dealt with severley as this was not intended to be a peacefull protest and could to all intents and purposes be dealt with as an act of terrorism .

Without having read any reports today, didn't i just know that young children would be affected by these selfish Bastards. Yes, young children waiting to fly to a christmas market may not even get there.

No doubt, plod will tread lightly with these idiots rather than upset the anti-pollution campaigners.

I'd like to see the lot of them in prison over christmas banged up with karen Matthews.

Bollocks. people have a right to protest in this country and the days when they read the riot act and sent in the troops are long gone never to return. You live in a free country and you can thank a long list of protesters and political agitators for the privilege.

i have no time for these layabout scruffy eco warriors.

what they have done is commited a crime by breaking in and getting airside

which is in itself is a criminal offence a breach of security and an act of terrorism.

the batons and riot shields i mentioned should only be used if peacefull means do not work and resistance is offered they could stand beside the ordinary police as a

alternative as if to say come peacefully or the riot police and dogs will fetch you out.

you forget by getting air side they are not protesters but criminals.

If they cannot pay, real assets should be seized and auctioned off till they have the cash to repay.

If your going to protest and you feel that strongly about the 'cause' then it should cost you to protest if you do it in such a way as to distrub others.

If you want to peacefully draw attention to a cause then by all means do so on a public roadside but you may not impede the rest of the public while doing so.

Its just rude and obnoxious, and if I walk past a protestor and get 'in yer faced' I am goin off. I am just sick and tired of it.

Listen you right wing tory tosspot if it wasn't for namby pamby liberals prepared to stand up and fight for freedom and liberty you would still be living in a police state with the government free to do as it likes and all you would be able to do is touch your forelock and say thank you sir. If they had gone in mob handed the next week there would have been several times the number of protesters ready to stand up and defend the right to protest. If you want to live in a country where the police are free to go in and beat the **** out of protesters whenever they feel like it maybe you could find a right wing dictatorship somewhere to move to. Just be glad you live in a country where the hard one right to protest still exists.

In reality most eco protesters tend to be middle class and well educated, which point you acknowledge scruffy layabout student individuals thanks to our wonderful labour government it's harder than ever for those with financially challenged parents to get to college or university.

Just to put the record straight. These were not actually 'scruffy lay about' students. If they were, i'd have a little sympathy for a genuine cause.

These 'students' were infact the very people who are going to be the next generation of 'Tory Tosspots' as put by my learned friend gmc so eloquently.

The instigators of this demo are the daughters of even 'A baroness' and a leading 'Tory Tosspot MP.

They are snooty Hooray Henry's who i doubt for a minute actually have a genuine cause unlike the great 'swampy'.

They probably do not even have the words 'carbon Emmissions' in their vocablary.

This was an exercise to do no more than show off.

These are the very people, who once reaching adulthood, will be driving people carriers to ferry one toddler to school and flying out to 'Mustique' to join the rich for their quarterly holidays.

As they are the vile offspring of the wider Royal circle and Tory tosspots, plod will treat them with kid gloves.

This was not a genuine demo. If it were, there are better places to stage this than Stansted Airport. If it were 'Charles De Menezes' that had breached run-way security, he'd have 7 bullets fired into his head by anri-terrorism officers as well we all know it.

These selfish bastards care not for the very people who keep them in their life-style... The British Tax-payer. The mums and dads who have probably saved the crumbs from their hard earned pittance to have a holiday for their children or take their little one's to see family in other countrie's. Or, the case of school children waiting excitedly to go to a Christmas market to see Santa.

The biggest joke of this farce is that their actions have actually created more carbon emmissions with extra flights and diversions being laid on to now clear the thress day back-log.

What a bunch of wankers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
