It's originally an Arabic term. Arabic is very complicated and every country tends to modify it a bit.

I remember while I was working in Morocco back in 1991. Many Moroccans were employed on the site on which I was working. A Moroccan joined one day but he had to be dismissed by the end of the day because none of the other Moroccans understood his dialect.

More rarely over here but himmas and himmis are also correct.

One of the things you have to understand with Arabic is that there are no vowels as such. Vowels are added by the speaker but none are used in the text. Vowels are added in any language books that use 'English' characters to help with pronunciation.

While I was in Morocco, I bought three books on Arabic. I did start to try and learn the language. I've forgotten most of it now. And, for some reason, all three books have disappeared. Hmmm. so much for that then. But I remember a few bits about it. I did get to a point where I could understand the shop signs. But interpreting it as spoken I found difficult.:-5

I was out there for 4 months on an American site installing transmitters for the 'Voice of America' (so I was told).

The site was not far from Tangiers. Close to a village called Asilah.

Now that reminds me, the epiglottal stop is a letter in Arabic. That is the sound made, for instance, where I have foreshortened What to wo'. It is made entirely with the throat. As in bu''er (as opposed to butter).

We took a hydrofoil across from Gibraltar. Luckily we had a fabulous tour guide who showed us the whole town. We visited the Kasbah and all of the shops.

I had a very good guide while I was there. He took good care of me.

I did enjoy my stay there.

In late April and May, the Morrocans start setting up tents on the beach to live in.

We started at a hotel in Asilah but it was very cold in the winter so we were moved to a hotel in Tangiers.
