ACK I have less than a month to get a birthday gift, the kicker is the recipient wants....nothing, and I am darn good and close to giving him just that.
There are loads of things he could use, (dam minimalist attitude he makes due all the time) I see things when we shop and say gosh you could use that or he says oh I could use that, then quickly says naw, I make do with what I got. This guy can keep things for like 25 years without ever ever updating. (don't even go into wardrobe please ahahahahaha) I have done the coupon thing, only to have him use one and tuck the rest away either forgotten, or just not caring, or really isn't interested. An occasion out sounds soooo dam dull and insignificant. I can't afford to send him away (though that sounds ideal some days) I have listened to comments in passing that shoot down many of my other ideas, I am about to give up. Sigh, any suggestions out there.... frustration is killer.

I feel for ya, Minks. It's really hard to find a store that has nothing on sale.
Thank you. Tip your waitresses.
But anyway, he sounds like somebody that appreciates quality and service. Is he handy? What does he seem to spend the most time on, not because it's always broken, but because he seems to enjoy tinkering with it until it's right?

Take him to dinner and a show-you can always pick out your favorite show while at it, so you know you will get your money's worth!

I like Far's idea... or a Swiss Army knife if he's the type.
On a couple different occasions, I have gotten really hard to get for
guys those mini-Maglites and they've always been a hit, even with
a guy who was a millionaire!! (Got him one in gold!!) You can get
them with belt holders, too. And things to put on the end so you can
hold it in your mouth, for hands-free car work and stuff!
Other than that, hobbies perhaps? For my dad's bday one year, I went
to the sporting goods store and bought him all kinds of things like
targets, deer whistles for his truck, deer bags to carry the deer back
with, like that.
Photography? Get him a new star filter lens or something!!
MEN! Can't live with 'em, can't throw 'em out the door doin' 55...

He is a try hard, and generally does pretty well. I would guess his passion would be his bike but.... he is hugely selective so one just can't go on a whim and purchace squat. I think mind you, a gift certificate to his fave bike shop but then on the other hand I am so broke what meger amount I can afford may not buy much for a motorbike. Darn it back to square 1 hehehehehe

It involves chosing first how much you want to spend ,then buying the appropriate red letter day that gives the recipient a choice of several activities ranging from , for example, a days golf , to driving a ferari, to piloting an aircraft and so on.
They start from £50 upwards, maybe there is an equivalant in Canada
Geeeze that sounds nice, all of them but the trouble is I don't have that kind of fun funds at the moment
Pity really cause those all would be so much what he would enjoy .... again back to square 1

There are certain things a woman can buy a man that will remain meaningful (keepers)
If he smokes...an engraved Zippo (dont get the fancy gas lighters they suck)
A watch....doesnt have to be super expensive just styled to his taste.
A subscription to a magazine about something hes interested in.
A nice wooden box that he can keep his personals in.

*sigh*
That was a nice list Nomad.
Happiest birthday presents are loved ones around you.
My favorite birthday present was a violin, I learned how to play it. I had wanted to learn how to play it all my life, and got it when I was 26.
Maybe there is something he has always wanted Minks, and you could fulfill his wish.......................
Otherwise, where we going girl?

Me, I usually come right out and tell my sweetie what I want, and I'm not
the extravagant type. Every once in a while a thing I want might be
a little expensive, but not usually.
Couple years back, I asked for a horseback ride for my bday, it was
absolutely beautiful I'll never forget it... in Jack London State Park. It
was the end of October, warm warm WARM and only 2 other people on the
ride. The guide let us lope in spots since we were all experienced!!
