It's decades, I think, since I was last in the presence of anyone whom, I felt, actively disliked me, and that was a work colleague. On the other hand, I can only think of a dozen people I would call a friend, whom I have become acquainted with since I left school. Perhaps I treat "friend" as a closer relationship than I ought, but I don't think I do. I imagine I use the word "friend" much as most people would, and that at heart I'm simply an asocial person.
I would be mortified if I behaved rudely. I try hard to be useful. If I were to leave the world in a better state than I found it, I would consider my time well spent, and liking people by default is a good start in that direction. I try hard, I usually succeed but discovering a new friend now and then is a rare and unexpected bonus.

I make freinds ... sproartically oooo and susie congrats on the new friends what a nice feeling huh.
I am much to private a person to let many folks into my "friend circle" hehehehe and life's circumstances currently have kind of set me back on looking for new ones. (divorce puts a strain on friendships)
I like to think I give people a fair chance to be friends but find as I get older, I am more critical. Gawd maybe I am turning into my father after all ahahahahaha

I am friends with everyone. I hate for someone not to like me. I have always been that way. Some of them I am closer with because we have more in common. I always give everyone a chance.
I have to agree with Far Rider on this. I can talk to anyone but that doesn't mean they will be my friend. I can count my friends on one hand and most of them I have known for at least 20 years. I have 2 friends from high school - that's 35 years ago if you are interested.

When I was in grade school one teacher would always put me next to the shy person.
For the most part I would be friends with who ever I sat next.
I would make friends easy in a way. But since my best firend always seemed to move away later friendships were often superficial.
However at work I've some how become anti-social.
I started talking to one co-worker and he is like your talking to me? I've been here 6 months and this is the fist time you have talked to me.
In my defence we had 40% turn over in 6 months.

I make friends easily as long as they have an intellectual disposition and are easy going. Proud people turn me off.

If Im lucky enough to meet someone I feel a connection with Im in all the way.
That said being a true friend requires energy from the mind, heart & spirit, it means devotion & time so Im particular I guess.
I do enjoy making contact and listening to people stories you can learn a great deal if you really listen, especially from the elderly.
I try to stay away from the Scots though they will really mess your head up.

Im merely releasing my frustration towards one particular Scot at any other Scot that happens to cross my path. This buttercup Scot keeps darting out in front of me & Ive tried taping my mouth, sitting on my hands & otherwise not looking but to no avail. Theres buttercup being a Scot !
What am I to do ?

Do you make friends easy.. outside the cyber world? What are some of the things you look for? Or are you just friends with everyone?
Unfortunately, I make friends easily... I don't like to socialize too much but people must think I do. People talk me easily, which is nice but I don't want to KNOW too many people. I have very close friends on the internet. 4 girls I met 2 years ago and we are still close, we write, and chat, etc... In general I can be friendly with everyone but not friends. It isn't my thing. I like talking on the internet the same I do with my daily life. Lets just say, I have friends in "both worlds" and I enjoy it!

I make friends fairly easily. I would say I find it more difficult on line as the written conversation can be hard to decipher sometimes and can easily be taken the wrong way, I guess thats where all those smilies come into play!! I rely a lot on body language in face to face meetings which is obviously missing on here!!!
I'm still in contact with several people I went to school with, I have close friends whom I see on a weekly basis, and other friends I see occasionally.
One friendship that didn't last was with another mum at school who was very lonely, trying to introduce her to my circle of freinds backfired as it seemed she wanted my company only and for me to give up my other friends to be her friend exclusively.

I don't make friends easily at all. I'm very shy and get really nervous around others. I think a lot of people confuse my shyness with snobbiness. But this post isn't going to be some sob story. The few friends I do have are great and I would NEVER trade them in for anyone or anything!:o
DANGER!I drive like you do.

I am fairly good at making friends in person but on the internet it is difficult. I don't trust others very readily and posting this way for me feels kinda like, Idon't know, I guess I'm just not accustomed to 'talking' to a screen instead of a pair of eyes.

It is difficult to develop friends over the net because trust is a serious issue. Too many people use the net to live out their fantasy lives... I've learned that the hard way!

I really have a hard time making friends. I don't think it's so much that I'm shy as that I feel awkward in non-professional situations. It's not so much striking up a conversation as it is taking the next step. I'm a loner, and I like other people who are loners, but unfortunately those types of people are just as awkward as myself!

I don't have any close friends anymore. I just don't seem to have time. My group of five close friends from my childhood is down to three, the other two being dead.
of the three....I teach almost continually, one quit drinking after nearly killing his liver, so he doesn't hang out with us anymore. (since we still drink) and the other has a family of five to look after.
We get together occasionally, maybe once or twice a year, but that's it. the rest of the time we are preoccupied with making a living.
I do have my best friend, my wife to talk to, and she has lots of friends. But I just don't seem to want or need the company of other men right now in my life. the exception being Tim, my teacher's aide. He's an absolutely wonderful, personable, and friendly ex-NSA operative (spy) turned teacher. We work together every day at school and really enjoy each other's company, but we never hang out together outside of school, most likely because it's not a good idea to mix work and pleasure.

Hi....this is my first post.
I am 58....I have NO friends but loads of people that I am friendly with at work. One or two that I can confide in.
I have had friends that I worked with in the past but no friends that I can socialise with. I am sad that I don't have friends....it can be pretty lonely doing stuff on your own. My husband and I lead seperate lives so no joy there.! My daughter has introduced me to Buddhism and I am hoping that this will help me to gain the confidence to 'get out there' and change my life around before it's too late. God....this sounds so pathetic.......I'll talk to anyone and smile at people all the time....I get some funny looks back but Hey!!!!!
Maybe I'm just scared to get hurt or 'used'.....I would really like to part from my husband of 40 years but lack the courage.....I also love my house and garden.
I would love someone to put their arms round me and give me a hug.
Bez

Hey Bez!! You missed a hug coming from over here!!! You should have a great time visiting here...it took me about 2 hours to get totally hooked and look at me now! 2,000+ posts!
The smilies need a : in front of them to work, that's why you don't see yours in your post. As for using them elsewhere, I have always just copied and pasted them, even from other sites, and had no trouble at all. I am with yahoo, though, so I'm not sure if they'll work with hotmail.

Hi guys and gals....I'm back for some more hugs....
Well Practising Buddhism is working and somehow I feel 'different'....more accepting and getting on with stuff rather than beating my self up because i think I've wasted my life.....maybe my life hasn't turned out the way I wanted it to 30 odd years ago...but hey...I may have another 20 to go so lets not waste those eh ?
I got a reply to something I posted several weeks ago about Buddhism which is good....I fear that I have put the 'moccas' on some of the discussions as i seem to be the last person in the thread...oh well, I shall have to think up some new topics.....Keep well
Warm wishes and many hugs from me .... Bez :-6

Good people who are always there, who can be relied on in small important ways, people who teach us, bless us, encourage us, support us, uplift us in the dailyness of life.
Often we dont tell them, I dont know why but we dont.
And of course we fill that role ourselves.
There are those who depend on us, watch us, learn from us, take from us and we never know.
Dont sell yourself short.
You may never have proof of your importance
but you are more important than you think.
Life is made of comings and goings and for everything we take with us
as well we leave something behind.
Peace to you my friend.

Well said. Let me take this opportunity to tell you, Nomad, that you've brightened every day that you've posted in this forum. I don't mean a little brighter, I'm neglecting (just a little) other things I should be doing just to drop in to see what you're up to. You make me smile. You make me feel better about the day - even a good day. I'm glad we've met. May we meet in person. Tell anybody I said this & I'll say you blackmailed me.

Friends.
I can "get along" with most people, but that does not mean that they are friends.
Since I have had to move alot in my adult lifetime (ex-hubby was in the military). I have had some great girlfriends during that time, but, either they had to move or we did. (I hope they are all doing well.)
My two best friends, right now, are my husband and my sister.
My sister and I live 600 miles apart, but everytime we get together, we just pick up where we left off. We have known each other for ages (ofcourse) and share alot of history. We e-mail alot.
I feel comfortable enough around my present hubby to just relax and be myself. And he feels the same around me.
True friendship is a special gift.
If I met you, I would smile, but keep my distance for a awhile and let you do the talking. I am more a listener, than a talker. When I feel comfortable, I will let you know a little about myself. Maybe our conversation will show we have some things in common, and we go from there. Friendship takes some time and nurturing. After sharing moments and feelings, we may become friends.

Life is a Highway. Let's share the Commute.
