DON'T FEED HIM LETTUCE!!!!!

LETTUCE CONTAINS OXALIC ACID AND IS EXTREMELY HARMFUL TO BUNNIES!!!

Beatrix Potter books made people think that bunnies like lettuce! NOT TRUE!

They will eat it if you give it to them because bunnies will eat ANYTHING! Literally!

They especially like wallpaper and cables! When we first got our dutch bunnies one went behind the TV and started munching. We were all sitting watching something exciting on TV when suddenly the TV cut out! Right at the crucial moment! Bunny had munched the cable in two!!! I'm surprised they havent electrocuted themselves. I can't tell you how many mice they've killed with one bite! Computer mice that is! :wah: You're waggling your puter mouse around and wondering why it's not working - then you look behind the puter and find 2 pieces of wire - neatly bitten through! :wah:

Wires and cables need to be up high. Use a hosepipe to put your floor wires in to protect them.

Bunnies should NOT leave their mums until they're 10 weeks old but pet shops sell them at 6 and 8 weeks old because they're SOOO cute and people buy them!

You're bunny needs BABY bunny pet food and water. Buy good quality pellets. I buy SUPA RABBIT EXCEL (for older bunnies). Don't buy brightly coloured flakes as they can be high in sugar and bunnies will pick out the bits they like to eat and so won't get a balanced diet. They LOVE the carrots with the looong green stalks on and will inhale the greens which is funny to watch. They love greens too. (Not lettuce!) Don't give him too much as lots of bunnies can get the runs. Also you should try to feed him whatever food they gave him in the petshop as they shouldn't have to cope with a new home, new people and new food. Give him what he's already used to. (PS. Mine like to eat my wallpaper!)

Also, rabbits are NOT great pets for kiddies unfortunately. Rabbits needed to be held carefully with one hand under their rump and one firmly holding their back. If a rabbit feels unsafe he can give a massive kick to jump out of your childs arms and back onto the floor. He can break his back doing this! I know this sounds very negative but I have to tell you that bunnies make the greatest pets! They're bright, funny, intelligent, inquisitive and will make you laugh out loud at their funny antics! It's just that as a bunny lover I could be on here all day telling you stuff and still have loads more to say, so for now I'll just answer your questions, refer you to some great bunny sites with some fab info and chat to you again later.

Next thing. :) Rabbits are very clean but their cages get smelly. Clean them out at least once a week. Put your bunny's food bowl in his cage. Bunnies like to eat and poop at the same time.

Don't put your bunny outside! EVER! Unless you are with him all the time! Foxes can easily undo a hutch latch and eat your bunny for lunch! Turn your back and a neighbourhood cat can pounce and kill. A bunny is a prey animal and his defence mechanism is to 'play dead'. Many animals will leave a dead bunny alone and will not want to eat an animal thats been dead awhile, so 'playing dead' means they leave him alone. It also means you sometimes think he's dead and have a mini heart attack! Watch his nose - it's always woffling!

A house bunny can live for 10-12 years. An outside bunny lives for 4 years!

Even smelling a fox can frighten a bunny so much that he can have a heart attack!

I wouldn't keep the cage in your daughters bedroom. Its not good for her to breathe in the smell! Wherever you put his cage - keep it there! A bunny knows where his poop tray is and if you move it he'll still go in the same spot - but on your floor! Bunnies like to poop in corners, so make sure he has a corner he can reverse into to poop.

Gotta go out now but will leave you with some fab sites and you can always google more! Enjoy your lovely bun!

Oh, PS. Rabbits are prone to getting testicular or uterine cancer. To prevent this you have to have them neutered! Also, it stops them spraying to mark their territory which he'll do from about 4 months old!

Forgot to say - LOTS of fresh hay in their cage every day. 80% of their diet is fresh hay - but they wont eat it if its pooped on so they need fresh hay every day! Chewing it also helps wear their teeth down. Their teeth never stop growing and buns can suffer badly if their teeth grow too long.

Fresh water at least once every day. Preferably twice.

They need to get their shots at the vets. Anti mixamatosis and VHD.

Good advise Rapunzel, I would eat where I had pooped either.

Hey Fuzz bum, make sure he has something to gnaw on so his teeth stay in good nick, and any more advice, call Dr Harry :wah:

Rabbits eating a diet that is too high in carbohydrates (pellets or lucerne hay) are more prone to develop intestinal problems than rabbits eating a high fibre (grass hay) diet. Mucoid enteritis (diarrhoea containing mucous) is a special problem seen in young rabbits that can be fatal. Feeding adequate hay in the diet can prevent this - fresh grass and hay (meadow or grass hay) should be available at all times.

All pet rabbits in Australia should now be vaccinated against rabbit calicivirus (RCD). The disease is almost always fatal and death occurs rapidly, within 12 – 18 hours, from respiratory and heart failure. There is no known treatment. Vaccination should be performed by your vet at 10 - 12 weeks of age. Only one dose is required at this time, then yearly boosters are required for continuing protection.

Rabbits hate being picked up and cuddled. Most children will want to hug the rabbit and may end up being scratched and bitten. Bunnies don't like losing contact with the ground. They can't run away from predators if you are holding them and they will fight to get put back on the ground.

A rabbit's cage needs cleaning out at least every second or third day for hygiene reasons. Rabbits themselves do not stink, rather their uncleaned litter boxes are causing the odour. Rabbits enjoy socialising with people and other rabbits, and if left alone they get bored and start being destructive. Rabbits also love being stroked and patted. Rabbits need feeding at least once a day, if not twice. Rabbits also need their claws trimmed every 6 weeks.

Meg, my daughter who is asthmatic had a huge allergic reaction to our rabbit, so he ended up being outside alot, he was like a dog, followed us around the garden and one day he nipped under conifers and into next door. I quickly rushed round and brought him back. Unfortunately they had green thumb round that day and although the chemicals they had sprayed on their lawn was supposed to be pet friendly, he died later that night from some kind of poisoning. My kids think we left the hutch open and he ran off.

I used to make my rabbits hutch with newspaper, sawdust and then hay.

Smelly little critters they are:D:D:D

Thanks Chezzie, some good points there.

Fuzzy said her boys didn't want the bunny to hurt his teeth. As buns need their teeth to eat, their teeth will grow continuously and so bunny needs stuff to chew on to keep grinding them down. Some buns in captivity are allowed to grow their teeth until they are so long the poor bun is in pain, has a sore mouth and is starving cos he cannot eat! Sorry to sound so grim but I often look things up on speciallist bunny sites when I am unsure of something and it is heartbreaking how many people mistreat bunnies! :-1

Look into hay as some people recommend timothy hay (well, okay, the producers of timothy hay recommend it! Lol!) but the rabbit welfare sites say it is too high in carbs & sugars and is bad for your bunny's health. You can buy hay from a farm, which tends to be cheaper, but the hay is dusty and can cause the bun to have breathing problems. Sawdust can cause breathing probs too. Your best bet is to buy pet shop hay which is bagged up and has been washed. Its also free of little mites which are in farm hay and can cause your bun probs.

Outside buns need mixamatosis and VHD shots but its not a neccessity for indoor buns (according to our vet). However if its a problem in your area its possible to bring it in the house on your shoes so you need to be aware of that. Buns like to chew! and so you can give them various kinds of wood/ twigs eg willow or wooden blocks to gnaw on. I had a lovely seagrass waste paper basket which my buns loved and chewed to death! They also like paper and card and if they get hold of anything will chew it up! My school diary is covered in munch marks as are lots of important pieces of paperwork which didnt get filed away quickly enough! :wah:

As Chezzie says, Rabbits don't like being off the ground. Although mine jump up on the sofa and beds! My OH works nights, if his alarm goes off and he doesn't get up then one of our buns will jump on the bed and nip his toes to make him jump - THEN he gets up! :wah:

But if you pet them on the floor they will adore you! They LOVE having their heads and noses rubbed or gently scratched and if you hear them grinding their teeth its because they're in total ecstasy! *chuckles*

They don't make noises as such but some will also purr if in total ecstasy and a couple of them snore when they're asleep! They also get hiccups which is hilarious to hear!

As Chezzie says you need to clean out their cages every couple of days. I line mine with newspaper, after I put down cage fresh granules to negate the smell, and then hay on top of the newspaper. You can empty the cage and refill it every few days and then clean and disinfect it once a week. I buy huge dustbin sacks for outside bins. I can fit a whole cage in one and tip it up so all the contents fall straight in the dustbin sack and I dont have to empty it by hand.

As Chezzer says, you need to cut their nails regularly. You can ask the vet but its easy to do. My son holds the bunny whilst I quickly do his nails. You need to buy bunny nail clippers as they have curved nails not flat ones like ours. Our nail clippers could damage their nails and cause problems. The clippers are very cheap though.

Rabbits LOVE company! They bond with people and they bond with bunnies. The BEST bond is a boy and a girl bunny. We bought two dutch bunnies (black and white), both boys. They were totally adorable when we bought them and would play together and snuggle together. However, when they got to about 6 months they matured and we suddenly found they were getting into major fights and this is why rabbits are not really for children (beside the holding thing), its because they are VISCIOUS! They are fighting to be alpha male and it can be a life-and-death fight! We had to separate them until we could have them neutered and then they eventually became friends again.

However, we decided to get 2 more buns. We chose 2 beautiful white blanc de hotot bunnies. They have these gorgeous big black eyes (Egyptian eyes!). They are both girls. Again at six months we had to separate them because of fighting but they have never befriended each other again sadly. Apparently it is much harder to bond two girls. We now separate them with a baby gate so they can see and smell each other and 'talk' to each other, but cannot attack each other (other than nip noses occassionally). We're still trying to reunite them.

If your bunny nips you he is trying to tell you he doesn't like what you are doing to him. Its not a bite, just a telling off. He might scratch you to get your attention, he might want to play or have a nose rub. Small children want to play with their cute bunnies. They want to cuddle them and play with them. If the child gets nipped or scratched he'll think the bunny is being mean to him and won't want to play with it any more. So poor bunny gets shoved in a hutch and ignored. Without human contact he becomes lonely and will not play or be cute and sometimes humans get fed up with their 'boring' bunnies and will dump them in the wild. Sadly house bunnies are not accustomed to the wild, they cannot fend for themselves and they will quickly starve or become another animals lunch.

I'm sorry if this sounds negative fuzzy. If you take charge of bunny and show your daughter how to care for him you will get SO much pleasure from him! A happy bunny will jump and leap and whizz around the room. He will beg for noserubs and pets. He will play cutely with toys. Our dutch buns have a 'lick reflex' so if you scratch their backs they will lick whatever is in front of their nose. Put your hand there and they will also lick your hand to bits (its very cute). Our buns will also jump up onto the sofa, then up onto the back of the sofa and lick my kids foreheads! The kids crease up with laughter. They will also lick my sons ears which tickles him and makes him giggle. They dont lick my daughters ears but she has very long hair and we dont think they like it.

We get so much pleasure from our bunnies. They're hilarious to watch and very loving. Whats the name of your bunny? How big do you think he'll get to be?

Forgot to say - most bunny cages are too small! If you keep him caged then his cage needs to be at least 3 hops wide by 2 hops long - whatever size his hops are. However, the more you interact with him, the more fun he'll be. X

Yup. Our blanc de hotot buns adore eating our wallpaper and carpet! Yoikes!

Our dutch buns only(!) ate cables but the naughty blanc de hotot buns eat EVERYTHING and have taught the dutch buns to do the same! They even climb on my sons bed to get at his wallpaper which now only comes halfway down the wall! It needs stripping and painting! They've also stripped the paper from the stairs! And they've munched all the carpet AND underlay in front of my kitchen door!

Their defense mechanism is to look at you with big soulful eyes as if to say "I didn't do it! I'm a good bunny!" And your heart melts and you couldn't possibly blame them! :wah:

It's a giant lop eared cutsie pie. He's eight weeks old and sooooo friendly. But that is apparently what these rabbits are like, they are good kids pets.

Now i've just exposed all my knowledge of pet rabbits.........................could anyone help me out?

the boys think if the feed it lots of lettuce and carrots (shredded of course *shrugs* don't ask me . apparently they don't want to hurt his teeth:rolleyes: ) that he'll be healthier

he has a hutch and drawings are being made up at this moment on what appears to be a tunnel formation that will extend around keesys room :-2:-3

do rabbits smell? How many times do I have to change the straw and paper to keep him good hygiene condition? should I put him outside on the grass? (we have foxes and cats is it possible even though they can't get to him , could they frighten him to death?

questions questions questions!!!!

Oh and I had to make a solemn promise not to turn him into a "Mr Wilson" which is a shame cause he would have made a cute Mr Wilson.:wah::wah::wah: Joking just joking
when my daughter was about 15. she got a rabbit. well we litter box trained him or was it a girl?? :wah:Over 10 years ago:o. He was sweet. They are nice pets.

You wag your finger in front of his face and say "Bad bunny" :-3

Bad bunny then licks your finger to say "I love you" and bad bunny gets lots of petting and nose rubs and poor sucker mummy ends up telling him what a good bunny he really is, what a gorgeous bunny, what a cute and lovely bunny and would bunny like a nice carrot?

Thats how you tell 'em off! :wah:

Oh, a bunny! They make marvelous pets.

Bunnies cn be boxed trained, just like cats. You need to give them fresh hay and pellets daily. Greens-at 8 weeks, they are too young for greens. Around 3 months you introduce a little greens into their diet. Limit how much they get, I serve a bowl a day to my bunnies-big bowl for big bunny, little bowl for the Baby.

If they are running around the house, watch out for cords. Bunnies like to chew things, so bunny proof your house. Or do what I do, limit their area with a portable doggie fence. I see you have a hutch, so it will probably be an outdoor bunny. You clean it out once a week completely. There are lots of links online about bunny care, and a lop is an excellent choice.

Its not the bunny's fault I put nice tasty wallpaper on the walls and have rather delicious tasting carpets, is it? How can he help himself from munching when I deliberately put up wallpaper and laid down carpets? And he IS only a cute little baby bunny after all!

(Actually he's over a year old now and nearly as big as a sheep! I should have realised how big he was going to get when I saw what giant clod-hopping feet he had as a baby!) :wah:

I heard the scream and keesy running into the house. He cried until he fell asleep and again when he woke this morning. I sent him off to school very sad.:(

Hmmm it was kind of my fault. There is a dog in the area and I'm always concerned that he might get run over before his owners come and retrieve him. so silly me encouraged him to stick around (I know the people who own the dog, (it's a fox terrier). and they eventually came and got him from our driveway. I told them that I had him around so as not to have him roaming and the boys were playing with him. We didn't know he'd at some point after that attacked the hutch because it was dark and there was no sound that we could hear. (Probably while we were having dinner)

but not all's bad I had a good talk with him last night and told him he's human and humans have to grieve sometimes ............sometimes we're happy and sometimes we're sad . and he said "but I don't like being sad" .......My heart sank and told him he'll be a bit better in a few days and when we get his next set up he'll be happy again.:o

we've made a deal . We get two rabbits next time and we buy an avery to put them in and he can breed a few lop eared. And he'll be able to sit in with them. But we'll buy them when we get the pup so he'll be able to protect them. It's worked with a kitten and dog we got so I think he was happy with that.:-6

Don't be so hard on yourself.......you didn't know it was going to happen;)

.......great idea telling him you were getting him another one.
Life is just to short for drama.
