Racism and Hate Groups
I was wondering what personal experiences people at FG have had regarding racism and hate groups.
Are you racist? Even on a small level/scale towards a group?
Have you ever been the victim of a racist or hate group?
Have you ever seen first hand the activities of racism or hate groups?
My very first experience is as a child, when my family stressed to me that black people were to be feared and of a lesser race than I. I was completely shocked when I met two teenage black girls at a basketball camp and they were nicer than most of the other girls I met.

I have never been rascist although it's been hinted at me on here, beacause i have oppossed Obabma in other threads. That however, is the sheer ignorance of the one suggessting it.
So the fact that imho, he'd make a lousey President, makes me a rascist??
My husband has worked for a Muslim family for 10 years. They are our best friends and neighbours too. I see kids as young as 10 yrs old hurling abuse at them, because they think it's the right thing to do and cool.
The parents should be held to account. It's instiled in some kids very young. They grow up rascist because of their parents bigotry, not their own free opinion.

I hate it when people play the "race card" (I think is what it's called). Where since you don't agree with one's opinion, it must be for some petty thing like race. I suppose this could go for religion too (He doesn't like me because I'm Catholic") or women ("She only got the job because she's a woman") blah blah blah.

I am not a racist in any size shape or form, but during my lifetime have bore witness to many violent acts of brutality against not only Blacks, but Asians. My first marriage was to a girl from Florida, and though she herself was not racist, her entire family was big time, live it every day racist. It was a major topic of their conversations. This was all pre civil rights times in the mid 50's. Had I ventured to disapprove verbally or aid physically, my own life and limb would have been in jeprody, I kid you not.

The Pakeha's (whiite people) don't really taste good and there aren't any full blooded Maori's left, just mixed breed, and their tough eating and a bit on the lemony side.

I am multi/mixed/race and have experienced racism first hand. I am very open minded myself. Live and let live. There's good and bad in every race/religion/gender etc. But the worst I've had is from white neo nazi groups.

Racism is ugly and pitiful. And yes, it does exist everywhere. It's used as a convenience......to label people.........to dismiss people...so the racist doesn't have to take the time to really know the person or group of people. IMO

I agree. And I've heard many a good argument for it. National pride, purity of race. But having been part of a, 'Cleansing', campaign, or subjected to one, I saw no intellect evident just blind hate.

From what I've read, it seems a lot of people join these hate groups as a way of feeling like they belong to something and to feel accepted within a group. They don't actually develop the "hate" thoughts until after they've been accepted. Then, they want to continue with the feelings of acceptability so develop the groups thoughts and ideas.
I'd have to guess the more insecure people get drawn in first.

There has been alot of good stuff said in this thread already and I probably going to repeat lots of it lol. :wah:
I am thankful for having very open minded parents as the area I grew up in was quite bigoted at one point. They taught us as the late great Martin Luther King said to judge people on the content of their character.
I have seen it all in my time and have actively opposed it where I have seen it be it white on black racism, culture on culture etc.
You do get racism towards whites although it is not as common. I saw this once a few years ago and will tell you the tale as it happened as it may be of interest:
I was walking from my house to McDonalds and was cutting through the car park of a Pub (A Bar) where I saw an Asian/Indian guy arguing with his white girlfriend whilst his white male friend was looking on laughing. He was calling her pink this and Western b***h that, I had already decided to intervene as I approached when he hit her and pushed her to the ground and continued to hit her and be abusive, his mate was still laughing and encouraging him. I shouted and ran over and put myself between them, well I never been a very good fighter :wah: and I got badly beaten, I lost 2 teeth lol as well
Thankfully other people came to our help.
I can never understand why people have hatred towards someone just because they are different.
I became involved with the Anti-Fascist scene for a while here and whilst I have not taken part in demos for years I always keep an eye on what is happening and lend support where I can.
Prejudice and racism is due to lack of education and ignorance on the part of those who hold these views. I try to educate where I can but sometimes you just can't get through to people. For example my wife who I am separated from held some pretty appalling views on Muslims and other groups. This came from her living in an area where the population was 99.5% white and her having no interaction with these other groups and her buying into stuff she sees in the media who do us all no favours here with stories about terrorist this and immigrant scrounger that. I managed to successfully educate her to a degree but it was always a bone of contention between us.
I am lucky to live in Leeds with such a diverse population and I have always worked with large numbers of Black Africans and Muslims. This helped me to understand their cultures and see them as people and not some evil group like many hate groups would like you to beleive. Rather ironically as I was typing this lol 4 of the buildings cleaning staff who are all African left for the day.
I think the most common form of racism at the moment is Islamphobia due to 9/11 and July 7 and July 21. It annoys me cos some of my closest mates are Muslims from either my school days or through past jobs I have had. I have always found them to be very friendly, caring people and it's the small minority in the community much like in every other community who spoil it for the majority. I went to school with one of the July 7 Bombers, this was very close to home as you can imagine but I did not tarr all Muslims with the same brush. The bombers were not evil because they were Muslim they were evil because they were evil, in fact in my opinion having read the Koran amongst other holy books I do not think they deserve to be called Muslims. In case anyone is wondering lol I am not religious I am in fact an athiest lol, I just find studying religion interesting!
Well thats my 2 cents.......

I was born and raised in a big city and was always surrounded by kids and adults from all over the world. So I don't see people as different just because they're from somewhere else. We're all humans. And that Martin Luther King quote about judging people on the content of their character is one of my favorite quotes. :-6
