You know, I love George Bush in a way, rarely has a man been able to produce such an apt epitath for the era in which he was the chief executive as this, already immortal, quote about where his administration has brought the USA. "If money isn't loosened up, this sucker might go down" .
That the President would be the one to spurt out this Tarantinoesque quote about his own nation really says it all, and probably explains why the Bush Presidency has for the most part been an unmitigated disaster for the US.
At least George is rubbish in a non-boring way (unlike Gordon Brown who is both pretty rubbish, and also boring at the same time), but in a really crazy way that makes for great theatre, as long of course that you are not depending on an economic recovery to pay your mortgage or you live in Iraq somewhere.

Health Care: A total mess.
Education: Schools falling apart and shortages of schools and classrooms.
Second rate housing industry with suburban sprawl, shyte transport and infrastructure.
Tribunals making lawyers rich and no one being held accountable for years of backhanders and corruption.
A major ring-road around our capital that had a small bridge tolled, after the whole fecken road was paid for by the EU. Then they can’t even get the toll process right.
They build a major underground tunnel under the city for trucks to go to and from the Dublin city port to get the trucks off of the city street.... OK that is great, only now after it is open they are planning on moving the port north to Balbriggan.
The list can go on and on and just like the States, no real alternative to give us any hope.

Oh I totally agree with you about the diaster that has been Fianna Fail. Brian Cowen has done a terrible job a finance minister and he is not doing great as Taoiseach either. A bit like Gordon Brown he is crap and boring, but Bush is crap and exciting because lets face it our bunch of saps haven't started any mad wars, and also our financial system has yet to go completely belly up like the yanks. But it will, it will, you just watch it slide off a cliff along with our economy, and the prices of our rubbish houses (soon to be occupied by tens of thousands of people on the dole) supposed to be worth hundreds of thousands of Euros.
However, just like in America we were given several opportunities to not vote for these FF boys and the tribunals have exposed how corrupt many of them are. At which point the general population just go, "ah sure they are all gangsters" and then promptly vote for the same person they voted for last time without taking any time to think about alternatives, and their are alternatives always. Therefore in terms of the position we are in now, of course the government and the banks are at fault, and the builders/developers, and the regulatory institutions etc etc, but mostly I blame us, because this is what we voted for and now this is what we have.
At least in the States you have congress and the senate, as well as the supreme court and the administration. You have actual separation of powers there. Here you just have the government and a totally sidelined Dail Eireann, the only independent part of the state is the Judicary. Thats what wrong with Ireland, its run by a small group of people (who mostly live and work in South County Dublin), and in the last 10 years they have all had a vested interest in running up this crazy property boom and no one shouted stop because no one had the power to do so as long as the Cabinet decided it was cool, and they gave their nod to the mates who run the banks and build houses. This is why I voted yes for Lisbon, I would actually rather give more oversight and regulatory powers to the EC and the EP because I just don't trust our own political class anymore, they have their heads too deeply in each others troughs.
