Galbally;1009615 wrote: Actually don't laugh, it kinda saves our arses, we are really out on a limb with this you realize? I am still not sure people realize how much is riding on the next few weeks for Ireland, we could end up finding ourselves in a failed state by 2010 if things went wrong, and I kid you not.
Its actually dizzying how quickly these events have overtaken us, and I don't think we in Europe have really felt the full impact yet at all, but that is coming next. Its real backs to the wall time now, and certainly you can forget about us getting out of this without there being serious economic hardship in Ireland now, and I mean serious. The country is probably in its biggest crisis since WWII (definetly since the Arms trial), the fact that the Germans have gone in for the same thing takes a lot of the heat off us politically in Europe, we have not made ourselves very popular lately.
This German move (particularly if its widely copied) should improve our rep with the rest of the member states as being the instigators of a new policy that has helped Europe, not a bunch of irresponsible "me feiners", and trust me, we are going to need all the friends we can get.
They can't dissolve The United Kingdom. Britain, Scotland and Wales are all in it together.
We can't divide again.

anyone who was running for election. would have voted for what their voters feel. not because JOE BLOW congressmen voted for this. This will be the end for many in office when the election is less then a month away. I am suprised this was not settled until after the election.

:wah::wah: Yep, and they will roll them out in their masses. It's the greedy numbnuts who will grab them to start the next roller-coaster of Spend now, pay later.
They will never learn through greed. When they are in crap next time, it'll be down to the court, get declared bancrupt, no assets, government and taxpayer picks up the bill. etc etc etc etc
Bring back Newgate Gaol for bad debters. :sneaky:

OH yes we can and the more the likes of david cameron come out with that kind of spiel the more support the SNP are going to get. Labour are finished in Scotland the alternative is likely to be the SNP not the tories. Don't patronise and the scots and tell them they shouldn't do something because they're not capable. Cameron is terrified because we have most of the remaining oil-despite the sneaky re-arrangement of the borders at devolution. He knows the tories won't get any seats in scotland that's why he doesn't care if he offends us all. We've just seen an institution older than the bank of england subsumed by an english bank that doesn't even have the common sense to at least keep the name.
There's not really much support for independence but keep it up.

I feel at this point that I need to point out that we here in the 26 southern counties of Ireland are not actually in any way part of the the UK (and haven't been for the best part of a century), but we are a completely seperate country called "The Republic of Ireland", we have our own currency (the Euro) and our own central bank, president, government etc, I am presuming that you know this of course, however some other posters may not realize this.

I do know that, i may just not be able to put it as eloquently as you.
Tell me, what happens if the entire economic sysyem of The Republic of Ireland collapses? And who-ever, declares war on Ireland?
I'm not saying it has, is or will, i am asking what happens?

If our economic system collapses, well we will go back to playing fiddles, drinking whiskey, and eating potatoes. It will more Angela's Ashes, and less "Celtic Tiger". Personally I don't care, because I hate modern life, some of the conviniences are good but really, come on, its mostly rubbish; and people have turned from human beings with a sense of the world and reality, into sated, jaded, corporate-sponsored, TV watching, suburban clones who are just begging for the mother of all wake up calls (which appears to be happening)
But what if someone declares war on us?
Well it depends on who would declare war on us? We do have an Army, (its does a lot of peacekeeping duties for the UN and is currently in Chad, my uncle is a retied Officer). Now if a big country like Britain or France attacked us, well I am not sure there would be much we could do about it (though I can't imagine they would get away with it in the long term, considering we are all EU member states, and we are quite friendly with those crazy yanks across the atlantic as well), but if the Isle of Mann attacked us, we would fix their sorry asses real good.
What I am wondering is what would the UK do if its economic system collapses (unbelieveably not beyond the realms of possibility now), and the Russians try an sneaky one next wednesday (maybe landing somewhere near Scarborough). WW III I suppose.

With snow on their boots - don't forget the snow. I'm sure we'd take them into our houses and give them a proper meal after travelling all that distance.
Traditionally, the people who invade Ireland are the Welsh. Have you not read the Mabinogion? You'll have heard of Olwen, for example? Very beautiful, Olwen was. Kilhwch wanted her hand in marriage and said as much to her father, Yspaddaden Penkawr, and my goodness a harder man you never heard of. "Lift up the forks of my eyebrows which have fallen over my eyeballs, that I may see the fashion of my son-in-law", that was his response. They had a long drawn out argument which got more and more heated:Yspaddaden Penkawr took the third poisoned dart and cast it at them. And Kilhwch caught it and threw it vigorously, and wounded him through the eyeball, so that the dart came out at the back of his head. "A cursed ungentle son-in-law, truly! As long as I remain alive, my eyesight will be the worse. Whenever I go against the wind, my eyes will water; and peradventure my head will burn, and I shall have a giddiness every new moon. Cursed be the fire in which it was forged. Like the bite of a mad dog is the stroke of this poisoned iron." And they went to meat.which always brings to mind, when I read it, the heated discussions I've seen on ForumGarden now and again.

the Uk's economy may well collapse but we'll pop next door for some Potatoe's, and Whisky.
The Ruskie's have already done a sneaky before recently 20 miles out of UK airspace headed towards Hull. Putin's intimidation.

Thats true, well maybe we Irish will come over in force on the ferry from Hollyhead and surprise you Welsh boys, there are some good looking women over there, and then there is all that coal that you haven't gotten out of the ground yet. Heh heh, arrah sure if it goes that way, it will go that way. No hard feelings though.

Go way out of that, sure weren't we always going over and robbing the lads off the hills in wales to mind our sheep on this side of the water. And we had plenty of hard lads over here, sure Chuchulainn would have beat the head off Olywn any day!
Anyway, enough of this violent talk, we must all learn to be nice to one another and cooperate so that we can invade the Isle of Mann. Arahhhha!

It has nothing to do with this thread but i was physically sick saturday.
I see that Gordon Brown has taken back that lying, judas, backstabbing, sleazebag that is Peter Mandelson, for the 3rd time.
And Breathe :yh_ghost

It's an indication of how serious the stock market slide is getting. It's not in freefall but it's within sight of the edge it could fall from. I've never seen the market in freefall. Anyhow, that's as good a reason for getting Mandy into the cabinet as I can think of. He's a designer, he can put systems in place at short notice that will hold across the whole of Europe, he's got the personal authority to be listened to.

Yes, as business Secretary, he is well suited, i do not dispute that, but this is Gordon Brown's most henious enemy.
Gordon Brown has put his future at stake with this well known traitor and enemy.
Mandelson even joked with Fleet Street "3rd Time luky". Yuk Yuk Yuk.
Just Found this headline from Saturday.

Yes, its self evident that Europe needs to come up with some kind of institutional response to this very rapidly unfolding series of events, Mandelson is not the darling of the British media crowd, but he is a highly capably politician and negotiator. Whether some guy in the daily mail doesn't like him is far less important than whether he can help to rescue the British financial system from collapse. The Irish stock market lost 9.5 percent of its value today, and thats on top of the 12 percent it lost last monday. If the markets continue to deteriorate this rapidly trading will have to be suspended. Bugger, what a mess this lot is.

Your following the lead of our congress, that has just slipped off the edge of the world of reality, to think they could even shore up a part of the market is ridiculous.
Come November the dems will control the whole big mess, from congress to the executive branch. The repubs split when the bail out hit, half the repubs went to Barr or Paul, McCain can't win now. Obama is the great black hope of Europe, lets hope he can sit down with Russia, Iran and the bank of england and charm his inexpereinced hiney into some sort of money so he can advanced the largest single socialist movement america has ever seen.
I hope the US government has enough money to get my hiney back from whatever god forsaken country they will send me to next. I think I better bring my own bullets. :-3
Obama-the one world president. God save the king!
Yes, in Europe we are so glad that we have to rely on whatever clown they elect to Washington, based on his appeal to people who watch daytime TV, so all pray to Obama, Obama, Osama (I mean Obama). But obviously, he is the anti-christ, unlike that wonderful man Bush, who has singlehandedly rescued America from having to be rich, respected, and powerful (like too much work man).
I think someone is going to try and shoot Obama now, as the right-wing lads seem to be becoming embittered already and when that happens, the bullets usually start flying. As for us in Europe, oh we will probably institute martial law, and go back to old style not quite so friendly Europe, lots of snazzy uniforms, big armies, navies, supercilious attitudes to everyone else, single party states, opera, representative art, you know how it is. Gee wizz, thank you Wall Street, what a wonderful job you have done of wiping out the Western World. As I keep saying, its time for some exemplarary crucifixtions.

I think that September 11th was a wake up call that we have collectively chosen to ignore, and instead insisted on conducting business as usual and chasing paper tigers in the desert when the real enemy festers and grows stronger all the time. Now the Taliban are stronger than ever, and the world's only Islamic nuclear power Pakistan totters, while Iran makes hay, such is the price of self-indulgence and self-delusion.
You can expect a unilateral US withdrawl in Iraq in the spring as soon as the current budget year is up, as I can't see how that particular piece of strategic folly is going to be financed anymore. I also think that placing the economic well-being of our nations in the hands of men who were being rewarded, based on the size of the incredible and irresponsible risks they took, has been the main reason for this collapse, and the folly was one brought upon ourselves, in our short sightedness and greed.
What foolishness, indeed Osama must be laughing himself to sleep every night at the hubris and folly of his enemies. I am worried about what the geopolitical consequences of this American economic collapse are going to be, and who intends on rushing into the power vacuum that is undoubtedly going to follow. I don't think Barack Obama is your problem Jester, in fact he is about the best choice you have right now, the Republicans have nothing but extremely hollow platitudes about patriotism and country, of course the fact that a Republican administration and their mates on Wall Street has presided over a lot of this demise is being glossed over mighty speedily.

The world's rather forgotten that Osama chap, don't you think? He ran Maktab al-Khidamat to drive the Russians out of Afghanistan alongside Reagan's financial and training assistance to the mujahideen "freedom fighters", then he took public exception to the US stationing troops in the Middle East so he sent a suicide team to fly aircraft into buildings, and finally he got left behind by events. Retired from public life. All he does these days is publish occasional letters to the American People, usually in the lead-up to elections.
Speaking of which, isn't he due to write another sometime soon? I'm sure he's not missed one yet.
Is there any particularly good reason why he's not been arrested? I've always thought the US government needed demonized foreigners for their electorate to hate and that's why he's still out there allegedly on the run. The parallels with Emmanuel Goldstein in Orwell's 1984 are striking.

Barack is the problem and my america has been destroyed, I was just too foolish to see it and too stubborn to realize it. The last president we had worth anything was Eisenhower.
When Im done and released this last time Im going back home for good and Im goin to watch alfalfa grow, and the cows graze and carve wood and tell stories to my kids and grandkids, and God help anyone who steps on my land uninvited.
I'm not sure how you can blame Obama for the problems you have now, when he hasn't actually done anything. Do you not think that perhaps the last few Presidents (particularly George "moron and proud of it" Bush), the arrogant and deluded Wall Street establishment, the neo-liberal anti-human economic madness that has been adopted wholesale since Regan, and the general consumer society based on nothing is the problem, and not some black dude from chicagi?
Good luck on the alfalfa ranch, try not to hurt anyone if you can avoid it.

Any broadcast i have seen with Osama leaves me knowing two things.
One: He has a Rifle
Two: He has a donkey
I might be worried if the next one i see, he has a cruise missle strapped to his back. Even more worried, if the donkey has a cruise missile strapped to his back.
Did this not really all start with George Bush Senior and Desert Sorm?

I can imagine it being broadcast as on the local television station, "The Old Time Righteous Hour". You'll need a beard and a hat. If you do I'll write in to get it syndicated.

Well, of course I welcome your opinion, and its your country not mine. I would say though that you should reserve judgement on Obama unless and until he becomes an actual president. As for GW, I don't think he was a good man at all, though he may have had intentions he believed were good, but as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with those.
I think what has happened is that an insane economic ideology has finally hit the rocks it was always bound to, as it replaced people, decency, loyalty, and identity with profits and markets; and the logic of such rigid ideologies usually ends this way. As for your intention to take to the hills with your squad of dudes, well again, just try and remain calm unless its completely necessary to go nuts.
As for me, if the whole shithouse goes up in flames then I shall remove myself to an island off the west coast of Ireland, grow potatoes, drink whiskey, play the fiddle, make lots of children with a fine lady, and go to mass more. That'll do me boyo. We don't do the big powerful country thing, so as long as we can eat, its not so bad.

700 Billion Dollar Bill Passed. Good or Bad?

Barack is the problem and my america has been destroyed, I was just too foolish to see it and too stubborn to realize it. The last president we had worth anything was Eisenhower.
Should have listened to his warnings then.

from his farewell address.
A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction...
This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence — economic, political, even spiritual — is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. [QUOTE]Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.
He was right wasn't he? What you've seen over the last few decades and especially over the last years of the bush presidency is not the politics of the left or the rise of socialism. your economy had been wrecked by the politics of the right the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.
This bail out is not socialism it's your elite trying to hang on to their party frocks by getting the taxpayer to pay while at the same time somehow convincing you it's not their fault. You've allowed yourself to fall in to a panglossian delusion that everything was for the best and that anyone criticising was somehow unamerican without thinking beyond a knee jerk reaction. Anyone criticising the activities of big business was anti-business, anti capitalist and therefore un-american. Anyone daring to suggest that foreign policy might be ever so hypocritical was anti-american.
If the captain of the ship of state has just driven you on to the rocks only an idiot would insist on a new captain that wants to set the same course.
It's ironic-I know americans aren't supposed to understand irony-you worry about america becoming socialist but the rest of the world have been worried about america becoming a right wing, militaristic, aggressive, authoritarian state. Luckily right wing governments have the same talent fior screwing up the economy with blind economic doctrine as the left do.
You've been showing all the classic signs of a right wing takeover of a democratic government. I don't think americans are daft enough to let it happen.

I like potato's, whisky, fiddles and children:yh_eyebro
