I need your oppinion on the meaning of the Lyrics 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd.

incase you don't know the lyrics here they are:

So, so you think you can tell

Heaven from Hell,

Blue skys from pain.

Can you tell a green field

From a cold steel rail?

A smile from a veil?

Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade

Your heros for ghosts?

Hot ashes for trees?

Hot air for a cool breeze?

Cold comfort for change?

And did you exchange

A walk on part in the war

For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.

We're just two lost souls

Swimming in a fish bowl,

Year after year,

Running over the same old ground.

What have we found?

The same old fears.

Wish you were here.

I watched an interesting documentary on this a while back. The song is about SB's retreat from reality. He became distant and unresponsive, unable to communicate with. One day while they were playing on stage he just walked off.

The song is about the band members feelings of angst, remorse and inability to reach the dark side of his mind. They missed his influence and presence considering he was not only their friend but I believe the founding member of the band.

In my opinion this song and the entire album was the pinnacle of their musical contributions.

that makes sense, i got the feeling that part of the meaning was to do with the mind, a surprising amount of Pink Floyd songs are.

makes for good listening.
